About Beehive

Beehive

March 21st, 2007 @ 5:28 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. njbride07 is 1/2″ shorter than her fiance and needs great flat, formal shoes. She’s tried bridal shoe designers but nothing has caught her eye. Any suggestions on where to look?
  2. Jenny wants to know how much you tip the photographer? And the makeup artist and hairdresser who quoted $400 for three sessions.
  3. Sandee didn’t include her ceremony in her invitations because of lack of seats. Whats the best way to include ceremony invites to her close friends and family? A separate insert? How should she word it?
  4. bride07 needs ideas on creative things for ringbearers to carry? Her flowergirl is carrying a buildabear that someone gave her when she got engaged.
  5. Pencils wants to know the easiest way to make a petal cone. She wants to bend, doublestick tape, punch holes and thread ribbon through. Is there a specific size that’s best?
  6. lisabaobei wants to do a gourmet cookie or pair of mini cupcakes but is concerned about freshness/time it takes to individually wrap them (the day before the wedding). Bakery recommendations in NYC or northern NJ? Some have expressed wanting a more tangible favor…. Thoughts?

2. I think ms. bee addressed this in a post way back in time, here is what martha stewart says:

“Hairstylists and Makeup Artists
Even though it’s a particularly special day, you can still tip stylists and makeup artists as you would for a regular appointment-15 to 20 percent. For each assistant who helps with secondary tasks, such as shampooing, plan on giving a gratuity of $3 to $5.

You can hand out tips in envelopes directly to stylists, or leave them at the salon’s front desk. If you’re short on cash, it’s fine to tip by check or include it on a charge. If a stylist comes to your home or the wedding site, tip as you would at a salon, but in general, makeup artists and hair stylists who own their own businesses are not tipped.

Photographers, Videographers, Florists, and Wedding Coordinators
For people who own their own businesses, as many of these vendors do, tipping isn’t necessary. “They’ve already negotiated their fees and expect only that amount of money,” says Jeremy Faryar of LIFEstories Film, a New York City videography company that specializes in weddings. For photographers, videographers, and florists who do not own their own businesses, tip $30 to $50; wedding coordinators should be given about $50 to $100.

If you feel that the service you received from one of these vendors was extraordinary (say, if the videographer stayed and took footage of an after-wedding party even though it wasn’t in his contract), an additional 10 percent tip would be a nice gesture, says Ruth L. Kern, an etiquette consultant in Barrington, Illinois. Or you might send a thank-you gift such as flowers or a print from your photographer showing the vendor in action at your wedding.”

Perfect Details has some very pretty low shoes:

http://www.perfectdetails.com/bridal_shoes_flats-low-heels.html

The Gisela by Beatrice Ong is gorgeous, but was out of my price range, and the Powell is what I bought, and it’s absolutely beautiful. However it’s not flat, it has a 1″ heel. Shannon Britt has beautiful flat shoes–one of the Bees bought them:

Oh, and there’s also Shelley George’s Forget Me Knot shoe:

http://www.dyeableshoestore.com/dyeable-shoe-store/pumps/forgetmeknot.asp

Perfect Details has it on sale for $39, but only a size 10B. Also, Peter Fox has a lovely flat shoe on sale for $200. It’s gorgeous in person, I was in the shop the other day.

Shelley George has two other pairs of really pretty flat shoes on her site:

http://www.shelleygeorge.com/category/008495.shtml

There’s always French Sole shoes too:

http://www.frenchsoleshoes.com/

Ballet slippers are so popular now you could undoubtedly find some gorgeous ones if you want color. Bluefly often has Delman ballet slippers at a good discounted price.

That’s about it for my knowledge on flat bridal shoes! I’m only an inch and a half shorter than my groom so I did a lot of looking myself. ;)

would anyone know of a good site that indicates weather averages for a particular day? for example, if i am planning a hot july wedding because of our tight schedule, is there a site that would tell me what the average weather has been like over the past years? thanks in advance!

Tipping-

Agreed with the above post, but if you want more information, here is a great article on tipping. My florist and photographer are self employed, so the price is already set in stone, and we have had this discussion on side conversations as well (they are friends). My caterer has figured his gratuity in his final bill (for his wait staff) and my bartenders will be getting a tip as well.

We would like to have a large group photo with all our wedding guests and would like to know others’ experiences. We will have 175-200 guests at our wedding and are thinking the easiest thing would be to take a photo of all our guests seated. Should we walk down the aisle and then walk back in for the photo?

Our cocktail hour is in a garden area at our reception site and so women in high heels will be stuck walking on the grass. I thought it would be nice to provide some flip flops or flat shoes in the ladies room - any ideas on where in NYC or northern jersey to find cheap but cute looking flip flops?

Lisa,

Check weather.com. Type in the zip code of where the wedding will be and then look on the left for something that says “Getting married in (your city)?” It’ll give you all you need to know!

Lisa, the site that I use is wunderground.com. You can enter in a place and then you can see what the weather was like in that area from past years.

For brides that included a traditional chinese tea ceremony, can you tell me if you purchased a special tea pot/tea cups for the occassion and if you did, do you have reccommendations for a nice set? We have about 40 relatives to serve tea to and I’m wondering if we need to get 40 tea cups or do you have someone wash and re-use the tea cups during the tea ceremony? According to my FFIL, their traditions are that they only serve tea to married elders and not single elders, but I find it so odd that we are serving tea to more distant relatives rather than my FI’s single uncle that has watched him grow up. Any one else know of this tradition?

Hi Beehive!

I’m hoping some Connecticut/Western Mass brides can help a girl out. I’m looking (long and hard) for a reasonably priced person to do lighting in my tent. The rental company does very utlitarian lighting, and I want something that will be much more special (pinlights, etc). But the one quote I receievd was for $10,000!!!!

Thank you in advance!

Mrs. Bee

jenny - generally you don’t tip a photographer. but the hair/makeup person i’d divide the cost by 3, so it’s $133 per session, and tip 15-20% at each session based on that amount.

sandee - people often include a separate insert for receptions, so you can certainly do one for ceremonies. sample wording might be something like (depending on the formality of the rest of your invites):

Please join us for the
Wedding Ceremony of Jane and John Doe
time
location
address
city, state

4. bride07 - i suggested this in miss kiwis post yesterday, but maybe no one liked it. ;) i think it’s cute tho…. your flowergirl could ring a bell down the aisle and say, “the bride is coming!”

5. pencils, mrs. butterfly made very simple ones… let me dig up the post!

6. lisabaobei - sugar sweet sunshine is very sweet but yummilicious. :)

M,

I’m not sure that this is a great idea especially for your more mature guests. Lots of ladies still wear hosiery or don’t like baring their feet at all (my mother included). Maybe include some kind of slipper or closed toe if you know how many guests might appreciate the option.
Just a thought! Have a wonderful wedding!

You dun have to buy 40 sets….here in Singapore, we use only 4 tea cups and 1 tea pot…..get the helpers/MOH to be at the side ready with a bowl (large), or small pail, to pour out the tea from the previous servings, and to rinse it with clean water, also in a pail beside the serving area……so it’s 2 pails, 1 empty, 1 with clean water………4 teacups, a teapot and a serving tray..

Congrats and Good Luck!

Christine,

Butter yellow to go with slate blue? So many lovely shades of light yellow. I went to Home Depot and grabbed some paint color samples (you know, on the little cards) to play with at home. I placed them on a white sheet of paper and looked at various shades together.

My colors are butter yellow and eggplant - a lot like the colors of an iris.

Best of luck.
