About Beehive

Beehive

March 23rd, 2007 @ 6:18 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. Kara is on a budget but doesn’t want her centerpieces to look budget. Shes considering making centerpieces w/ candles of varying heights and small potted plants and/or loose flowers. Has anyone seen this or have pics? Her bms are wearing purple, so maybe she could tie ribbon around the candles to tie it together?
  2. Natalie is looking for blue or purple wedding shoes for her warm climate wedding (aka no suede). She wears a size 10 W, and is looking for something with a 2.5″ heel or less. Any suggestions?
  3. fishgal is looking for a wedding cake vendor in So Cal besides Beverly’s Best.
  4. Jayma heard about a store in Atlanta on Howell Mill Rd that has tons of wedding supplies. Anyone know the name? She’s looking for tulle gloves.
  5. Sandy is looking for a place to rent wedding dresses/bm dresses in the OC or LA area.

Natalie, I have size 10W feet too so I feel your pain! check out Zappos.com - They’re pretty expensive but they have the biggest selection of women’s shoes in wide widths. AND you can search by a combo of size, width, color, heel height & style. I found these searching for women’s dress, 10W, blue, 1.5-2.5″ heel - I love them so much I might get them for my own wedding now (in gold)!

Fishgal: We got our cake from Great Dane Bakery in Los Alamitos, it was great. Roosmoor is really known for their chocolate shavings cake.

sandy - that question was posed in a previous beehive here - http://www.weddingbee.com/2007/03/06/beehive-124/ and several readers chimed in.

there are quite a few places in koreatown where you can rent gowns/bm dresses. there’s a place on the wilshire and st. andrews that my brother’s wife rented a pretty gown from. they have bm dresses too.

Natalie, besides Zappos, try out http://www.shoemall.com. I’ve found some gorgeous shoes there also that are in wide widths.

I’m having an outdoor summer wedding and would love to outfit the groom and perhaps the chuppah holders in light beige suits. Does anyone have good ideas of where I could buy some nice, light beige/natural-colored suits? I live in New York City. Thanks in advance!

Does anyone know a place to get a nice barong that isn’t too feminine? I have searched for a while now, but I am sure there is a better selection somewhere out there than the few I have found.

I’m waiting for engagement photo quotes, but am curious about how much everyone else paid. Please include the amount of photos you had printed as well.

fishgal- Check out The Cake Collection:
http://www.thecakecollection.com/
They made my friend a 15″ heart shaped cake (one layer, small wedding) for under $100. She didn’t say it was for a wedding and it was delicious. They gave her tastings and everything.

My very good friend is getting married in TWO weeks! April 8th! I just finished getting the rings and picking a photography place for them. We live in the LA area of California. We actually picked the rice krispie flower centerpiece idea from here and also am thinking about jordan almonds. Does anyone know where in LA can we buy Jordan almonds? Does downtown have it? Also, where does one buy those little cellophane bags? Thanks!

Natalie:
Check out J. Renee shoes. They come in wide widths. I know they sell on zappos but also do a goole search to see where else you can find them.

Hi! I was wondering if you know of anyone who had their makeup done at a makeup counter and was happy with it? If so, where did you get it done? I’m considering it for my wedding… and was referred to an artist at Bobbi Brown. Do you know if they have a minimum purchase requirement for getting makeup done at those counters? Thank you very much!

I need some accessorizing advice. My gown is a princess/A-line dress, without beads or lace and thin spaghetti straps. (Whew- that was wordy!) I don’t normally wear jewellery, so I have no idea how to accessorize. I think I definitely need something because it’s so simple, but I also want to keep it elegant. Thanks in advance for your fashion tips! :)

Kara, I think the best way to save money on centerpieces is to avoid big flower arrangements. Candles, plants or floating flowers (I had floating dahlias and gerbera daisies) are good, as are fruit (oranges, lemons) and glass/marbles. My advice is not to sweat the centerpieces. Guests don’t care about them (I find they often get in the way of talking to the person across the table) and they don’t show up in many pictures.

Kara - pay close attention to size. A small centerpiece with several votives around it might be way cheaper than a larger centerpiece. Our centerpieces are small in comparison to the size of our tables, but we are having little dishes of candy in our wedding colors around the table, giving the illusion of something big that takes up space, while still fitting into our budget.

Janet - we actually just got back from our engagement shoot on our college campus! We hired a student with photography experience to save a little on the costs (contacted photography professors for references) and it worked out great! For three hours of shooting, including two outfit changes, he charged us $200. This doesn’t include any prints, but does include a CD of all the images touched up and the copyrights to all of them as well. He took about 400 shots and figures we’ll get at least 100 good ones to use. We’re printing them ourselves, but liked that option the best since we don’t need lots of prints. (P.S. - we are in Texas if that helps)

Kara, I’m using different sized cylinders to as centerpieces, along with some hydrangeas I will be buying from a wholesaler. My wedding is in June and I plan on selling my cylinders. If your wedding is after that, and you’re interested, you can have them for 50% of what I bought them for.
You can see my mockup of the centerpieces and cylinders on my xanga (link on my name).

Good luck!

I am looking for a non-traditional large outdoor venue in Virginia, West Virginia or Maryland. We are thinking 200-300 guests but want something rustic, casual and simple. Many of the estates and outdoor properties I have looked at are too formal. Can someone help me find the hidden vendors (ie- the ones who don’t advertise as readily?).

AK - try the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley in Winchester - the gardens around the historic home are heavenly and you can create whatever atmosphere you want. Belle Grove Plantation in Middletown, VA is also beautiful and open, more casual than the other plantation homes in the area in my opinion. It would’ve been my pick if we weren’t getting married in WV. Otherwise if you know anyone with a farm, your best bet is to work out something with them. There are very few places that accommodate that many people around here. Good Luck!

They offer a wonderful rustic venue with 250 waterfront acres. Percy & Mmarie are the owners and are very polite, full of charm!
