About Mrs. Lime

Please Don’t Hate

March 20th, 2007 @ 1:14 pm by Mrs. Lime

Why? Because my centerpieces involve carnations. That’s right, I said carnations. See?

Major ew to the silver urn-like vessel (IMO - remember, I’m a Modernist and minimalist practically since birth. Ask my mom, even). He just used something of the final product’s approximate diameter and height as I didn’t get the ones I’m providing to him before the trial.

MUCH better. I stuck the whole thing in the vessel I will be providing (which is why the flowers aren’t sitting quite as low as they will be). It’s from Ikea. And you already thought I was cheap for having carnation-only centerpieces. I may encircle the white with some ribbon. Or I may stay true to my minimalist roots and leave it stark white to contrast against the red.

What a difference a vase makes, right?

And now, onto the bridesmaid bouquets.

Some kind of roses (I hate roses, but they do add nice texture and deeper color to give the bouquet more depth), red dahlias, hypericum berries, and the tiniest hint of green that starts with a “pitts.” The dahlias won’t be *quite* as day-glo red as my camera burned the color out a bit, for some reason, and these were white ones dyed red. The red dahlias aren’t yet in season but should be in August. They’ll be hand tied and wrapped in some of the 150 yards of aqua ribbon I purchased over the weekend [post on that craziness coming soon to a blog near you!]

i don’t like carnations in general, but when they’re used in big bunches like that without other flowers, they look awesome. love it!

i’ve always found carnations to look great when they’re bunched together like that. it looks so full and fluffy.

me too, mrs. bee. i really hated them until i found a few arrangements of them bunched tightly. ah, the things we much do to keep within budget. i think it’s a fine compromise, though, as i’m happy with them, especially for the price i’m paying.

I don’t like carnations much either–especially dyed ones –but I think they look great all bunched together like that. And it certainly works for a minimalist! That’s rather what I’m doing for my CPs, just with cream roses. Not that roses bunch together quite the same way, but you get the idea. In a world where giant, blowsy, frothing tall wedding centerpieces are pushed on you, I think there’s a lot to be said for low, tight arrangements of one color. Sophisticated, and inexpensive (depending on the flower used.)

I agree with bee about the full factor. I love peonies and I might use carnations to get that look! :) And I hate roses too. With a passion. I think they involve do imagination when a guy gives them to you as a gift–unless they are inusual in color or variety. I actually think I might have garden roses at the wedding…again, becuase peonies are out of season. ;)

Silver urn-like vessels are Satan. Yay for IKEA cereal bowls!

I am definitely using the same type of tightly packed carnation centerpieces for our reception too. Yours look great!

Another cool red flower — cockscomb. Different shape and really velvety texture.

thanks for the comments, all!

miss strawberry, yep. there are ways to get fullness without peonies. i also thought about mums, dahlias, ranunculus (won’t be in season, but we’ll be able to get a few for bouts), garden roses, and i forget what else the florists in interviewed suggested.

ginny, i just saw the images you collected on your blog. they look great!

iris, thanks for the suggestion. i have a love/hate relationship with coxcomb. i love it’s unique shape and sculptural-ness. BUT anything in the category “vegetable” grosses me out. for example, my florist wrote, “NO amaranthus!!! It creeps her out!” on my quote. yes, that’s a direct quote. hah.

jaggy, dahlias/angel/august. twins.net ;)

ahem. in the category “vegetable” that is FURRY, that has any type of furry or fuzzy quality to it, i meant.

your cp is so pretty & fluffly - i likes!
i really like the minimalist look w/ the white vase. it keeps it simple and allows the redness of the flowers to standout.
i think your bouuets will look great w/ the aqua ribbon!

I am totally with you! I like carnations (mostly like Bee said, when in bunches like that or on a wreath or pomander) and they are my birth flower. ;-) And, like you, I don’t care for roses–most of them–at all! I would rather have a sweeter or more wild flower like a tulip or dahlia, or PEONY! :-)

When we were at Tiffany & Co in NYC last month, guess what was displayed? Low (about 5 inches tall) square clear glass containers with medium-opened plain red roses, and a wide green leaf lining the glass (so the stems are not visible). THAT’S SIMPLE.

I had red dahlias and roses as my bouquet last September, and I loved it! Also, I had the same berries. I got so many compliments on the combination, I hope that you love it too!

I am thinking of the tightly bunched burgandy/wine carnations for my wedding as my bouquets and the like. How many did you use for the centerpieces?

anna - sorry, i have no idea as my florist took care of this and made sure it was as full as i’d like. i counted flowers from some of my pro photos from our wedding day, and it looks to be somewhere between 2-3 dozen to get as tight of a look as we did in a 6″ diameter vessel. hope this helps!
