Wedding Colors Inspiration

April 7th, 2007 @ 4:19 pm by Mrs. Snow Pea

This weekend I watched Marie Antoinette with Kirsten Dunst and although the movie lacks a plot or storyline, I couldn’t help but feel re-inspired by the colors used in the movie.

I wanted to stay away from any “themes” for our wedding. ie. all hearts, pears, etc. Instead I was inspired by the Victorian Era, the Regency style dresses, and the French style of the Palace of Versailles with its silk satin fabrics, colors and ornate patterns. The color palette I had in mind was that of pinks, gold and that “vintage” blue. I have had a hard time finding just “the right blue” (ie. too Tiffany blue or too turqouise), and I am afraid my wedding will now look like a mish mosh of ideas. It’s time to regroup.

I even found Marie Antoinette Dinnerware Collection at Gracious Style.

That’s funny you say that. I picked my wedding colors — light teal, warm pink, ivory, and gold — a few months before I saw Marie Antoinette last year. Midway through the movie I leaned over to FI and said “Oh my God — I think we’re having a Marie Antoinette-themed wedding!” I love the entire look of that movie (obviously, since it matches my wedding!).

I really liked the movie although it left me hanging, too.

I think your wedding will be beautiful with that color scheme and I think it’ll be fine if you have a few different shades of blue–nothing’s more annoying than being TOO matchy-matchy in my opinion.

I love that movie and I love your idea!

Also just wanted to say that the book the movie is based on is really good and covers what happens when she leaves Versailles. I don’t like historical books but really enjoyed this one. It’s called Marie Antionette: A Journey

I loved the movie. It was a visual treat. It was short on story, but the images and music were great.

i haven’t watched this movie yet, but everyone keeps talking about how gorgeous the costume/set design was… so i think i’ll have to check it out. ;)

I have heard the book is great as well…and that’s what I mean by “it left me hanging” so it’s good to know I can read the book and find out more! :-)

Bee, it somewhat reminds me of the modern Baz Lurhman version of Romeo and Juliet–great costumes, sets, etc. and modern music. Definitely a treat for the eyes as bunny bride said.

Mrs. Bee, It’s available “on demand” if you have comcast cable.

If you like the decor of Versailles and the color schemes from Marie Antoinette, look into the Baroque and Rococo styles of art. Baroque is darker, heavier, and earlier than Rococo. Also, be careful not to confuse the French Rĩgence period with the English Regency period. They are about 100 years apart.

Another visually rich movie is Moulin Rouge — a totally different look.

we’re having this ‘theme’ for our wedding and am watching the film as we speak for inspiration. I love the colours and am having blue and pink invites made with a cameo in the middle printed in pink ink awith our initials. can’t wait! Picking flowers tomorrowand going for big roses and peonies on each table. Was also thinking about some subtle ostrich feathers with the flowers. My cake is going to be blue, pink and pastel green, lemon and strawberry sponge. I’m loving thinking of new things but am trying not to make it too themed and matching, will be very scattered. Thinking about pink champagne too! Have fun
