About Mrs. Blueberry

Darnit

April 10th, 2007 @ 2:46 pm by Mrs. Blueberry

There are some aspects of the wedding that, like it or not, I just have no control over, and am completely powerless to prevent. What happened with our getaway car is a prime example of this.

I haven’t mentioned this on here before because many of my ‘real’ friends read, and I wanted to keep it a surprise. But now that it’s not happening, I guess there’s no harm in sharing…

Our neighbor has a Rolls-Royce (and a Ferrari, but that’s another story!). A while back he offered to chauffeur us away from the reception. Understandably, Mr. Blueberry and I were really really excited about that, and planned accordingly (ie we didn’t get a limo).

Well, now the neighbor is out of the picture–no more details than that smiley3. So we’re car-less. Poo. And with no money left to hire a limo, either.

Looks like we’ll be leaving the wedding in this:

Oh well. Could be worse, I suppose. But I’m still bummed.

We tried renting a car, but we really wanted a Mustang convertible–or any convertible–and no one rents them in Missouri. We also thought about friends, or friends’ parents, or parents’ friends, and none of them have really cool cars either (except the aforementioned Rolls!). So we’re pretty much SOL. But that’s OK–a 2003 Grand Am isn’t a bad car at all! smiley102

Sucky, but maybe I can help… My uncle works in the business of antique/special car restoration and he literally has a worldwide network of people he knows with fancy schmancy cars. If you want to let me know what city the wedding will be in, I can see if he knows anyone for you. Drop me an email at laurashannonsmart AT hotmail DOT com.

Sorry to hear that. Have you tried looking in the directory for like a classic car club or something? In my old neighborhood we had a homecoming parade every year and all these people with classic cars offered to drive them in the parade so they could show them off. Or call a restoration place and see if they have any customers that might do it for you. It’s not like it’s a whole day of chauffering, just an hour or however long it takes to drive away from the reception and get to your hotel. Keep your eyes on the local papers too, to see if there are any announcements about that kind of stuff.

If it makes you feel better, I went to a wedding this past weekend where they drove away in a car of one of their parents. It was very nondescript, but her sisters had decorated it with Just Married flags and decals and stuff, and it was still really cute taking pics of them driving away, even though the car itself was nothing special.

A good detailing helps.

Anyway, when you look back on your photos decades later, your own car (scene of so many make-out sessions, road trips, etc.) will mean something. It will be nice to have at least one picture with the trusty ol’ horse. It will even look vintage and collectible one day and your grandkids will wish you’d kept it!

The other alternative (not too expensive) is to rent something like a nice SUV just for the day/weekend. Great for airport runs, transporting stuff, carpooling, minimizing parking, etc., and if something messes up the vehicle (cake frosting, cigar smoke, etc.) at least it’s not your job to clean it up when you have other things to do.

I’m getting a chauffeured hybrid SUV to take us away. No driving for us!!! Less than $200 for the 2 hour minimum. Try a car service in your area. If you don’t know of one, call the concierge desk of a nice local hotel for a recommendation.

Our hotel works with a car service and they happen to be lincoln town cards. That would work and it would be very cheap just as a getaway car. Also look at local resources as teh other girls suggested. Mr. Snow Pea used to lend out his little red mazda miata every year to the highschool for homecoming.

We’re not getting a limo or a fancy car either. =) No one will even notice once you dress up your car a little with streamers and the works. =)

honestly, i don’t think we are going to get a limo or fancy car either for our wedding. i dunno sure it looks nice, but i just don’t feel like the expense is necessary for us. i dunno. call me crazy.

If you live anywhere near an airport, you can rent a “luxury car” for the day with a driver, it’s a lot less expensive than a limo. You can’t drive around and booze with your friends, but it’s better than getting your dress all smunched up in the car (I have a poofy dress so I wouldn’t want to fit into my little toyota).

sounds sort of like our situation - we were going to borrow my friend’s convertible mustang…but then he sold it. so our getaway was my husband’s honda civic, chauffered by his brother. it wasn’t so bad!

There was a time not so long ago (i.e. anytime before the last ten years) where everyone used their own car as the getaway car. I think it’s great if you have a fancy car budgeted in but don’t let the wedding industry make you feel like it is a must.

A kind of related funny story, my father in law arranged a beautiful vintage mercedes limo for us and had decked it out with champage and a driver (his other son). When we got in on of my drunk bridesmaids and her date had crashed and popped the champagne themselves. “We need a ride, this is cool right?” They wouldn’t get out even though we’d arranged other rides for them back to the hotel.
Ohhhhh fills me with rage just thinking about it.
In hindsight we didn’t need the car at all.

My brother and his wife left on horses :)
