Mrs. Lemon's Picture
Mrs. Lemon, Los Angeles/Monterey Age and Occupation in 2006: 26, Graduate Student (Public Policy) Fiance's Age and Occupation in 2006: 29, Environmental Consultant Engagement Date: April 7, 2006 Wedding Date: July 7, 2007 Venue: Rosary Chapel & Monterey Marriott, Monterey, CA About Me: My FI and I met online, but we like to tell people that we met at a "cookie shop" which is the technical location of our first encounter. He proposed exactly 1 year, 1 month and 6 days after our first date (it's the only part of his proposal speech that I remember), and we're planning long-distance from Los Angeles for a July wedding in my hometown of Monterey, CA. I have a passion for all things "cool, cute and quirky" and I enjoy video games, reading blogs (WeddingBee, trashy celeb, consumer & political) and crafting in my spare time, if I have any!
About Mrs. Lemon

My mom is one of the best shoppers I know, but she’s always out looking for something for everyone BUT herself. I’ve been scouring Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdale’s in LA to no avail, and she’s been vigilantly checking the web and magazines for anything she might like. A few outfits were shipped home, but nothing passed “the test” and we were still at ground zero.

So while I was home this week, we took a side trip up to San Jose on Monday to go shopping for her wedding outfit. Things seemed to come up empty, until we happened upon the ridiculously extensive special occasion section at Macy’s, and actually came away with 4 dresses that she really liked. We narrowed the selection down to two, swiped the Macy’s card and took them home to see if Dad could help narrow the selection process… or rather if she could make her final choice. Both looked great on her, and neither made her feel “matronly” … which was her main fear of most “Mother of the Bride” outfits that she found.

Here’s what she narrowed it down to:

1) Tadashi tiered dress, Navy

2) Calvin Klein, Nude

The CK dress is currently the front runner, as long as we can get it alter the v-neck to make it a bit less revealing and find a shawl or something to cover up her shoulders. But that’s easy to do… now that we’ve got TWO outfits to work with!

I LOVE #1! I think it’s very glam and appropriate for a MOB who doesn’t want to seem overly matronly, etc!

I vote for the CK dress. I’m not a fan of the big layers from the first dress - it can add unwanted girth.

Your mom must be in awesome shape to have such sexy non-matronly dresses to choose from! : )

Without knowing your mom’s coloring or personal style, it’s hard to opine, but for me…. I’m not into “beige” as a general rule (ZZZZZZZ and not typically flattering except on the very pale or very dark, and the undertone — from gray to green to orange — can be hard to pin down), and shiny doesn’t always photograph well, so I’d go with the navy one (which would look great with silver shoes & purse). Plus that skirt will be easy to walk in and super-fun to dance in. The hemline will really show off her shoes.

I vote for #2. I’m not a fan of those layers on #1 either. The second dress looks very elegant.

I love both! Though, I’m not really feeling the navy blue (that’s just a personal opinion, I don’t like navy clothes in general, but it probably looks great on your mom, you never know). You mom must be stunning in order to pull off those dresses! Nice finds!

Damn! Your mom must be hot!! Make her wear an ugly dress. it is her job. I agree with L on the Navy.

I am a lot older than you, but when we were little we were always surprised when an attractive woman was a mother and say, “She’s a PRETTY mommy.”

I love the CK dress. The layers aren’t so great, even on the model. The CK one is more elegant, but not matronly

I don’t like #1, looks like a flamenco dress, not a MOB dress. 2nd dress is lovely.
