Diana: A Celebration

April 3rd, 2007 @ 9:33 am by Mrs. Snow Pea

From now until June 10th, Cleveland’s Western Reserve Historical Society is hosting “Diana, A Celebration” to honor the life of the late Princess Diana. The exhibit will feature 150 personal objects including her wedding gown. Mr. Snow Pea and I are planning to see it in May. Even my mother loves Princess Diana and I remember seeing the images of her wedding on tv as she rode by in her glass coach engulfed by silk and tulle.

Miss snow pea,

Are you in Cleveland too? I think I’ve seen it before but in London. The clothing doesn’t look as impressive in display as in photos and on TV. I guess it depends on who wears it and I like Diana (she’s much more admirable than Jackie)

hehe…I did a school report on the royal wedding. Looking back, I can’t imagine what scholastic goals this achieved, but I remember liking the cool clothes.

(Now, of course, I shudder at that dress and poor Princess Di, whose dress definitely wore her instead of the other way ’round)

Nicely said, CS! — “poor Princess Di, whose dress definitely wore her instead of the other way ’round”

I remember how she was hiding behind her hair. And she was only 19! So insanely young and dealing with so much. 1981 seems like an era ago. Today Royal weddings emphasize the womens’ careers and pre-existing lives. Big change!

I saw some of her gowns in London and was struck by how large a woman she must have been. She came across as very vulnerable and almost delicate, but when you see her clothes, you realize she was close to six feet tall, and by no means rail-thin. I don’t mean that in a mean way–I was just very surprised by it.

My neighbor gave me a copy of the book about designing her wedding dress (written by the designers). It was an interesting perspective. To us, her look is dated, but the book explains that it was a unique bridal look at the time. She chose virtually unknown fashion designers who had just graduated from school. They had introduced the romantic, Victorian (read: puffy sleeves and fluffy collars) look of the early 80s, and Diana liked it.

The details of the gown were also pretty incredible: antique lace, mountains of silk, pearls and beads. Also interesting: the commission, including her attendants’ attire, cost about 50,000 pounds.

I’ve seen her home in London along with some memorabilia dresses she’s worn and also a room full of photo’s of her. She was beautiful.

Hey - that’s where my reception will be in Oct! The dresses go away and the vintage cars come back out. Such a cool museum.

I saw the exhibit in London also.
