About Mrs. Hibiscus

At the time of my last fitness entry, I was only 5 pounds away from my weight goal. I was excited. Currently, I have surpassed my weight goal by 1.4 pounds and I’m not feeling that same excitement. I’ve kept the same schedule: eating healthy on the weekdays, eating without guilt on the weekends and doing weights and cardio about 3-4 times a week. Apparently, this works. :) I’ve surpassed my goal with 3 months until my wedding, I feel healthy, and people have definitely noticed. I’ve lost a lot of weight. Twenty-five pounds to be exact. I’m at a very healthy weight for my height now.

Why am I not excited? Well, a couple of reasons actually. For starters, I still have huge arms. Genetics is killer. My Mom has huge arms for her size. I do weights and have been losing poundage but alas, my arms are still tanks. Please don’t humor me with the “I’m sure they look fine” comments because…. they are tanks. Second, I still have awful love handles. My stomach is flatter and I look good from the side, but my love handles will not go away. It’s so discouraging. I abhor them. And lastly, my saddest news (hence the title of my post), I’ve gone down two bra sizes. Yes, two. Two. So before you yell at me for not being excited about my tremendous fitness accomplishment, I must reiterate that I have lost major boobage yet my love handles and arms are not going anywhere soon.

Now, I’m wondering if I should keep losing weight in effort to lose the handles and the tanks or should I cut my losses and salvage my remaining cups? (haha… that was a funny sentence) I know this shouldn’t be a surprise. Boobage is fat. In trying to lose fat, you’ll naturally lose boobage. Duh Miss Hibiscus. Yes, but I didn’t realize how much had to be sacrificed. This is my dilemma.

How’s your weight loss going? Are you losing your twins? Any advice as to what I can do?

The love handles are the hardest part to lose. I heard somewhere that in order to lose it, you have to give up sugar - a sacrifice that I’m not capable of making.

hahahahaha. sorry, i know its not a funny topic, but you are very entertaining!

as for your problem. i think you should keep working out because in 3 months, you could lose the love handles and get smaller arms, therefore leaving you with twins which are an appropriate size for your new body! i would suggest doing a lot of push ups and chest presses to help keep the muscles near your boobage area - this helps them look bigger. =)

as for love handles - you have to do very targeted exercises to grow the muscles. then you have to do a ton of cardio to lose the fat on top of them. are you doing enough lower back exercises? also, i would definitely try pilates and yoga - they work differently that just cardio and weights because it focuses on lengthening your muscles and toning up your core. pilates would probably be great for your love handle problem. and yoga may help lean out your arms.

also, i would reduce the weight lifting and focus very much on cardio. you have to do cardio to lose the “layer of fat” around the muscles that you are building. that’s what my trainer told me.

good luck!

I would say just keep doing what you are doing. Gentics mess with us all in one way or another.

I have lost just over 40 lbs and my twins haven’t changed size one bit. To be honest it is frustrating since I am rockin the DD.

The arms… I know your pain. There is a trick I learned… the standing push up. Do 5 sets a day….throughout the day that is. When you just stand up from your desk, lean over and do a set of ten, when you are in the rest room, after you washed your hands, do another.

I understand how you feel. I have been losing weight and exercising, but my butt is still big! Damn genetics! I think my best advice is to hire a personal trainer for a couple of sessions who can really focus on your problem areas. Sometimes it’s just a matter of really targeting those areas and making sure you are doing the exercises properly.
Hmmmmm. I think I need to take my own advice.

Exercise, exercise, exercise….keeps the muscles tones. I lost 60 pounds in high school and had a little flabbyness, but I kept the weight lifting, yoga and hiking to build my muscles. I did go down a few bra sizes, but the pushups that yoga makes you do helped with the sags…good luck

maybe get a few sessions from a personal trainer. they can help you hone in on how to get rid of your trouble spots.

lat pull downs and assisted bar dips will help tone your arms, strengthen your back and firm your chest.

the 30 mins of running help me burn fat, but the chest exercises make a big difference.

I feel your pain!!!! I, too, suffer from fat arms. I’ve had a personal trainer to get ready for the wedding, and he’s done WONDERS.

The cardio is good, but do NOT stop the weights. Besides reducing your body fat, you have to keep building and toning that arm muscle–it’s the only thing that keep them from looking like puddles of flab!

I would say if you lose a few more pounds it will have an impact on your arms, which are what will really show in your wedding dress. It’s not like your boobs will disappear completely! There’s duct tape for that:P

with 3 months to go, i wouldn’t worry too much about losing more weight but worry about toning your arms instead because you don’t want to have to make massive alterations to your dress. you shouls actually gain a little bit of weight if your body has more muscle.

no! don’t give up the strength training! muscles are a huge plus in keeping your metabolism up which helps reduce fat, plus with the way a woman’s body is, I’m certain muscle bulk isn’t much of a factor in the size of your arms. Also, if you do both strength and cardio on the same day, do the strength first. I forget the correct terms, but the strength training will use up some somthing-somthing that will then make the cardio following it even more effective than the other way around!

I’d keep at the fitness. You’ve met and exceeded your weight loss goal, so you don’t need to be as focussed on the weight aspect, just keep working on maintaining what you’ve accomplished, and toning the problem areas. I second the suggestion to work on core strength. I’d also theorize that the cuppage loss has it’s limits, and if you keep things up, it will payoff in your arms and middle.

tone, tone, tone. like a few other readers said, that’ll help give you lean muscles. pilates and yoga and pilates are good for stuff like that because you won’t bulk up like you do with heavy weights but gives you the long, lean muscle look, which may help your arms [it's helped slim mine down and they were pretty big by my standards]. i love pilates and have started doing yoga and i noticed that the twisting and stuff has helped my love handles. they’re still there but not as there as they used to be. good luck!

Congrats on your awesome weight loss! I have not gotten anywhere in that respect =/ But yes, I have arm issues too, so I can relate… keep it up though, and I’m sure everyone will notice how fab you look on your wedding day!

UGH I hate my arms, I can totally relate Miss Hibiscus. I know it’s expensive and a little risky but I keep staring longingly at mesotherapy websites. My arms are big mostly because I have big biceps and then a good jiggle of fat underneath. My arms are the first thing I look at when pictures are taken of me.. :(

Your results are so encouraging! And that is a really good eating plan. I have the same problems with my arms and love handles. Here are my tips for getting rid of them significantly and keeping it that way:

1) Arms - if you have big arms like me, do not work on your triceps! They get more muscular and that just makes the problem worse. Instead, work on shoulders and biceps. Focus on toning these muscles to minimize the bulkiness of your triceps.

2) Love handles - cardio! How often do you run? You should finish off all your weight lifting with a good 20-30 run. I’ve found that this is the most effective way to trim off the inches from your waist. Trust me! Running is the best for love handles — even better than lifting, pilates, etc.

Hope this helps. And you still have 3 months, so chin up! : )

And don’t worry about your boobs!

I have the opposite problem… I’ve lost 15 pounds and gone from a D to a DD. I’d email you some of my excess if I could. At this rate I’ll be a size 6 and a FF.

Ditto previous posters on the pilates and yoga. My (limited) understanding is that weight training bulks up your surface muscles, while pilates strength training works on your lean inner muscles that pull everything in.

May I also suggest a NIA class if you can find one locally? It’s kinda an aerobics/dance/strength training combo. I’ve been going to one for about 6 months and I’ve noticed that I have much better tummy definition. Plus it’s a ton of fun.

25 lbs is AWESOME!

and i feel about the big arms thing. i’ve lost 15 lbs so far and my arms are the same. i too was disappointed, but well, what can you do about genetics.

you’ll look fab on your day regardless.

i lost boobage too. and i had very little to begin with so even with my weight loss i feel like i’m unproportional still since my boobs shrank. but that’s nothing that sewn in cups can’t remedy. =P

less cardio to keep your twins, and more weight lifting to lose your handles and your “tanks” as you put it.

but you know what? I have tanks, and my wedding dress still looks good on me :D so don’t stress about them!

I’ve been taking pilates for 3 months and it improves your posture and pulls everything in tight! Try to do it at least 3 days a week.

I have to disagree about not using your triceps… working out your triceps will tone the jiggle, not make it bigger. Congrats on your weight loss!

Thanks for the advice and support everyone. I guess I’ll cut the cardio down a little, try pilates and yoga and do lighter weights. :)

Mrs. Butterfly–How dare you take pleasure in my pain. haha jk don’t worry. I meant the post to be a little humorous. :) Thanks for the support.
