Flower Girl w/o Petals?

March 20th, 2007 @ 3:08 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

Rose petals, rice and confetti are not allowed in the ceremony- nor are they allowed out of the church, either. Now I’ve got to call our florist and see what else we can do.

A few ideas for our flower girl:

This pomander has hypericum berries, roses, and freesia. All things that we’re going to have in our bouquets, only different colors. This would be something fun for our flower girl to take home, I think.

This one is almost a modified basket, with flowers.

And this one has the type of colors I’d like, maybe a little less orange.

What do you think of pomanders? Can you think of something else the flower girl can carry, but not be tempted to toss?

The first one is my favorite, soooo pretty! Although, if I were that flower girl I would totally want to swing the pomander alllllll around. Hehe. So maybe watch out for that! But I think a pomander is a great idea!!

I like the pomanders! Another idea would be a floral purse (even silk flowers glued on the outside would be okay…and non-perishable) or a floral wreath for her head.

I love the pomanders too - I’m thinking of using one for my niece who will be so young that she’ll be holding her mom’s hand (my sister and matron of honor), meaning she’ll only have one hand free, so no tossing. Another idea might be to give her a wand and put wings on her (if you’re not adverse to fairies at your wedding). Or she could have flowers in her hair instead and carry your train a-la Princess Di if she’s old enough (although I’m going to go out on a limb and say you’re probably not having a train that reaches the whole distance of the cathedral and weighs 80 pounds). If nothing’s allowed to be tossed outside and it’ll be nightime you could do sparklers, or bubbles during the daytime.

she could carry a bell and say, “the bride is coming!” as she rings it down the aisle. so cute! :)

My sister had pomanders at her wedding and they were so pretty. My only suggestion is to use silk flowers since live flowers (in oasis with water) get too heavy for the little arms to hold. And the ribbon pulled out of one due to the weight.

I like pomanders, too. Be careful about fresh flower pomanders, though, because they can be a little heavy. From what I’ve seen at friends’ weddings, if your flower girl is young she may not want to carry it. Pomanders with dried flowers work well because they’re much lighter.

I can’t have petals either, so some ideas I’ve been thinking of were wands, scepters, modified baskets, purses, and mini bouquets. I’m leaning towards the mini bouquets, though, because I know I would have LOVED one when I was a flower girl way back when.

our church won’t allow us to throw petals but they allow us to use fake flowers. (They don’t stain and are easy for clean up) I don’t know if you can have that option? If they’re going to be on the ground, who cares if they’re fake? =)

How about a flower girl wand? We’re doing something similar to this:

Our church isn’t letting us throw flowers either, but they are letting us hand them out. My flower girl is going to have a basket of long-stemmed flowers and hand them out to guests at the end of the aisle. She’s going to skip every couple of rows so that it wont take too long! It’s a different take on petal tossing.

i love SL’s idea. my suggestion would be to do a mini bouquet or nosegay. a lot of times the kids want what the adults have, and then you don’t have issues with pomander weight/swinging/etc., either.

I’m not allowed to have anything tossed where ours is located either, so we’re having the flower girls hand out Hershey’s Kisses and Hugs. Let’s see if they make it without eating them all first!

My cousin was a very young flower girl and so they gave her a flower wreath in her hair and then she got a small white satin stuffed rabbit to hold as she walked down the aisle. It was perfect because she LOVED it, it kept her happy through the long Catholic service and it looked adorable!

very very cute. watch for using berries of any sort, so that your flower girl doesn’t eat them and get sick!

Thanks for all the great ideas!! I couldn’t find ANYTHING that wasn’t a basket. Toys and wands are definitely good ideas, the candy- I know she’d eat it! (Heck, so would I!) I’ll take all these ideas to the florist!

A bride from xanga I think is doing a bride & groom build-a-bear- both her flower girl and ring bearer will be carrying them down the aisle. I thought that was a very cute and creative idea. I believe she let them pick them out as well.

Pomanders are very cute, but keep in mind that they can be really heavy, especially having been just watered. A friend’s flower girl recently almost keeled over while walking down the aisle because the damn pomander was heavier than she was.

I’ve also seen baskets that were full of dried flowers that you couldn’t pull out to throw even if you tried. Are you not having anything tossed afterwords or are you waiting until after the reception for that?

looks pretty. Maybe you can have your flower girl hand out a stem of flower to the guests sitting in the aisles.

Depends on the age of the flower girl, I think. If it is a younger girl, I would go with a flower wreath for her head; an older girl could carry a pomander or a mini version of your bouquet.

they get really heavy and sometimes fall apart. it depends on how active your fg is and old.

The wand is a cool idea I’d never seen before.
Also cute — a nosegay of tightly packed flowers shaped like a heart.

Wrist corsages are also good — strapped on — as are corsages attached to the center of their waists in the back at the bow — cute rear-view.

Our FG was only just-turned-3 and was so well behaved and did not pull anything apart. We delegated FG flowers and she ended up with a silk wreath (WISH IT HAD BEEN REAL FOR WAY PRETTIER PHOTOS) and a Wilton FG basket with a mini arrangement just like the bridesmaids’ bouquets. The Wilton basket is cheap and was bought with a coupon at Michael’s. Post-wedding she’ll keep hair accessories in it.

I used Flyboy Naturals Freeze Dried Petals for my son’s wedding. The church would allow them because they do not stain and they smelled awesome when we threw them down on the aisle. Used them for the Flower Girl and wedding toss. We scooped some up and bagged them for their one year anniversary. They used them on their table when they ate their wedding cake topper.

Help!! 3 years ago I made fresh flower pomanders for my niece’s wedding. Now my future d-i-l wants them for her wedding, but I can’t remeber how I made them and can’t find the directions on the web anywhere. I think I stuck a plastic straw down through the middle…but that’s all I recall–I don’t want to use chicken wire. Can anyone assist me w/this? Thanks.
