About Beehive

Beehive

March 22nd, 2007 @ 5:15 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. lisa is looking for a site that shows weather averages for a particular day over the past years.
  2. Brooke wants to have a large group photo with all their 175-200 wedding guests, and would like to know others’ experiences. The easiest way seems to be to have everyone seated… should they walk down the aisle and then back in for the photos?
  3. m’s cocktail hour is in a garden area where heels will sink in, so she thought it’d be nice to provide flipflops or flat shoes in the ladies room. Any ideas on where to buy cute, cheap flipflops in NYC/northern NJ?
  4. min wants to know where to find these glass votive sticks cheaper and in stock.
  5. glass needs help making a map/direction card for her invites. She tried to follow the directions in the knot map bio for 3 hours, but can’t seem to get it!
  6. Christine is trying to think of a color scheme for her July wedding. She’s thinking slate blue for her bms, but needs a punch of color to include in the flowers. Any suggestions?
  7. Cherry Blossom wants to know if you purchased a special tea pot/cups for the Chinese tea ceremony. If so, do you have recommendations for a nice set? She has 40 relatives and is wondering if she needs 40 cups, or if you wash and reuse them during the ceremony. And according to her FFIL, their tradition is to only serve tea to married elders. Anyone heard of this?
  8. h is invited to a black tie optional mid summer afternoon wedding. Is a red satin floor length gown too much?
  9. tentbride is looking for a reasonably priced lighting person in Connecticut/Western Mass for her tented wedding. One quote she got was for 10 grand.
  10. JW wants to know what kind of printer is best for diy invitations, programs, etc. Any advice on printers and ink would be appreciated.

Lisa,
The Weather Channel (weather.com) should have what you are looking for there.

m - i don’t know when your wedding is, but if you can hold off till the summer, target usually has $1 flip flops in their dollar section right when you walk in. last year for the fourth of july they had red or white or blue ones with a big floppy flower on them - very cute! and only $1!

Christine - how about adding a bright orange and then a rich chocolate brown? I really like that combo because it has a bit of everything. Brown adds some sophistication, orange adds some sunny summery fun and blue ties them both together and if you go with a shimmery blue it will add some sparkle too!

3. m, try old navy. they sometimes have sales where they end up being less than $1 each, but you have to be diligent in checking out the stores. the ones on sale are usually in limited colors, too. if you’re not picky about color, that may be the way to go.

6. christine, i’m doing aqua (not slate blue, but close) and red to punch up the flowers. orange would be nice and fresh for a summer wedding. you can always do brown, which is oh so popular right now, but getting played out, IMO.

H: I read an MSN article a while back on do’s & don’ts on guest attire–and one of the don’ts was on wearing a red dress to a wedding. I’d have to agree that it’s just too much.

Glass,

I was having the same issues with creating a wedding map. Then I found this guy through ebay of all places. He makes a customized map for $35 and his samples are really really impressive. He started working on mine the day after I contacted him (yesterday) and it isn’t done yet but I’m super impressed so far. His name is Charles: c_harles@yahoo.com. He’s a professional GPS mapmaker and he’ll email you the file to print on whatever paper you want.

Christine - I would go with orange or an orangey-yellow colour. I think that would be very punchy and fun!

h - I am guessing you’re hoping to hear that a floor-length red satin gown will work, but in my opinion that would be more suitable for a very formal winter evening event. I think you’d feel more comfortable in a tea length dress of some sort for the middle of summer.

JW - if you’re printing on a home printer, you probably will get best results with a laser printer as opposed to ink. Ink works, but most ink home printers kind of suck and can be a little streaky. Make sure to do a test run first.

JW — I had really good results with my hp 5150 inkjet, which isn’t even an expensive printer. I think it’s probably outdated now (and so you can’t buy one) but there’s probably a newer version of it out. It printed every size, even down to the response cards, perfectly, and the ink was dry almost immediately.

Christine: I would suggest shimmery white and Barbie pink, but you have to make sure you don’t end up with a red-white-and-blue wedding. What about lemon yellow and lime green?

Brooke: We took a picture of all of our 125 guests and it was wonderful. How we did it: we had our officiant announce it at the end of the ceremony, after our kiss, but before we walked back down the aisle, so everyone was still seated. In our case, we asked everyone to gather in a patio area, and our photographer stood on a ladder we brought just for this. We still recessed down the aisle, got into our getaway car, drove around the block and came back for the pictures. It worked great!

Christine: we used slate blue too. Though we went with white flowers, I had through about pink, coral and yellow flowers, all of which would have been neat. Check out the BlueBio on the Knot for more ideas. I run it and there have been a lot of great ideas for contrasting colors.

Cherry Blossom - regarding the tea ceremony - my mom just bought a new tea set in Chinatown — it wasn’t anything fancy although it could be if you wanted it to be. From snapshots taken of our tea ceremony by other people, there were a lot of tea cups being used so I guess you could have 40 tea cups. But I think it should be ok to re-wash them and use it over. There just might not be enough time to do that.

In terms of serving only the married elders question — everyone we served turned out to be married - our parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles and older siblings. So I don’t know the answer to that question!

New Question.

Can I get some help with votes for a free engagement shoot. My fiance and I are finalists and the voting is open for a week. We live in Miami and are getting married in Costa Rica next January.

We are couple #3.

Thanks, I don’t know if you will post this kind of stuff or not.

JW- We went through 3 or 4 printers before finding one that didn’t bend our invites or leave ink spots on the edges. The one we ended up with was an HP laser jet printer. Sorry I don’t remember the model.

CherryBlossom,

The tea cups that comes with the teapot set should be the ones you serve to your elders, e.g grandparents and parents (or close aunts and uncles). The remaining folks can use those tiny “bathroom” cups. Or, just plastic cups.

M - I’m doing the same thing for my wedding except I’m putting a basket of slippers in the ladies bathroom stating something along the lines of “We want you to keep dancing all night so please help yourself if your feet hurt.” (Obviously the final sign will be much more poetic). A really good place to get good slippers would be Chinatown. You get those cut ones with the mesh top and cute sequence and beading. And as always, bargain bargain bargain (esp since you’ll be buying in bulk).
