Walmart Weddings

March 21st, 2007 @ 11:42 am by Mrs. Blueberry

Is this for real?

A wedding in the Wal-Mart garden center? Just so you can get married on 7/7/07?

Here’s what the “$5,000 wedding package” prize for 7 couples entails:
~A 77-guest wedding in the Garden Center, decorated by G-squared
~Bride’s and groom’s wedding bands, 14k yellow gold + diamond
~100 wedding invitations (but you can only have 77 people there? Even if everyone is single that’s still not right…)
~Wedding cake and groom’s cake
~Bride’s and bridesmaids’ bouquets (up to 7) and groom’s and groomsmens’ boutonniƒ¨res (up to 7)
~Digital cameras for bride and groom (in pink and black, no less!)
~Digital photo frame from Polaroid
~GPS system “to carry with you anywhere you go on your honeymoon and life’s journey” (OK now that’s pretty cute!)
~Food for the reception (party trays, sub sandwiches, and a shrimp ring)
~$1,000 Wal-Mart gift card

So? What do you think?

i try not to be overly snobby, but a walmart wedding is tacky. i guess i’ll have to see the after pictures to prove me wrong.

I think it’s funny! Andrew & I worked there back in 2004. That’s how we met. We’ve joked around about getting married there…haha. We’d never actually DO it, but it’s funny to imagine!

I’m torn too, it might be great for people to enter if they never really wanted a huge wedding, that way they still get to have a party- but I wouldn’t wear a princess-style wedding gown or have a black tie dress code. I would hope whoever wins, sincerely wanted to do this and would then turn it into a “picnic-style” casual wedding.

This reminds me, whatever happened to that weekly wedding news post that Mrs. Bee used to do? There were so many great stories and articles in that!

It’s a great idea for those low on budget! Hey..at least it’s a step above a drive through wedding in reno or las vegas.

meh…i don’t like the idea of being given a wedding band. then again, i don’t quite enjoy wal-mart either [what's the point of low prices if i can't find anything?]. lol. maybe i am a snob. but it does seem like it’d be fun.

Sounds like a great rehearsal dinner! It could be a lot of fun. Just don’t tell them that your actual wedding is the next day.

I think big expensive dresses worn for a few hours are tacky. I love the idea of a Walmart wedding, but I am becoming bridezilla, because my wedding is three weeks away. We are having a formal sit down dinner for 60, choreographing our Argentine tango, and Walmart is such a departure from everything I am that it would have been a hoot.

No thanks. Sorry, I don’t like Walmart. I can’t stand their ethics and the way they treat their employees, bla bla. So yeah.

I love it! I can totally see some cool hipsters doing this, because coudln’t it be sort of “ironic funny”, like for those couples who are sort of anti-wedding? I think it’s funny, and if I hadn’t already put down my (non refundable, gulp) deposit on our venue, would totally be tempted to enter!

Kristine- I agree with you. I abhor everything wal-mart.

Yes, Kristine, I won’t elaborate on their terrible business practices; I agree with you, but there is just something so ironic in a Walmart wedding that would tempt my usual consciousness.

Ditto Kristine. I am big Anti-Walmart. But even if I liked Walmart, it just screams red neck wedding. What’s worse, a McD’s wedding or a Walmart wedding? You can have a lovely budget wedding without going to the Dark Side. Wait, that’s MS. You know what I mean. :)

I think if K and Andrew met and fell in love while working at a WalMart store, then it might be a good thing. After all there are so many traditional weddings going on. Something different can’t hurt. You see people doing the high adventure weddings and all. Why not a WalMart wedding? If it brings back good memories of a time when the couple met, I think it is great. I would be happy to attend a WalMart wedding. There is something for a budget wedding in a day when weddings have become the first mortgage. It also would be a good thing for WalMart if two WalMart employees got married there. (If the employees are well known and loved, it can be an asset to the company). It doesn’t mean that the couple can’t do something special every year on their anniversary to confirm their love for each other. Go for it K!!!

I don’t think I could ever get married in Walmart, it just doesn’t have the tone most brides are trying to achieve, lol!!! But I just got married last weekend and a lot of our accessories…including the CAKE…cake from Walmart. There was no cake left, people kept asking where we got it because it was so tasty and beautiful. :0)
