My Kid Friendly Table Centerpiece

March 20th, 2007 @ 11:42 am by Mrs. Apple

Garden Ridge always has great deals on decorative items so I decided to stop by this past weekend to take a look. They had piles and piles of Easter items on sale. I found these cute Easter baskets on sale for half off - $1.50 each basket. They had so many different colors, sizes, and designs. Unforunately, I couldn’t find one that had a creme/sage/chocolate color, but I found ones that were just as cute! The colors/fabric on the baskets are playful and age appropriate for the little munchkins.

We have a total of 40 kids under the age of 13 attending our wedding. I know they will be a main part of the wedding - running around the tables, playing along with the photographer, and pointing and laughing at us kissing. So, their tables had to be decked out as much as the adults. But of course within a kid budget.

Here is the breakdown of the items.

Garden Ridge - baskets, moss = approx total $2.12 each basket
Walmart - crayon sets, crayon books = approx total $4.00 each basket
Misc Toys and Bubble Gum = approx total $ 1.00 each
total = $7.00 - $8.00 per basket

Though the mini bubble gum machines are simply adorable and fun, I’m worried it maybe a choking hazzard for the little ones. So, I’m opting to forego the bubble gum in place of something else more child safe. I think they will really enjoy the baskets and keep them occupied for the night.

What else should I include that is child safe?

Miss Apple, Is the reception outdoors? I know this sounds “out there”, but kids love wind mills. They get so entranced by stuff like this, blowing it, making it move, making their friends chase after them while they are trying to make it move.

The most popular kid thing at my wedding were little plastic cups of “farting noise” goo! They’re the goopy stuff you stick your finger in and it makes a “pppbbbbt” sound. Rather childish, I know, but they were a big hit amongst the 8-year-olds!

I found them at the Oriental Trading Co. but I’m sure you can find them at any novelty shop.

i had a question ladies -
i wanted to make little basket for the our younger guests to keep them occupied, but will the crayons be an issue w/ the reception venue? what if they doodle on the tablecloth? or is it all okay since they’re washable?

I had the same thought about the crayons and our reception venue (plus our ceremony is going to be long so I might give out our “kid goody bags” beforehand) and spent some time on Oriental Trading’s website coming up with all sorts of non-messy, non-chokable and quiet activities: puzzles, tops, yo-yos, slinkies, origami kit, etc. I don’t know if crayon washes out of tablecloths, and I know it doesn’t wash off walls….

Crayola makes washable crayons & markers. Check out their website at http://www.crayola.com. Also look into hiring a face painter to keep the kids occupied for an hour of two during the reception.
