Beehive

April 6th, 2007 @ 4:10 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. kandaceandjason is thinking about doing a candy buffet but can’t find a lot of information about it online. Has anyone done or planned one? How many guests did you have? How did you estimate how much candy to buy? What types of candy did you buy? Was there enough candy, or do you wish you had more?
  2. melodiouscarol is looking for vintage car rental places in LA that have cars like the one in Titanic, but is open to other unique getaway car ideas too.
  3. Danielle is looking for a place to purchase international stamps (Australia, London & Hong Kong) in the US, preferably NYC for her RSVP envelopes.
  4. Pencils is looking for some good games, toys, or activities for the kids table. Most of the kids are 7 and up so coloring is a bit young. Card games? Puzzle books? Silly putty?

Pencils: There are lots of great puzzle books out there, aimed at a variety of ages. Feel free to email me [sander-at-toad-dot-net] for suggestions–that question’s right up my alley.

pencils -
how about getting some of those instant cameras that print little stickers? you could provide those to the kids along with colored pens and a blank journal and have them “help” you make a wedding album!
kids that age love to feel grown up and helpful =)

Pencils: My sister had stuff at the kids table for her wedding. I am doing the same stuff she did. She got a sand pail tub thing and put balls, games, etc in it. She got all the stuff at The Christmas Tree Shops out here in MA, so it was inexpensive. The kids had a blast. They had the most fun with the nerf football. They behaved well, and used them only outside.

I don’t know if you are having a cash bar or open bar, but the other thing she did for the kids was have an open soda/juice bar. That way they weren’t running to their parents constantly asking for $$. It is the one thing my nephew wants us to have at our wedding. ;)

Danielle, the whole international stamps process is somewhat complicated. I don’t even remember the exact procedures are but I opted not to do it. You can stop by your local post office to find out more info.

THat Model Magic stuff is pretty awesome, if I do say so myself. I think it’d be great for kids who know well enough to not put it on the floor and step on it, or anything like that. :)

I suggest a deck of cards, a few board games (quiet games, so don’t provide the cup for yahtzee) colored pencils and coloring books (you would be surprised at the interest in coloring even in older children, if you could borrow or find some handheld games, I’ve seen people do movies on a small tv or portable, play dough, if you have ever seen the mosaic coloring books, older kids love to color things like that or you can buy a really big fuzzy poster that they can all work on together, if you have any easy crafts (I dont know if anyone does those bead creatures anymore), game books such as crosswords and look and finds, and even mind type games. thats about all i got

Thanks guys, these are some great ideas! I had forgotten about the cameras with the stickers. And, don’t worry, it’s an open bar, and I’m thinking of having a special drink for the kids like a Shirley Temple. I know kids love having their own “grownup” drink.

Danielle,
I live in Canada and the stamp situation is complicated but what they were able to do for me at the Post Office was to give me sort of a certificate that my guests could take with them to the post office where they live to mail the reply card. I am not sure if this will work in the States but it’s something to try if you are unable to find any stamps.

Mrs. Ant’s wedding was beautiful… can she disclose where the location/resort was? I’m wondering if it’s within my budget. Feel free to email me directly if preferred.

Thanks!!

I am wondering if anyone has done a dessert only reception well, drinks too. I am thinking of having the wedding at 6:30-7pm and want to know if that would be an appropriate decision.

i’m only in high school but I love reading your site! I’m currently looking for prom dresses and as I was browsing Jessica McClintock’s website, I noticed a good amount of wedding dresses or dresses that wold work for a wedding. They seem pretty affordable too, so I was wondering why more brides don’t go down that line?

S - I definitely considered different avenues when looking at dresses. I don’t have hundreds (or thousands) of dollars to spend on a dress, so I would look at prom dresses and if I liked any of them, I would try to find them in white. Some I found were ok, but nothing really screamed “bride” at me.

I was wondering if anyone here knows how to achieve a silver or gold gilt edge on invitations or where to purchase those kind of cardstock for printing. Thank you.

Question for the Hive:

I am wondering what the “stages” of marriage are? It was mentioned in a comment on this beehive when someone asked about unique guestbook ideas like wishbowls. I love the idea of having different wishbowls where guests can leave advice for each stage of a marriage. I am just unsure what they are. Can anyone help please? Thanks! :)

kandaceandjason - Last month, I had a candy buffet at our reception. It went over really well, and I was incredibly pleased with everything. I averaged 1/4 pound per person attending, and we had plenty of candy left over. We had ~150 people attend. The overall favorite was chocolate covered almonds, and then, probably M&Ms. Also, all of the Lindt Lindor Truffle Balls were gone too! Pretty much anything chocolate went over well. I believe I have a photo of the set up if you’re interested. BTW, I got most of the candy from Bulkfoods.com. They were definitely the cheapest, and shipped VERY promptly.

Pencils - I found this great buy at the Dollar Tree. It was 4 little activity books (puzzles, word searches, etc.) of Disney characters (Everything from Cars to Princesses) that included stickers too–for $1. Talk about cheap, and they were a hit at our wedding to boot!
