Do The Bustle

April 2nd, 2007 @ 3:00 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

One of the most exciting thing about this wedding is having a bustle. I love bustles. They look SO COOL. So, when I ordered my dress, I was already imagining the bustle I could have. I thought about having to do it at the shop, but I wasn’t comfortable with it - I’m not quite sure why. But it doesn’t matter, because my FMIL has a friend who actually alters and designs wedding dresses! She does it for a living and loves my FMIL, so she will do my bustle and alterations for me as well.

Now, I just need to settle on the type of bustle I want for my semi-cathedral train. Here is the back of my dress, I’m not quite sure you can see the design on the train, but I want that to be visible with the bustle done.

Two of my options are overbustles. These are one point overbustles :

Other options are the many pointed underbustles:
Fifteen points (I think),

and another with many points that aren’t listed.

These dresses have a ton of points, but of course, it doesn’t list how many!

And lastly, my favorite bustle/dress ever.

I like how this dress has box pleats, since mine does, too. As with the others I’ve found in the Bustlebio2, the descriptions are a little hard to place with the dress.

How are you going to do your dress bustle? Are they doing it at the shop, or are you taking it somewhere else?

I have a similar bustle to the one on the very bottom..if you’d like I can send you a picture :)

i had an overbustle because i had a lot of intricate beading on the train, and a french bustle wouldn’t work. be sure you have someone who goes with you and learns how to do it correctly - it can actually be quite difficult!

The first overbustle is really pretty, especially with the beading on your dress. I was also in love with a ‘whipped cream’ (i.e. many point) bustle but on your big day you’ll be surprised how even an ‘easy’ bustle will confuse your bridesmaids, wedding coordinator, etc. I ended up a three point bustle and it was the only time all day that we went off schedule as it took three times longer than expected to get it right (even with matching colored strings, etc.).

i am having a french bustle (aka underbustle) because mine is a mermaid and i like the clean lines i get from the underbustle better.

Just a note…. My friend has the exact same dress and wore it at her wedding last weekend. It actually came with a bustle already to button and go…. 2 point under bustle. May be something to think about esp if you decide on an underbustle. They may be able to work with what is already there.

I can’t wait to have a bustle either. You’re favorite bustle is very pretty. It should go well with your design.

I agree 100% with vtjill.

Easy bustling is a good thing, come wedding day!

Do all Casablancas come with a bustle apparatus? (If that’s the word?) My gown is a similar Casablanca, arriving in a few weeks, and I’ve been worrying about the exact same thing. I want as simple as possible, but I want the beading on the train visible, so I was thinking of an overbustle. But is a one-point bustle more likely to break? I hear a lot about bustles breaking during dancing. Maybe I’ll email Casablanca, they’ve been very nice when I have in the past…

BTW, I’ve said it before, but I love your gown, Miss Kiwi!

Yay! My gown *does* come with an underbustle that shows off the beading on the train. I wrote to Casablanca and they got back to me within an hour. Great service. They also promised me that my dress would arrive on time (panicking bride as time runs short.) Now I don’t have to pay for one or get my mom to do one. My mom is a wonderful seamstress, but she’s never made a bustle before, and I know she’d be nervous that she’d ruin my wedding gown.

I’m in love with the bustle shown here, unfortunately, I don’t think it will work with my dress which doesn’t have the waistband.
