About Beehive

Beehive

March 26th, 2007 @ 4:23 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. Jane is having an outdoor summer wedding and is looking for nice, light beige/natural-colored suits in NYC.
  2. rymang06 is looking for a nice barong that isn’t too feminine.
  3. phr0gg has a chiffon gown and is considering getting a chiffon veil. Has anyone used one before and would you recommend them?
  4. Janet is waiting for engagement photo quotes, and is curious how much you paid and how many prints you got.
  5. Colleen is looking for songs for her wedding video for the recap, and 2 for the cocktail hour.
  6. Elizabeth is looking for a place in LA where she can buy jordan almonds and cellophane bags.
  7. Chiara wants to know if anyone has had their makeup done at a makeup counter and been happy with it? If so, where did you get it done, and was there a minimum purchase requirement?
  8. MissCJ’s gown is a princess/a-line dress without beads/lace and thin spaghetti straps. She doesn’t normally wear jewelry so would like advice on how to accessorize - simple but elegant.
  9. Leslie is looking to get a rubber stamp of her monogram made. Recommendations for sites w/ reasonable prices?
  10. BrklynBride08 is wondering if $160 pp for the reception is too much? She’s having 300 guests, and it doesn’t include tax or 20% gratuity. What do you think?

I have a question for the hive. I am looking to get a rubber stamp made with our monogram (I designed it). Does anyone have any recommendations for sites that will make a rubber stamp from a custom image for a reasonable price?

Chiara - I know that at MAC, you have to buy at least 4 products. I haven’t had one done before, but am probably going to for my wedding. I would go to your favorite counter and ask for a trial.

Hi Weddingbee! I was wondering if $160 per person for the reception is too much? What is the average price per person everyone is paying? I will be having like 300 guests so $160 pp which does not include tax and 20% gratuity is quite hefty! I was thinking if I should just do a day time reception for $120? What do you guys think? Thanks for all your input!

Leslie, try impressrubberstamps.com

Chiara, at least at MAC in Seattle they don’t force you to buy anything, but it is curteous to do so. I go to MAC here regularly just for fun and as far as I can tell, they don’t like when you just come in on the day of your wedding to get your makeup done. It puts them under a lot of pressure to give you exactly what you want with no practice and generally a very low fee (whatever you decide to buy). If I were you I wouldn’t want to go without any kind of trial.

chiara- i know that at the clinique counter that if you get your makeup done, they want you to buy at least $25 worth of makeup. which isnt that hard to do. but i dont know how it would be without a trial. because i just got it done for a special occasion and not for a big event like a wedding.

Leslie, i used simonstamps.com for the wedding logo my sister designed for us. I don’t know much about rubber stamps, but FMIL who lives and breathes such things said the quality was excellent. The prices were super reasonable too; i got two stamps — a one inch and a 1.5 inch stamp for $22 (and that included the shipping).

2. rymang06,
Try http://www.barongatsaya.com or http://www.barongelegance.com. Is it possible for you or a relative to have one custom made in the Philippines? You could get a better quality one with a design you approve of for a bit cheaper that way.

9. Leslie,
I got a custom rubber stamp made at http://www.impressrubberstamps.com. You can email them a pdf of your design or snail mail them a pic and they turn it into a stamp. I went the pdf route. Their customer service is awesome, and my stamp turned out way better than I expected. Turn around time is about a week.

Leslie:
I used for my custom stamps. You can upload a .pdf of your design. Turnaround time was fairly quick (it’s been awhile so I don’t remember exact time).

7. Chiara- I have had my make up done at Nordstrom by Mac and Estee Lauder. I loved MAC but I had to tell them not to make it too heavy. But I just didn’t have them use foundation and it looked great! I didn’t like Estee Lauder. But I think that had more to do with the girl lack of experience. My sister had her make up done with them once and she looked great. Just have an ide in mind what you like vs. dont like.

BrklynBride08,
I’d personally never pay $160pp (or $120 either), but that kinda of price wouldn’t surprise me for NYC. If you’re int’d, I’ve heard of a lot of great wedding halls out in LI that charge around $90pp + tax & grauity for a Sat. nite, if you can guarantee that many ppl.

Colleen, I second the Michelle Featherstone “We are Man and Wife”!! SUCH a good song - others could be “Home to Me” by Josh Kelley, “Day Before You” by Rascal Flatts, “Better Together” by Jack Johnson, “I Will be Here” by Steven Curtis Chapman, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” (tons of artists do this - I like Lauryn Hill’s version) or “This I Promise You” by NSync (I’m sure you’re FI would LOOOVE that)

Chiara- I’ve had my make-up done at Benefit, Clinique, and Estee Lauder. I was least impressed with EL, and had to buy like a minimum 30 dollars? Clinique and Benefit were the same minimum range…I think I’ve purchased two items that I needed every time. ;-) Or you buy what you liked.

I may be doing this but I will allow plenty of time and will be super explicit. I think I will be looking at Mac or Origins for my wedding (my MOH swears by Origins).

ok I know new york has a higher cost of living but that seems very high. I would check around. if you are set on that location…perhaps trying on a non traditional day to decrease the cost. good luck!

Jane,
They had some really nice suits at Banana Republic. That’s where we’re getting FIs suit.

Brklyn- if you are having a high end wedding in the middle of a big city then that would be the going rate (for example a reception at the Four Seasons in Downtown D.C. is 150 per person and up)..if you aren’t having a high end wedding or you are having your wedding outside of the main NYC area then I’d say that’s way too much.
It also depends on what it includes - is the 160 just for food or is it for food, open bar, venue rental, cake, decorations etc? I wouldn’t go just by the number I’d see what that number buys you.

brkyln- post on the NYC board on theknot. they’d know about rates and could make venue suggestions if you need it.

jane- many knotties on the destinations wedding board on theknot have posted about this. conduct a search for posts there.

good luck!

BrklynBride08,
I think the price depends on your venue as well as timing. If it’s high season in an upscale venue, then it sounds about right, but if you are outside of Manhattan and are in off season (November-March), then I would say you are definitely overpaying. As a measuring point, I am at just about $100 pp including tax and gratuities for my Late March wedding in Long Island, inclusive of open bar, ceremony, cake, and flower decorations for my ceremony.
