Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. michelle diy’ed her unity candle with self-adhesive stickers but they fall off pretty easily. Do you know of a setting spray to make sure they don’t fall off?
  2. Mrs.Penguin is looking for wedding gift ideas for her best friend. It will most likely be a group gift from the wedding party. What’s the best wedding gift you’ve received or given?
  3. MSS is trying to get a feel for what kind of e-ring she’d like. She likes princess cut and white gold.. is that enough info? Do you have suggestions for non-jewelry store resources to browse for setting ideas? Thoughts on picking out your own ring?
  4. sp wantst to give the mothers nice lace handkerchiefs. Anyone know where to purchase them either online or in NY?
  5. Miss Poppy wants to know what you’re wearing to a bridal shower at someone’s home. One person says dress, another says jeans and she’s confused.

Miss Poppy–I’d never wear jeans to a bridal shower! Well, not unless it was apparent that the shower was going to be VERY casual. I usually wear a casual dress (a cotton wrap dress or something similar), or perhaps a cute skirt and nice top. When in doubt always dress up–it’s better to be overdressed than underdressed!

miss poppy: here’s the thing — there will be tons of pictures, so wear something nice. i hope the weather will be nice enough so that i can wear a dress.

3. MSS, check out pricescope.com. the “show me the ring” thread in the forums is a great place, there are links to quite a few reputable online and b&m stores on their vendor list as well. beware, though, it can be addictive.

5. Miss Poppy, my personal philosophy is that it’s always better to be overdressed than underdress (ok, it’s not *always* true, but usually works).

mrs. penguin, i’m planning on giving my best friend a digital picture frame. she didn’t register for one [because she says it's too expensive] but she’s mentioned how wanting one. i know she won’t spend the money on herself so i figured this would be the perfect personal gift to give. she’ll probably scold me for spending the money but whatever. lol.

Mrs. Penguin- If it is a group gift any of the bigger ticket items (Kitchen Aid, furniture, pots & pans, knives) would be great. I don’t think I will get those items, but maybe someone will surprise me.

Miss Poppy- I am wearing a dress. Even though it’s at someone’s house it’s still a special occasion and I want to look nice.

I have a question to the uber-helpful weddingbee readers! I am a wee 1/2″ shorter than my fiance….flat shoes are a must for my wedding. I’ve tried the bridal shoe designers but nothing caught my eye and I am stumped. Any suggestions for great, flat, formal shoes? I’m not afraid of a little embellishment on the shoes, either :)

I have a question on tipping. How much do you tip the photographer? Also, I’ll be getting my hair and make up done three times for engagement photo, formal photo, wedding shot etc. How much do you tip the make up artist and hairdresser? They quoted me $400 for three sessions.

I decided not to include my ceremony in my invitations because of the lack of seats and space I have. What is the best way of including the ceremony invitations to my close friends and family? Should I include a separate insert? Can someone suggest how I should word it? Thanks!

sp- I just ordered hankies for the moms from Monograms Inc.. Can’t vouch for the quality yet because I haven’t received them, but I went with them because wanted something that had plain edges and didn’t look like a doiley.

njbride07: try Target! I ordered 3 potential pairs of wedding shoe contenders there last week, and they have flats. Also, last I checked they were having free shipping on shoes purchased online (which is where most of their more bridal/special-occasion shoes are featured).

Question for the hive: in the same vein as the flower girl post earlier, what are some creative things for little boys to carry? We’re having a ringbearer (but I don’t necessarily want him to carry rings or even fakes) and a flowergirl. Both are very young, and she is carrying a bridal build-a-bear that someone gave me when I got engaged.

bride07–why don’t you have him carry a groom build-a-bear too? It’ll be a cute takeoff on the old “ring bear” joke! (even if build-a-bear doesn’t have a specific “groom” one you could surely find a tux outfit for one!)

Here’s a new beehive question: what’s the absolute easiest way to make a petal cone? I’d like only to bend, stick with double-sided tape and punch holes to thread ribbon through. If there’s a specific size that’s best, I’d be willing to pay to have Paperandmore cut it to the right size. I don’t want to bother running through a printer.

Question for the group:

I love the idea of an edible favor - either a gourmet cookie or a pair of mini cupcakes… I’m concerned about freshness/time it takes to individually wrap them (I’d prob do it the day before the wedding) — and also some people have expressed that they love to have a real “takeaway” from the wedding, rather than something that will disappear into their belly on the ride home. Thoughts? Can anyone recommend a bakery in NYC or northern NJ?

Michelle, I don’t know what you have used to decorate your candle, but here are some ideas:

If you’d used ribbon, pull it tight and hot glue from the back.

Jewels (or other small items) - try hot gluing them to straight pins and sticking the pins into your candle. This doesn’t allow you to remove and move the item, but it is good when you know right where you want them.

I printed our monogram on a piece of opaque white vellum and put that on our white center candle. I was able to conceal that it was paper by putting a ribbon on the top and on the bottom.

HTH!

lisabaobei - try Amai Tea & Bake House http://www.amainyc.com. They sell little tea sweets made with tea and spices as well as a variety of brownies (including champagne!). Amai can work with you on the packaging, or you can order by the pound and do the packaging yourself. You can contact them through the website regarding pricing for wedding favors.

lisabaobei you can make decorated sugar cookies. They can be ‘held’ at every step of the process and made well in advance. If you are interested ping me on my blog and I will post details and the recipe. I used to do them all the time for favors. They can be time consuming and depending on how you decorate them even a little tedious. they are however a very cool diy that your guests will love.

RE flat shoes — They are all the rage right now and are suddenly everywhere. Would be easy to find something “creative” (metallic, quilted, textured, accent colors, embellishments) but if you want a “bridal” style, look for the 9 West satin ballerina flat. I keep seeing them at TJMaxx, Marshalls, Filene’s, etc. Super cheap, too.
