Beehive

March 31st, 2007 @ 12:03 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. Bella wants to know where she can get her shoes and her bm’s shoes dyed in NYC.
  2. heyjanety wants to know where she can get cute hair accessories for her two flower girls ages 1 and 3. Preferably a headband, but clips are ok too. Any suggestions?
  3. helene’s fiance only likes ice cream cakes, so she wants to surprise him with an ice cream grooms cake but isn’t sure about the practicality since it’ll melt. Any suggestions?
  4. fishgal wants to know the one thing on your registry you had to have? How did you know what brand of kitchen appliance to register for and whether it was good?
  5. tipperella wants to know what questions she should ask to the past bride references given by wedding planners.
  6. Hishtafel wants to put fun facts or trivia about the bride and groom on her personalized napkins. Any suggestions?
  7. Birdcage Seeker is looking for a place that sells birdcage veils with some sort of decoration.
  8. Bridetobe’s bm found out she’s pregnant and due 2 days before the wedding. Is she still expected to take the responsibilities of being a bm now that she won’t be in the wedding?
  9. Becky is looking for great ideas for unique diy thank yous besides the knottie thank you photo.
  10. diywannabee wants to know if anyone every took the papersource workshop “Before I Say I Do” and whether you thought it was worthwhile.”
  11. FlowerPetalObsessed is wondering if anyone has used Fly Boy Naturals for petals, if it was cheaper than using your florist, and how the quality was.
  12. Jhong Ren wants to know that the schedule for a typical American wedding is.
  13. glass wants to know how you transition from dance to dance. Do you do them all at once (father-daughter, mother-son etc.), or at different times? She’s thinking of just doing the first verse of each song so the guests don’t have to watch 15 min of dancing.

1) Bella - Miss Lily posed this question recently and there were quite a few answers here: http://www.weddingbee.com/2007/03/22/dying-my-feets/

Helene - I had an ice cream cake at my wedding.. no comments about dry wedding cake LOL
I got married in Vermont so I had Ben & Jerry’s do it. But any local B&J should be able to do it. I had no problems with melting as they use a deep freezer to keep their ice cream cold. The deep freezer freezes at a lower temp than a home freezer, thus making the “cake” rock hard. I think it was out during dinner, so by the time it came to cutting, the cake had thawed so that it could be cut.

4. One thing on your registry you had to have? KitchenAid appliances are great and can be found in Department Stores–my mom has their blender and I have the infamous mixer (a must-have on 90% of bridal registries, I’d say). I didn’t have one major thing, although I am quiet excited about the toaster over. ;-) I think you need to think about what you really need and desire–the mixer and baking materials are big for me because I love to bake. We also registered for amazing pots and pans–Calphalon–which FI is excited about since he doesn’t most the dinner cooking.

6. Any suggestions?
Where did the B&G meet?
When did the B&G meet?
The B&G’s favorite vacation spot?
When was the B&G’s first kiss? (This may or may not feel appropriate to you)
B&G’s first movie they saw on a date?

8. Is she still expected to take the responsibilities of being a bm now that she won’t be in the wedding? I would leave it up to her. Say, I know this is a special time for you, too, and I want to make sure you’re as involved as you can be. Maybe ask your MOH to follow through–kindly–and ask the preggy BM if she wants to be included in the shower, BP, etc. plans. I would be prepared to hear “well, since I can’t be there and I’ll be so pregnant, I don’t think so” or “of course, if I wasn’t pregnant I would be there anyway!!!” :-)

9. DIY thank yous besides the knottie thank you photo. I’m kind of over that one, too! I am planning on doing a photo collage of pics from the wedding (a bee did this recently) and making that the “cover” and printing cards at Shutterfly or ANapfish or something. I know it’s nothing out there, but still nice and visual.

Helene - the best way to find out if it’s feasible is to talk to your reception hall and see if they have a freezer available for your use. Talk to them about the logistics because they’re the ones who will know what they are and aren’t capable of doing :)

Bridetobe - tell her she’s welcome to everything that she would have gone to (shopping, showers, parties, etc) but that if she’s busy with baby stuff or just not feeling up to it then she’s under no obligation. That way, she gets to decide what she feels up to doing without feeling guilty for bailing last-minute. If you asked her now so early in her pregnancy of course she’d want to still be involved in everything - but she won’t have any way of knowing that 7 months from now she won’t feel up to it, so take it one event at a time but make sure to always at least invite her.

12. jhong, typically weddings last around 5 hours including the ceremony and reception.

some brides and grooms take pictures before the ceremony which may be another couple of hours, and it also takes a couple of hours to get hair and makeup done for the wedding party.

4. fishgal - i research everything on amazon and read reviews because different brands are better for different things. the one thing i wanted the most was my all clad cookware and global knives because i knew i’d use them forever. :)

5. tipperella - i believe my planners provided me with 5 references and i contacted all of them. i simply asked how they would rate the overall service, organization, control/being on top of the big day, and the scope of the services they provided (did they provide vendor referrals? did they pick up the favors/programs etc. the night before? when did they arrive/leave?) everyone i spoke to had glowing reviews, so be sure to talk to at least 3 past brides.

6. hishtafel - we did something like that on our newsletters but included fun facts about our entire wedding party, like “did you know the bride and groom met through her blog?” “did you know groomsman x and the groom were college roomates?” these were left on each chair during the reception.

i’m not sure the costs involved with printing all kinds of questions on napkins, so maybe something like an inexpensive diy newsletter will work just as well. good luck!

flowerpetalobsessed - miss bop did a great review of fly boy and glad tidings here: http://www.weddingbee.com/2006/10/03/freeze-dried-petals/

and miss caterpillar also ordered from fly boy here: http://www.weddingbee.com/2006/08/22/petals-petals-everywhere/

7. birdcage seeker - erica koesler has gorgeous veils. this one has swarovski crytals, but not sure if its what you’re looking for: http://www.ericakoesler.com/catalog2007s/veils/new07/pages/695_jpg.htm

8. bride-to-be - i think you should talk to your bm and ask her what she’d like to do. as it leads up to your wedding, she’ll probably be very busy preparing for the baby. at the same time you don’t want her to feel excluded. maybe she can be an honorary bridesmaid? :)

How do you transition from one dance to the other? (ex. From the first dance to the father-daughter dance and mother-son dance) Do you do all of them at one time, therefore needing some kind of “transitioning”, or is it done at different times? I’m thinking of just dancing to the first verse of each song (just so the guests don’t have to sit there and watch 15 minutes of us dancing). But if each dance comes right after the other isn’t it going to be really weird?

Fishgal - i did my research on consumerreports.org They have ratings of appliances, how they performed and what they thought was the best one.

12. Glass - I think we are going to do our first dance immediately after being announced and entering the reception area. Then we are going to eat and then do the parent/child dances back to back. That way, it’s not three in a row, and the two similar ones are done together. I think we might break it up and do the cake cutting before we open the dance floor to everyone, but that depends on how long it takes people to eat (don’t want to be cutting/serving the first of the cake while the last people through the buffet are still eating their meals).

One thing you might want to think about if you’re really worried about boring your guests is combining your FD dance with his MS dance. That way, there’s no awkward cut-off in the middle of the song, but guests aren’t bored out of their minds. Honestly though, I loved watching those dances at weddings I’ve been to, because there’s something special between a parent and child and you can see it while they dance together. Not having both of those dances, each by themselves, would make me feel like I missed out on something so beautiful (and honestly, what’s a few minutes time?)

We used Flyboy Naturals Freeze Dried Petals because of the quality and they had the exact color we were looking for. Prices were very reasonable compared to others and they were wonderful to work with. We had our petals within the week!! Also, Jami has lots of great ideas for weddings too!! She’s the one we talked to.

FlowerPetalObsessed - i was VERY happy with Petal Garden’s petals. The color/size/quality was excellent. they looked great in pictures and you couldn’t tell they weren’t fresh rose petals. and yes, they were much cheaper than the fresh petals from the florist.

I may have our DJ do the music for the ceremony. Any ideas for fun songs (not classical) that i can use for when family walks in, when the bridesmaids walk in and when i walk down the aisle? also when we walk back down the aisle after the ceremony is over?

Just a tip for all you DIY brides: I had been battling with my home printer making inserts for our invitations. The little 4-bar cards I got from paper source kept jamming and it was a huge disaster. So, my fiance and I ventured out to Best Buy and got the most glorious new printer–Epson Stylus Photo RX580. It is specifically designed to handle small paper (since its a photo printer.) Just thought I’d share incase anyone else was facing a similar technological barrier to creating the perfect invitations!

Has anyone found any good websites that have sample text for wedding invitations? I’m DIY-ing the invitiations for my not-so-traditional destination wedding and looking for ideas with the wording.

Thanks,
