Beehive

April 10th, 2007 @ 5:20 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. EG wants to know if anyone is going to Kleinfeld’s Sample Sale today. Do you have any tips (does she need a whistle like that episode of Friends ;))?
  2. Knitsandsews wants to know if it’s ok for her bms to wear this champagne dress if she’s wearing a white dress? She’s afraid they might look too “bridal.”
  3. Jenny is trying to figure out how to decorate this room for her cocktail and appetizers reception. The ceilings are very high, draped fabric is too expensive, and getting lanterns hung is too difficult. The existing furniture will be moved out or covered. Any easy, inexpensive DIY suggestions to transform this into a classier venue?
  4. Jen is looking for someone who will do both hair and makeup in SF.
  5. Zandra is looking for a Spanish/English speaking officiant who will travel, and might be willing to incorporate some Catholic traditions for her wedding at Maggianos in downtown Chicago. Any suggestions for someone or where to look?

Knitsandsews - I don’t think they look too bridal, especially if you do a sash in your wedding color (and it’s something other than black, white, or silver) Plus, the dress isn’t floor length. I think you’re fine.

Jenny - is it a day or night reception? If night, I would bring in some floor lamps ($10 apiece at Walmart) but put pink bulbs in them so they cast a warm, rosy glow. If you are having any tables, I would focus on the linens and centerpieces. Don’t worry about anything more than about 7 feet from ground level. Potted plants in stands, and lattice panneling would also give you vertical aesthetic.

jenny… i would invest in some uplighting. if you don’t want to hire a lighting person perhaps your dj has something they can add to the room. a wash of color on the walls up to the nice vaulted ceilings would be much less expensive then draping fabric and would give an equally dramatic look.

knitsandsews: not too bridal at all! champagne and white is lovely.

jenny: if it’s at night, candles are your best friend! tons and tons of candles of various sizes all over would be gorgeous.

4. Jen, I copied this info from the Knot message board, so I haven’t really checked her out, but some knotties recommended Amelia from Beautyworks. She has a salon on the edge of Union Square and Nob Hill. I believe that she is $150 or $200 for the bride for both hair and make up (she uses Bobbi Brown and Dior).

knitsandsews-please don’t think that looks too bridal-y! The sash helps, too. One of my favorite knot weddings had the BM’s in white-white dresses, and their bright flowers completely helped set them off. Besides, the one walking downt he aisle in a glittery gown and veil will probably tip people off. ;-)

Just wanted to let you know that I went to the sample sale at Kleinfeld’s and bought a dress!! It was 54%. Alvina Valenta from the Fall 2005 collection. It was a sample but very clean, there was a small tear in the back but it is on the seam, also the only alteration is the hem…Therefore, I definitely reccommend going to the sample sale!

Does anyone know of any good locations in the San Francisco Peninsula to take wedding party and bride and groom pictures at? Originally we were thinking of going to the San Mateo Japanese Tea Garden, but they’re being renovated until later this year. Any ideas?

Can anyone recommend a good bra that offers push up and/or padding features? My wedding outfit is heavily embroidered and both outfits for my wedding day (Yes I have two!! My culture always has 2 functions) flatten my chest out considerably because of the weight of the embroidery and beading. I am looking for a good regular bra (with straps) and one good strapless bra, just to give me some shape.

I was wondering if anyone has made their own wedding cake toppers. I want to make ours out of sculpey. I believe that I can make them look great, but I’m afraid they will be to heavy and sink to the bottom of the cake. If anyone can help or know of a website I could refer to I would appreciate it!

Jenny: I don’t know how classy you think this is, but helium balloons can be really fun. Do a search for “certified balloon artists” to see some of the things they come up with.

Jen- I don’t know how much you want to spend but Maria Chang from Professional Makeup Artistry will do both and Taylor Pham. They are quite pricey though! I will be trying out a more affordable one this Sunday so I’ll reply back here and let you know afterwards!

A question for the hive:
I am going to be a bridesmaid in a wedding next month and I’m looking for a cute headband to wear (my hair ist too short for an updo, like the rest of the girls are getting). Any suggestions? The colors are brown and blue and we have brown bridesmaid dresses.

Judy, that would probably be a question for your cake maker. We used a Precious Moments figurine as our cake topper, and it was quite heavy. Our cake lady was prepared and added extra posts to the center of our cake to take the strain off and not crush the cake!

judy, my FI made our cake topper out of sculpey. our wedding is this saturday… so i can’t tell you how it held up yet. but i’ll repost after we get back from our trip and let you know. we did let our baker know that it was going to be a heavy topper and also the size of the base so that the top tier of the cake could be made to work with it. hope that helps. if you want to see pics of it… i have a journal on a san diego wedding site http://www.bridalinsider.com my screen name is qtfisch

I’m having 4 bridesmaids. I have 2 matching dresses that 2 of the girls adore. The other two, not so much. I’m not at all worried about all 4 dresses not matching. So, I’ll be choosing a different style dress for the other two. If the existing dress is black strapless with cream colored embroidered flowers along a bubble hem (by Tibi), what style should I look for in the other dress? Black strapless, same material? Pink/red strapless, same material?

Anyone know where you can get a cake box big enough for a wedding cake? Does anyone even make such things? My mom is baking us the cheesecake from Martha Stewart’s old “Weddings” book, but she needs a box to transport it to the hall. When she makes a sheet cake, it goes in a white cake box, but we can’t find a white cake box big enough for a tiered cake. Help?

Hi Jen,

There are tons of really great makeup+hair people in the SF! I’m personally using Taylor Pham and also love the work done by Nam Vo, Sherrie Long, and Glowing Bridal.

Thanks mrikagurl, Alice, Margaret!! This is very helpful! I will definitely check those make-up artists.

I really like Taylor Pham’s work as well but at $1K, she’s WAY out of my budget. My hair + make-up budget is ~$500 unfortunately. =(
