About Beehive

Beehive

April 5th, 2007 @ 4:36 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. ivy wants to know if she needs to include anything besides the invite, rsvp, directions, and hotel info in her invitations. She’d also like sample hotel wording suggestions. She’s hosting the wedding with her fiance, but wants to include their parents’ names. Is it weird to put their names first, then add “Together with their parents Mr. & Mrs. and Mr. & Mrs.?”
  2. Jennifer wants to know if anyone has had trouble sending metallic envelopes in the mail? She’s worried the slippery surface might cause problems when stamping them.
  3. Danielle is looking for a dance instructor/studio recommendation in NYC.
  4. melodiouscarol wants to know where she can rent an old car (like in Titanic’s sex scene). She’d love to use it as a getaway car.
  5. Chrissie wants to know if anyone has changed their name to Myfirst Hislast Mylast? She’s considering doing this and is wondering how the process works.
  6. Donna wants to know how hard it is to change both your middle and last name. Her middle name nad her fiance’s last name combined create a phrase in Tagalog she’d rather avoid (breast). ;)

ivy - that’s pretty much what we included. if your venue is in a hard to find area, a map might also be nice.

as far as the wording, i have seen it where your names are first followed by “together with their parents,” but without the full names spelled out. that seems a little cleaner, simpler to me, but i think it’s ok your way as well if you’d like to include their names.

good luck!

Donna - you can always use Yourfirst Yourlast Hislast. All you have to do is change it on all your legal documents (SS card, drivers liscense, etc). Its pretty normal to do that.

ivy-
My parents are divorced and I didn’t want to get into detail with who’s doing what on my invitations so I just did this:

Jane Doe & John Smith
together with their parents
cordially invite you…

danielle, I have been taking lessons at Fred Astaire dance studio on E 42nd street. We take with a girl named Gabrielle, she’s young and totally awesome, and a good friend. Let me know if you need her info.

Thanks, Emily…
Problem is - my middle name IS his last name and my last name IS his mom’s maiden name (yes, we went through DNA testing to make sure that we’re not related) and the combination of
my middle name, my last name, and his last name creates another ‘bad’ phrase in Chinese. (It’s worse than the first one)

Donna - When I changed my name I added my husband’s last so I am now:

FIRST (MIDDLE MAIDEN) MARRIED

The (MIDDLE MAIDEN) is my “legal” middle name now. So, I have two middle names and one last name. I guess I’m trying to illustrate that you can change your middle name at the Social Security office. They let me!

You don’t have to have a middle name… maybe that would solve your problem. Just eliminate it when you fill out your social security application.

You could be: FIRST MARRIED

Hope that helps!

Ivy, I’m probably gonna do something like:
Jane Doe,
daughter of Sally Doe & Harry Doe,

and John Smith,
son of Jill Smith and Jack Smith,

invite you to blah blah blah.

Just another option to consider =)

donna, i don’t have any experience but i don’t think its too much harder. my friend changed her middle name and last name when she got married with minimal fuss. i think it’s the same as changing your last name [she made her maiden name her new middle name]

ooh - thanks, everyone!! :)
I’m going with
Donna [confirmation name] [married name]
(so really - it looks like my name right now minus my soon to be maiden last name)

My turn for a question. We are thinking about doing a candy buffet, but I can’t really find a whole lot of information online. Has anyone here done one or planned one? How many guests did you have? Did you estimate how much candy you’d need based on the head count or something else? What types of candy did you use? Did you have any candy left at the end of the night, or do you wish you would have had more?

It’s something we (ok, I) would like to have, but since it’s very much not a necessity, I don’t really want to make it the main focus. I love the idea because it’s colorful for pictures, not to mention how fun/nostalgic it would be to get candies our guests had growing up, along with current favorites. But I’m afraid that in order to do it, I’m going to spend a fortune not only on the candy itself, but on jars and things to display it all with.

I should mention that we’re not doing favors. I thought about doing it as a dessert buffet instead of just candy, since brownies and cookies and bars are easier to display and cheaper to make/purchase, but it takes away both the colorfulness, and then kind of makes us paying for a cake pointless since that would be more dessert (we told our caterer no dessert since our cake would be enough). I hope that’s enough information. Thanks ladies!!

I have a question for the beehive. Does anyone know a place to purchase international stamps (Australia, London & Hong Kong) in the US? Preferably NYC? I need them for our RSVP envelopes. Thanks!

Question for beehive: What’s the best way to travel with your wedding dress on the plane? Do I use garmet bag or box? Does it need to be pressed/steamed again? Thanks!!

New beehive question: what are some good games or toys or activities for the kids’ table, when most of the kids are 7 and up? Coloring is a bit young for them. Card games? Puzzle books for the right age group? Silly putty? Anything else? Help! We have a lot of kids coming, and I don’t want them to be bored, and I want them to interact with each other, as this is the first time some of them will meet.

Danielle - I’m sure that there are several places, but randomly the gift shop at the Hotel Belleclaire sells international stamps… You may want to call first.

It’s located on 72nd (maybe? I don’t remember the street exactly, but it’s sort of across from Ruby Foos) on the upper west side, close to the Natural History Museum

Jennifer,
I used pink metallic envelopes to send my invitations and I didn’t have any problems with them. The surface is a little more slippery but the stamps stayed on just fine.

Looking for suggestions on what types of paper to use in my invitations. I’ve seen some People use LUXE, stardream, etc. What do you all recommend?
