Live bands at a wedding were a new thing to me. In high school, a cool DJ was the most desired part of a Sweet Sixteen, was it not?
For Mr. Snow Pea’s birthday, we went to see Harry Connick Jr. in concert. He was amazing and his band was phenomenal! We love big band music and hearing them in person, so we knew a DJ couldn’t substitute the musical quality we were looking for. We compromised many things in order to book a live band for our wedding, but we’re so glad we did.
We looked into many bands including Slippery Band (who was booked), 747Orchestra, CTO World Entertainment, Chaser, and Ariel Entertainment. All of which are incredible bands and I personally highly recommend all of them. We went with EBE because they were recommended by Slippery Band (incredibly friendly service) and were willing to work within our budget.
EBE represents a variety of bands that work within a range of budgets that depend on the type of music you want. We went with their band Miami. All the bands represented by EBE have a big song list and vocal range so that they can do just about any type of music. We were specifically looking for the Frank Sinatra type feel. But Miami also had that “Latin flava” that we knew our friends would appreciate and love. EBE also has DJs and can do a band + DJ combo. In addition, we added an extra trumpet player and male vocalist to their existing 5 piece band. It was more cost effective to “build up.”
Are you having a band or a DJ?
Cool, looks like you’ll have great music!
We’re trying to decide between a DJ and DIY iPod music. Despite the fact that we’re considering DIY, music IS actually quite important to us, and the reason we’re considering DIY is because we would be in complete control of the playlist! We also don’t want a cheesy DJ trying to do the MC thing. And of course we can save a ton of money if we just use an iPod playlist. I am the one who wants the DJ though - my main concern is that if we do it ourselves, one of our friends will have to be “working” at the wedding to make sure the right music is playing at the right time and I don’t want to burden anyone with that. Having a DJ would just make it easier. I am sure with the mountains of recommendations we have, we could find an affordable one who’s not cheesy!
We’re not considering a band because a) I think they’re too loud, b) there is less selection available for songs since you’re limited to the songs they know and c) my fiance plays in a band and says if anyone plays at his wedding, he wants it to be him! And I don’t want him up onstage, I want him with me, so that was an easy decision.
