Suit Up

March 27th, 2007 @ 6:00 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

Mr. Kiwi is a large man. He’s a big teddy bear, about 6′3″ and built solidly. His size makes it hard to find a suit that looks good on him. Although the term “Big and Tall” is an insult to him, I love it. He’s big. He’s not fat, just big. I guess you’d call him “big boned”.

Anyway, Mr. Kiwi wants to wait until after the summer to start looking for suits. Since he works at a school during the typical months (Sept. through June) he’s often a little heavier during these times. During the summer though, he works the beach volleyball tournaments and loses weight. I can understand his reasoning for waiting, but I’d also like him to take a look around to see what he likes, since he’ll most likely have a suit made for him.

A friend of ours who married last year said that her husband shopped for his suit early, and it was a good thing, because a lot of work had to be done. Another thing kinda making me want to start looking now is our scheduling - after his summer schedule of traveling, he’ll be right back in school full time, which means full evenings and weekends. With our wedding two months after school starts, when does that leave time for suit shopping?

A question: when does your guy shop for the big day outfit?

My guy went shopping about 5 months before the wedding. If Mr. Kiwi is going to get a suit custom made, he should shop around, order the suit, then wait to have his fittings later. Any reputable place (nordstrom, etc) should be able to do that for him. It’s a lot like buying a wedding dress, but the lag time is much shorter!

if he’s getting a suit custom made then definitely he should start early as possible…measurements are very hard to get exactly right!

Addendum - although we placed the order in February, the suit is not yet done and won’t be until mid-April (one month before). I’d recommend getting things done earlier, rather than later, because tailors do not like to be rushed and you’d rather have them do a good job, than a poor rushed job!

That being said, places like Nordstrom/Saks should also be able to get a suit in within 2 months time. We ordered ahead of schedule because it’s a small, local place that doesn’t have as much manpower as a big dept store.

Well, we’re nearly three months out and we went shopping for the first time on Sunday…Unfortunately, it didn’t go very well.

First of all, we were looking for a medium or dark brown, but that was practically nonexistant. To make matters worse, FI wears a 46 jacket and a 38 pant, but size 48 suits come with size 42 pants…And did I mention that he’s only 5′8″, but has a 19 1/2″ neck? *SIGH* I really wanted him to get a nice suit that actually fits him properly! I am thinking about custom, but the lowest place I have seen so far is about $700. We are definitely going with a custom shirt though…otherwise he looks like he’s wearing a tent! :)

I hope you have better luck with your shopping! But I would start sooner rather than later.

Yup. And good thing too, he had a terrible time finding a suit that fit and it needed lots of custom alterations. Who would have thought it was this hard to find British Tan in a 42 short for a beach wedding? Jos. A. Banks sold seperates that seemed to work pretty well.

At one point, he purchased 6 different suits to make sure the color would match the dress.

P started shopping this last month–four months before the wedding. The BP is buying suits from Banana Republic or Gap, not sure. :-)

Hi Miss Kiwi,

We’re getting married in early September and my FI and I, along with our best man, started this month. However his best man started researching tailors in Jan/Feb. We are also having a custom suit made as my FI doesn’t own a suit and never fits beautifully into off the rack suits. The tailor said it would be about a 6-8 week process from the first meeting to the finished suit, but I wouldn’t put it off too much.

He can attend the first meeting to discuss fabrics and what he likes (two button, three button, pockets, lapel etc), pick out the fabric and then go back in the summer when he is in top shape to get measured. GL!

We shopped when our best resource had the “big sale” — Syms has its giant sale in January each year.
