Six/Weird Random Things About Me

April 2nd, 2007 @ 11:17 am by Mrs. Pearl

1. I was on Teen Jeopardy when I was in high school. Yes, the real one on TV. No, I didn’t win… but I came close (2nd place). I used to get fan mail from all over the country from this… people have a strange love for Jeopardy. And when I went to college orientation that summer, some kid swore he knew me (we’d never met), then once we got on the elevator, he goes “YOU WERE ON TEEN JEOPARDY!!!” loud enough for everyone to hear. Fun times.

2. I can raise one eyebrow, like The Rock. I read about it when I was a kid and thought it would be a neat trick. Sooooo… I trained myself to do it. I’d sit in front of the mirror and raise my eyebrows while holding one down. Kinda weird in theory, but it worked. :)

3. I’ve read Gone With the Wind (and its sequel Scarlett) more than 30 times. It’s my favorite story.

4. I was my high school’s mascot. We were the Vikings. I’ve never seen a black Viking before… but it was cool nonetheless.

5. I have a freakish aversion to people touching my back or neck. It really makes me freak out a little bit.

6. I’m multiracial, with my mom descending from various European ethnic groups and part Puerto Rican. My dad’s side is black and Native American (they thought). I just found out last weekend that we’re not part Native American, we’re part Chinese.

Miss Poppy says:

I LOVE THIS!!!!! i would have written you fan mail as well :) although you might get a bunch from weddingbee ;) i love that you’re from so many different heritages, so many cultures - which ones do you identify with the most?

i trained myself to do the one eyebrow thing too! when i was little, my mom used to send me to bed so early i’d be bored, so to fill in the time, i practiced raising only one eyebrow. i also taught myself to flip my eyelids inside out - that one’s a bit gross.

in high school, i wanted nothing more than to be on family feud. that is so cool that you were on teen jeopardy, you’re a smarty! strangely, i share some of your weird traits (2 and 5)!

haha, i have the same aversion to people touching my hair. i don’t know why people are so fascinated by mixed kids hair but they’re just drawn to it. my guy friends like to make a game out of who can touch my hair first. sometimes i really hate boys. lol.

I see there’s lots of Jeopardy love here, too :)

Miss Poppy: Though I look black to most people (which yeah, I am pretty much half), I really identify more with my mom’s side of the family (white) because I grew up with them and not so much with my dad’s side. But it bugs me like no other when my students say that I “talk white” because really, what does that mean? One said that it was “talking white” because I sounded really intelligent. We had a serious talk that day.

Annie: I LOOOOOOOOVE Family Feud. I’d be so good at that show. Definitely the second person up in the Final Feud :)

Tea: Isn’t it weird how your hair gets pet like it’s a small animal or something. And the comments people feel free to make…”Is that your real hair?” I’ve taken to pulling my own hair to show them it’s all natural just so they won’t touch, poke, or otherwise try to search for tracks. Yes, it’s happened before!

omg… i can do a seriously mean rock eye brow too.. AND i read GWTW and Scarlett four bajillion times too!! i didn’t know there was another GWTW/Scarlette fan out there. I first read it in 3rd grade and wanted to grow up to be Scarlett with her green eyes and black hair before i realized a few years later that the chance of a korean girl “becoming” scarlett was … pretty darn slim. :T

WeezerMonkey says:

You’re like…Tiger Woods! ;)

9.
Miss Pearl says:

I’m like Tiger Woods’ broke cousin…Liger Woods.

H: So funny! I first read GWTW in the 5th grade and my 6th grade teacher bought me Scarlett (after seeing my already-tattered copy of GWTW). I, too, wanted to be Scarlett. Too bad during that time, I would have been more like Mammy. Ahhh, to be young and innocent.
