Mother-In-Law

April 5th, 2007 @ 4:52 pm by Mrs. Butterfly

Ok. Let’s be candid about this. How many of you like your mother-in-law (MIL)? Anyone? Anyone?

I’m just kidding. I know there are plenty of you who get along fabulously with your MIL. For the rest of you, I found a hilarious blog called MILDEW (Mothers In Law Do Everything Wrong). laughin They’ve recently moved to another site (click here), but all of their old stuff is on the MILDEW site. I have been laughing my ass off for the last hour reading this stuff (I should be working…. oh well).

Enjoy!

my MIL is the complete opposite of my mom… my mom is strict, stubborn, critical, traditional, and tense. my MIL is liberal, wishy-washy, loves everyone, wacky, and laid back. so while each has their idiosyncrasies, i love them both and it’s a great balance having both extremes.

I love my FMIL. She is the complete opposite of my mom. My mother is into high end fashion (she used a Gucci bag as my diaper bag!), very critical…rarely gives me a compliment, loves to eat good food, and has a ton of friends. On the other hand, my FMIL is like Martha Stewart meets Home Improvement…she is a perfectionist who isn’t really into fashion but loves to garden, paint, and buy furniture and accessories. She’s super sweet and has a few close friends. I love them both though.

Thank God that I get along with my BF’s parents. I must be super lucky. I will always remember the first time I heard his dad crying while praying for me. (He’s rather emotional, and cries just about every time he prays, but it still meant a lot.)

Thak you for this site! I will have a read through it to prepare myself for the long weekend away at the future in-laws’ house…

And in answer to the question - I get along with my FMIL okay, but she’s not someone I would make an effort to maintain a relationship with if she wasn’t related to my fiance. We are very very different people with different values. She has a lot of weird idiosyncrasies that drive me nuts, but at the end of the day, she’s a good person and she’s always nice to me, so I’d say we have a decent but not close relationship. I could have it much, much worse, so it’s all good :)

It took me awhile to figure my MIL out, but we have a great relationship. Sometimes we don’t see eye to eye, but I adore her. And she raised my FH into the great man that he is, so that’s a bonus :)

I don’t like my FMIL much - she’s an overdemanding control freak, and she’s been trying to control every aspect of our wedding since day 1, although my family is paying for the wedding! She’s super nice to my FH’s sister-in-law (who’s one of the sweetest people I know), but always complains about her behind her back saying how she’s not good enough for her son. Based on this, I’m pretty sure she complains about me too (she’s nice to me in person too).

OMG — Thank you. I’ve spent the last hour reading aloud to my FI and he’s addicted. We stretch every night before we go to bed and he started without me and said…”aww…keep reading!” Too funny.

I love my FMIL… FFIL was the tough one. Although today, my BF told me that his dad threatened to throw him out of the house if he ever hurt me, though. I guess I had underestimated him. :)

My mum is dependent, dramatic, prone to tantrums but very interested and enthusiastic about ‘your wedding in my garden’ - we’re not engaged nor have we said that we *would* do it there when the time comes. My boyf’s mum is interesting, interested, calm, sweet and jokes about my personality without being mean. This cannot be said about my mum. Thank god my boyf’s parents are so amazing and I get on with them so well. They will be the calm to ride the inevitable storm of my parents when we finally get engaged. x

aww these stories made me really sad.

i used to hate my MIL bc she treated mr. spider so poorly. after she realized i wasn’t going away, she finally accepted me and now she’s always sugar and spice and everything nice to me.

thing is, now she loves to talk shit about BIL’s gf(s) with me. i know it’s wrong but i secretly enjoy it bc it took me a long time to get in her good graces and i’ll be damned if i ever lose it.

i haven’t met my mother in law yet. heh. but i am sure she will be a lovely lady. although since my fiance doesn’t really get along with her himself and they are actually currently slightly estranged, i guess my goal is more to be of a bandaid to their relationship than anything else. the wedding seems to be paving the way to some form of reconcilation and hopefully we are moving in the right direction.

It’s nice to read these stories and put my relationship with FMIL in perspective. We’re not each other’s favorite person in the world, but it’s not that bad! :)

My FMIL is one of the sweetest women ever! She’s so kind and loving and gets so excited when I tell her about wedding things :-) The only sad part is she gets really weepy about her eldest getting married… but I love her!!

My FMIL is great. Since my mother lives a few states away, my FMIL has been filling in for her and going to bridal shows and viewing potential locations with me. She sends me cute emails about bridal sales and cuts out articles for me.
