Mrs. Kiwi's Picture
Mrs. Kiwi, Los Angeles Age and Occupation in 06: 27, Bookkeeper Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, P.E. Teach/Coach @ private schools in LA Engagement Date: March 31, 2006 Wedding Date: November 3, 2007 Venue: Radisson Hotel About Me: I'm a bookkeeper who failed high school algebra. I'm currently living in Los Angeles, literally a street over from where I grew up with Mr. Kiwi, my honey of three years. We have a jumbo mini-dachshund (seriously, he's huuuuge), and we're planning an autumn themed wedding on a shoestring, paid for by ourselves. The wedding date is my late grandma's birthday, I needed her there somehow, and that seemed like the best way for us. I can't believe I'm a Bee! I couldn't be more proud!

Suck It In

March 19th, 2007 @ 12:38 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

Okay guys, I need some of your help. I’m looking for a corset to wear under my strapless wedding dress. Dress is here:

Suck It In : wedding los angeles undergarments Z803461 z803461

Now, I’ve seen this one at Fredrick’s of Hollywood, the Ultimate Satin Corset.

Ideally, I’d like the boning to not be very obvious through the dress. I’d also like the corset to be an over the hips style, so it won’t make my tummy fat squeeze oh-so-attractively out of the sides and bottom. The version below by LoveFifi is the ideal shape, but that boning looks so obvious!

Also, I’m a 38D (probably, this is what I mostly fit in, but have yet to be measured by a pro), and I tend to worry about the strapless bra/corset cups. On my wedding day, I’d rather my cups not “runeth over.”

So, any suggestions? I’m open to corsets, strapless body smoothers and anything else you think may be useful.

I ordered the Fredericks one last week. I’ll write you when I get it in and let you know how it works out.

Find a real lingerie store (not Victoria’s Secret) and get measured. Then you can see the garments up close, too. If you live near a Nordstrom, they measure well too. But getting the right fit is crucial, especially if your dress is heavy.

I bought mine from Macys.com. It is by Le Mystere and it has a smooth exterior and goes over the hips but just barely. Check it on their website. I think Nordstrom’s carries the brand as well.

A friend recommend to me the bra company Goddess. http://www.goddessbra.com/default.asp
They make ONLY larger-figure bras, so the cups are great at holding the girls in, and they have a wide range of longline corset/shapers. I’m a 40C and I’m going to try their stuff out.. A local store carries the brand. good luck!

When I ordered my wedding dress, I was fortunate to be related to the owner of a bridal salon. They actually tend to carry undergarments at the store, at least the ones where I’m from (NJ) do.

Granted, all my alterations were done for less than $20, but they sized me for an appropriate bra (remember, it’s not just going around up by your boobs, but all around the tummy too). They also said if the cup felt like the appropriate size was too small, that they often altered the larger size to fit you.

Now, I don’t know if it’s just because they’re a local bridal shop (as opposed to bigger, more city bridal salons), but they made the impression that they did this often, not just special for me.

Just something to consider when exploring your options.

But seriously, I NEVER felt like I was going to fall out. It wasn’t until the end of taking pictures that I ever even thought about adjusting up there. (And I’m a 38DD)

Ditto the Nordstrom recommendation! Westside P & The Grove have great lingerie sections with very helpful staff and with their return policy is ideal for this type of purchase! That way… if it doesn’t work with your dress, you can return or exchange it later on!

Le MystĬre Underwire Bridal Bustier is well-made. Straps are removeable. Any large department store should have it. Definitely get measured.

Seems like the boning wouldn’t show through your dress since there is detailing on the bodice but to be safe, don’t cut the tags off the bra until you have tried the dress on with it.

I first tried Spanx and that wasn’t sufficient for my needs, and I ended up going with the Dream corset at Frederick’s (although with a budget, I’d have picked a custom corset maker). I had my first dress fitting this weekend (my dress is being made, and has a 50s style shape with a fitted waist and full skirt), and the corset was fantastic! I’m also a bit curvy– and was very pleased with the result and it did not seem to show the boning. I’d try the Dream and the satin versions to see which you like better. I also received excellent service and found the experience better than Victoria’s Secret (where I started).

I was just in NYC this past week and I went to Bra Tenders where they one-on-one consult wiht you and fit you. Honestly, I’ve been fit professionally at other places, but they all had it wrong. I was sure I was a 44 D-DD (depending on the maker), but I am in fact a 38 F (I really thought that stood for fake, but I assure you they are not). Apparently most of us gals tend to up the number and not the cup whereas it’s the other way around most of the time.

In any case, I got a corset there that fits like a dream, and I’m pretty sure that the boning won’t show through on my dress (which has no embelishments) so I think yours will be fine too. Don’t forget that the cups on a corset are not meant to fit like a bra, they are meant to lift and hold in place like a shelf. This means that you really need to make sure you’re in the right cup letter b/c if you’re not, they will indeed spilleth over. And a well fit corset is much much sexier than one that is too small but trying make the person squished into it.

Go to a real lingerie store and get fitted. Try on several different combos of cups and numbers to see what works best for you and your comfort level. Seriously, it makes me look thinner because you can now see more of my waist, my boobs aren’t hanging in the way of it - they’re up where they should be and my clothes all fit better to boot! Woo hoo!

I drove all the way out to Monrovia just to get a decent fitting corset (and it’s smooth with no obvious boning and what not). It’s a specialty bra shop called Wizard of Bras (haha) and they can fit pretty much anyone with a great corset at a reasonable price.

I took a class and made my own so it fits perfect! I only tell you this because the teacher of the class makes them for people in her victorian tea guild so you might be able to find someone to make one that way. She drafted her own pattern for each of us to make if perfect.

A major suggestion for comfort - the real metal spiral boning is way, way more comfortable that the plastic stuff. The plastic tends to buckle if you sit or bend wrong and you can’t bend it back.

Good luck!

As everyone has said before, it does really help to be measured by someone who knows what they’re doing. That said, I know what size I am (38DD) and I just ordered this to go underneath my very similar Casablanca gown:

http://www.casablancabridal.com/Products/Detail.asp?ModelNo=1843&Cat=Fall+Collection&SubCat=2006

I’m not positive if it’s going to fit, or if it’s going to work, but I’m willing to try. I’d like to have something pretty under my gown, and since the bodice of my gown has a great deal of embroidery and beading, it’s not as if I have to wear something to make a smooth line.

http://www.figleaves.com/us/product.asp?product_id=PE-3417

Good luck!

Gotta agree with Miss Pearl. The WIZARD OF BRAS is the place to go to find any bra/corset/strap thing-y you desire! I got my strapless corset, ruffled panties, and stockings for under $60.

Another idea would be to go without the corset and just do a really good strapless bra. With the detailing on the bodice, the boning may not be a problem, but for my dress, it was. I agree that Nordstrom has an excellent reputation for knowledgeable customer service. I highly recommend them!

For we bigger-busted ladies, a corset that does *not* contain cups usually makes for a better fit. Just wear a bra with it. (If your dress needs a strapless bra, though, this won’t work.) Also, if your dress has a fuller skirt, consider a short corset; it will be more comfortable. You might also find that wearing a “tummy controller” type thing over your corset will get rid of unwanted bumps at the hips.

If you can afford it, get a corset that has metal boning, not feather boning. It will work so much better, and believe it or not, it will be more comfortable! (Feathing boning is so lightweight that sometimes it curls; this can make the corset REALLY uncomfortable. Metal, on the other hand, is quite flexible, but stays where it should.)

I guess it depends on what your dress looks like, but I wouldn’t worry about the boning showing through. Many dresses won’t “show through,” and even if your dress does show the corset a bit, it will probably look like built-in boning.

I recently blogged about bridal corsets here: http://christianweddingtips.blogspot.com/search?q=corsets The post includes a link to a great article on how to wear a corset comfortably.

Good luck!
Kristina

I’m a 32E and had to go to a professional bra fitter to find a longline bra for under my strapless dress. It was wonderful, she spent 30 minutes with me and made sure what I bought fit perfectly. You probably won’t need an official corset, which might be expensive, but a good-fitting longline bra will do.

HANDS DOWN, go to Miss Stevens in Beverly Hills on Olympic.

It’s the best place to be fitted for what you need. They are PROS. The little old biddies that work there will find you exactly what you need and every time I’ve gone in, they size me up on the first or second garment they offer me.

They carry everything and it’s all good quality.

As a side note, Trashy Lingerie on La Cienega is also good, as they will custom make stuff for you and you pay a small $3 membership so ner-do-wells can’t just come in and ‘browse’.

try gilligan o’malleys at target.com. it’s free shipping for clothing purchases over $50 and google around to get a target coupon (i found a 10% off coupon). if it doesn’t fit, you can return it for free at the store. gilligan has some great underwear.

Corsets fit very differently depending on whether you are long-waisted or short-waisted.
