Choices…

March 28th, 2007 @ 11:55 am by Mrs. Emerald

Where do I put my money? With some fudging around, I have about $2000 to $2300 in my budget to play around with. What are my priorities, what are my choices?

Lighting: From the start, I knew that lighting was an absolute must for me. Depending on who I go with, and what I choose, I could get basic amber ambiance lighting for maybe around $500, or something more elaborate if I wanted to drop around $1000…

Fabric: Then I decided, ooohhhhh, fabric draping along the wall would look AMAZING! But at $25/foot, and with 60+ feet to cover, that’s a minimum of $1500 right there! My fabric-covered wall dreams are starting to look less and less reasonable. bummed02

Videography: Initially videography was not a priority for me. My impression of the wedding videography genre as a whole was that it was just plain cheesy. But I did want someone to record the day, so I was thinking of going the Craigslist route, or having a very basic videographer without all the bells and whistles (I actually have a candidate who fits the bill for this). But THEN, last week when Weddingbee posted Rhea and Tim’s Real Wedding and the link to their incredible wedding video, I watched it and freakin’ bawled my eyes out! And I don’t even know them! That’s when I realized that when done right, a wedding video can be more than the cheesy music, slow motion and blurry “romantic” shots. I want to bawl when I watch my own video too! But man, oh man, is it expensive. The videographers that are halfway decent, don’t have the home-movie look, and have decent editing skills are $2000 and up. There goes my budget.

So, do I:

Oh yea, I must have some sort of lighting, so I have to at least put $500-ish there…

Disclaimer: I have a feeling I may get some flack for “wasting” money on these unneccessary extras, but to each their own, right? :)

But what the heck do you do with a wedding video? I don’t understand. Who’s going to watch it? I can’t imagine that it’s going to see the light of day more than once.
I’d rather throw another few hundred at the photographer for additional pics or help and then decorate like crazy!

to go out on a limb… I say choose what’s more important to you - the now (having an amazing looking space for the reception), or the later (having a fab video memento), and put ALL the money into that. I feel like both run the risk of looking cheesy if done only halfway - especially the wedding video!

We aren’t doing a video because a) we would never watch it, and b) we couldn’t afford someone good anyways. I’m focusing on the decorations so that the pictures (our big splurge) will look amazing!

good luck choosing!

You will have the video for ever, that imo is a great place to put your money.

i wasn’t going to get a video cause all the ones i had seen were such dinky quality for lotso money - until i found our videographer - joesimonproductions.com. i changed my mind, thank goodness. i can’t imagine not having our fantastic video. i love that we get to relive our ceremony & reception through the video and hear our words and those of the priest. priceless, really.

video! i don’t know that many people, granted :), but i’ve never talked to someone who regretted doing a wedding video. in fact, more than one couple has told me that they watch it every year on their anniversary. besides, your parents, gp, etc, aren’t going to be around forever and wouldn’t it be nice to have their voice and their smiles on film during a joyous occasion? when else is everyone going to be together like this?

I think basic videography and awesome decor is the way to go. You’ll have something you and your closest friends can watch, and leave your guests with a lasting impression of your reception!

Video! A video is about capturing motion and sound more than images. You may not watch it much in the beginning but over time it does become something you care about. My mom got married 35 years ago and she is still upset about the fact that her wedding wasnt filmed. Still upset. It’s a bit of a sad note, but my parents wont be here forever and the ability to hear my father’s voice, see the way my mother walks (struts, really), watch the very goofy way my FIL dances are all the reasons we got a video. Hearing your vows, seeing your first dance, they cant be captured with photos no matter how great the pictures are. And I cant wait to show my future nieces and nephews the way their father, my brother, boogied down at my wedding. He totally stole the show!

I’ve heard a million times that you can skimp in many areas of the budget but photos and video are not the place to do this, because the photos and video are all you have left after the big day is over. And I have doubts that you can get a great videographer for $1500, but if you want a video, I think you should spend at least that much on video.

I would put more money into the videographer instead of the decorations for the same reason many have said: the video will last long after the wedding, the decorations are only there the day of. Another great thing you would be able to do with the video is someday show it to your children and grandchildren.

If I had any money to play with in my budget it would go toward either photography or straight to the honeymoon fund (upgrade to first class please!) I know those weren’t choices, but I thought I’d put my 2 cents in anyway. :)

i’d go with a video. sometimes the wedding day can be a bit of a blur and it would be nice to sit back and actually watch and experience what happened afterwards. to actually hear the speeches and people dancing and having a great time…you even get to see the moment you both lay eyes on each other again and again, and that’s always great. plus it would be a great thing to show your kids and grandkids.

To each their own is totally right! Some would spend 10,000 on flowers if they could so if you want to spend money on setting the mood or have the video to last forever, well then go for it!

I was iffy about getting one, but after my wedding I am very thankful I have it. Still pictures couldn’t have captured our personal vows, string quartet music arranged by my husband and performed by our friends, the way the flower girl ran down the aisle to give her future uncle a petal, my father-in-law’s touching speech, and an impromptu performance by our old a cappella group (where we met) - with us as the soloists (surprise!). It’ll be nice to have a “living” memento years from now…in that time, most people won’t remember how the lighting looked (or didn’t look). You may not miss the video if you don’t have it…but you probably won’t regret it if you do.

skip the fabric, do some minimal lighting and get as nice a videographer as you can. i didn’t get about a video because i look horrendous on film… but seeing so many beautiful highlight reels and videos like rhea’s…. i do regret it. i also wanted lighting, but in retrospect if i had to choose one over the other, i would go with the video. :) good luck!

definitely video. and get a good one. we had a terrible home movie video done, and though we rarely watch it, i know i would watch it more often if it had been done really beautifully (like so many videographers are doing these days!). and after bring married nearly four years and with children, i know i’ll love showing it to my kids down the line.

my husband and i had an amazing wedding sermon that made BOTH of us cry at the beauty of it. i love that we have it in its entirety to listen to if we need a little reminding on how to go about this marriage business when times get rough (which it will). so make sure if you do go this route that you get the ceremony recorded totally and then a beautifully edited summary of the day as a whole.

you won’t regret it.

omg, I just read that videographer thread! Wow, what a bunch of chip-on-their-shoulder whiners!! From the chick who “lost the fire to fight” to the guy who just “cashed the check to pay the rent,” I mean seriously, you want any of these people to be part of your wedding? I think their problem is this attitude of self-entitlement — “WE are important, you NEED us to film your wedding.” I remember this videographer who emailed me back after I asked if he charged for non-filming hours between ceremony and reception, and he replied that he does charge, but he does NOT charge for the time he spends unloading his equipment. He also discounted any opinions I had about what I wanted, based on HIS experience. Next to the DJ, I consider videographers to be one of the hardest vendors to distinguish between the ones who are in it because they love it, or the ones who are in it to just “pay the rent.” Let’s be honest here, ladies, most these videographers are film school rejects who are secretly pretending they are a famous director. Hence the whole whining and bitterness because you dared to put them in the same category as lighting.
