Beehive

March 28th, 2007 @ 5:20 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. lisa wants to know if anyone knows any websites or how to check if a particular day is “lucky” on the Chinese calendar. She could care less, but her parents would like to know.
  2. Sharon wants to know why most of the wedding preparations are done by the bride. How come most grooms don’t get involved with the planning?
  3. Julie is looking for DJ recommendations in the Seattle area. She wants to avoid someone who’s cheesy.
  4. m is looking for unique guestbook ideas like the wishbowl. Do you have pics, or any other unique ideas?
  5. VivaLaMonkee wants to know the approx. cost for videographers in the LA area. Any recommendations? Price ranges?
  6. SusanneW wants to know how you include return address on outer envelopes. The front? Back? At all? Do they have to be handwritten?
  7. Mary is looking for a good, affordable DJ in Dallas.
  8. bliss is looking for ideas on laying out accommodations insert for her DIY invites. Any suggestions?

Question: How do you include return address on Outer envelope of invitations? Do they go on the front, back, at all? Do they have to be handwritten?

Sharon, I think woman are more detail oriented in general. I think that is why we tend to get more involved than some grooms.

Sharon - my FI keeps telling me “It’s your day, you’ve been dreaming of it forever and I don’t want to wreck it for you.” He seems oblivious to the fact that I’ve repeatedly told him that part of that dream involves having a guy who actually helps! I think he’s just really afraid to disappoint me by planning something I wouldn’t have wanted. That, plus, most guys just don’t care as much about weddings as women. I don’t mean they don’t care about getting MARRIED, but the colour of the tablecloths and the blooms in the bouquets just don’t register on their radar for the most part.

m - I’m going to do a wishbox. I also like the idea of getting the guests to send in the wish cards ahead of time (maybe include with the invitation and they can send back with their RSVP card) and you can hang them with ribbon from an arch, so you get married under everyone’s good wishes for you as a couple! Other ideas I’ve seen include a framed photo of you and your FI where the canvas part of the frame is really large and everyone can sign the frame. Also a ceramic plate that everyone can sign is very popular.

Does anyone know any good, affordable DJs in Dallas? Thanks!

SusanneW - I’d probably put the return address on the back on the flap. You could get one of those nice embossers, that’s what I plan to do. Simple and discreet if you don’t want it to be shown.

Lisa - if you type up auspicious dates 2007 or anything of that sort in the search engine, you’ll get plentiful of results. If your parents read chinese, I’d recommend you go to y!international link … then choose Hong Kong … from there you can find option links the left task bar - you’d have to know how to read chinese or have your parents help you. that’s what FMIL did to find our dates. GIve this a shot … http://hk.yahoo.com/ or http://hk.astrology.yahoo.com/

susanne: you put it on the back flap of the outer envelope. the address should be the address of whoever is paying for the wedding, ie. the host/hosts. it can be handwritten, but often people either emboss it or have it engraved/thermographed.

lisa: why don’t your parents find out themselves if it’s important to them? they could go to a chinese astrologer if they are interested. that would be more accurate since it takes into account your and your fiance’s specific birth aspects. my parents looked a lunar calendar in taiwan. what year are you looking to get married? i can help you with 2007 lucky dates, but it’s already getting late in the year.

Sharon, guys are just incapable of coordinating all the details that come so naturally to us. Plus they suck at multi-tasking. And have terrible memories, which makes them even more ill-fated in comparing vendors, ideas, etc. My FI and I naturally ended up splitting up the work~ I’m planning the wedding, he’s finding our house. It’s great, my binder is full of ideas for dresses and centerpieces, his is full of house ads and mortage rate charts. And he’s going crazier finding one single house than I am finding a photographer, dj, florist, makeup artist, etc. See? They’re just not wired for it!

Sorry LIsa - the 2nd link I gave you was for astrology. I know FMIL used that to find our dates … but bc my chinese isn’t the greatest - I was testing out the one with the hearts on it …. But try getting your mom/dad to read the chinese for you. Hope it helps.

Question: I currently find myself stuck between a rock and a hard place. I have asked 3 people to be a bridesmaids for my wedding. Since then I have had a bit of a falling out with one of the girls where I realised that I only asked her because we have been friends for so long and it was almost expected. I now find that I have nothing in common with this person and I’m not really a fan of the person that she has become. The ideal situation would be for me to only have the 2 bridesmaids (my best friend and sister) but I couldn’t imagine un-asking someone to be my bridesmaid because that would be so hurtful.

Has anyone been in a similar situation?

Lisa–hmmm I don’t know about the feng shui site. It is considered very unlucky to get married during the lunar 7th month, which is usually from mid-August through mid-September. This is ghost month, and the idea is that one of you will be widowed early if you marry at this time. Of course, this is when my parents got married and so far they are okay. It’s all superstitious anyway.

the best way to find a “lucky date” is to see a chinese astrologer

mary - can you define cheap? the average for a Dallas DJ is going to run you around 1500 or more.

Em - it is considered pretty rude to univite someone to be a bridesmaid. If I were you I’d do all I can to work around her, that is - don’t give her anythign to do and don’t expect much from her. Get her measurments and then work with the other two bridesmaids primarily. If she’s not as great a friend then chances are she’ll be happy to not be responsible for shower/parties/etc. Who knows? Maybe she’ll pull through in the long run - you never know.

I just wanted to comment on the ad for Big Island Candies. They’re shortbread cookies are delicious!! Much tastier (and less floury) than the ones from Honolulu Cookie Company. If anyone is interested in using their cookies or other goodies as favors email: leila@bigislandcandies.com.

Julie - a very popular DJ for the women on The Knot is Sean Denard http://www.denardproductions.com. The reviews for him are crazy good–he keeps people dancing and is an extremely kind guy!

Miss Strawberry also has a great DJ, so you can email her for another rec. :-)

m: We are doing an origami variant on the wishbowl. Guests will write their wishes on the white sides of origami paper, then (following provided directions) fold them into cranes and put them in a large glass vase. We’ll take the crane-filled vase and put it on our mantle. :)

For awhile, we considered using a roll of butcher paper and paint and collecting everyone’s hands, but our wedding is way too big to make that work.

I had a college friend put blank pages on every table at the reception, along with a number of fun-colored gel pens, and gave people free reign. They assembled the book after the honeymoon.

Mary: I don’t know any good DJs, but I can recommend a cover band. Email me if you’re interested.

m- at my wedding, we will have what we are calling “wedding jars”. basically they are 6 vases with narrow tops that represent different stages that our relationship will go through. we will ask people to put advice, words of encouragement, quotes or prayers for a certain stage of our marriage into the jars. we will open the “newlywed jar” on our honeymoon, and then the rest of the jars we will save to open when we reach that stage.
There is also a deeper spiritual meaning to this– the jars represent the 6 jars of water that Jesus turned into wine at a wedding for His first miracle, but the idea would work just as well if you chose not to add that if you are not christian/religious.
