Your Marital Home

March 27th, 2007 @ 8:28 am by Mrs. Bluebell

Mr. Bluebell and I have been living together for almost 4 years, renting all the way. It’s not really because we’re getting married that we started thinking about buying now, but it seems like there must be some correlation since so many people buy their first home to move into when they get married! So, it’s time for a few polls on living situations:

Did you and your fiance move in together before getting married?

To clarify on my choices, we were living together before we got engaged, but we had two other roommates because we were all in school. We had plans to get an apartment just the two of us at the beginning of the year (we graduated in December) and he just happened to propose to me between apartments when we were home for the holidays. So I said we were living together, but it wasn’t exclusively us until after the proposal.

Also, we are staying in the same apartment after we get married, but just until the lease is up. Our current lease expires at the end of this month, and we are upgrading to a bigger apartment at the same complex. We didn’t want to stay in an apartment a whole year before looking at the option to buy, but since our wedding is in October, a 6-month lease would put us right before the wedding and a 9-month lease would put us right after the wedding and we didn’t want to be dealing with the stress of finding/moving into a new house on top of the stress of the final stages of the wedding. So we’ll be back in our apartment for just a few months after we marry, to settle down, write thank-you notes, and finish paying off the wedding credit cards, and then we’ll be looking into buying our first home!

I picked “We live alone and are moving in together after the wedding,” which is kind of true. We get married on 8/4 and my lease is up on 7/31 (SUCH a conveniently happy coincidence!). Since 7/31 is a Tuesday, I’m moving in w/him (into the condo he owns) the last weekend in July — 1 week before we get married.

FH and I have lived together for the last 3+ years, and actually chose to buy a house before getting married- it was one or the other at the time. We purchased our house 2 years ago, and then waited to get married until this year. My grandparents had a hard time with this at first, and then we explained to them that this was the time for us to get into a house, and they finally supported our decision and are great with it now. I think its just because they are glad I found FH!

I live with my parents and go to college. My FI has an apartment with a roommate. After the wedding, we’ll live together in his current apartment. Once I graduate (a year after the wedding), we’ll move into a new apartment.

Where are you going to live after we get married?

That question is sorta tricky for us…yes, we’re currently living in an apartment and yes we’ll continue to live there after the wedding, but that’s not our long-term plan at all. Once he finds out where he’s going to law school, we’ll be moving to whatever city that may be and then renting or possibly looking into buying a house. We don’t plan to rent any longer than we have to ;-)
