Flower Girl Problem

April 10th, 2007 @ 2:27 pm by Mrs. Strawberry

Just when I thought I had the dresses worked out for the flower girls, I run into a small problem. I have two flower girls. One is in first grade, the other second. I just found out that one of them is almost 5 foot 6 and wears a girls 14. The dresses I picked out only come in up to a 12. AHH! I’m thinking that I might make her a junior bridesmaid. But I know she was really looking forward to walking down the aisle with the other little girl. Woe is me. :) Any ideas?

wow!!! that is tall for a 2nd grader. Perhaps you can get her a similar white flower girl dress so she can still walk down the aisle w/ the little one since she’s looking forward to is so much.

That’s taller than me, and I’m going to be 26 in a month!

I would pick out a larger dress that matches the little one’s dress and still have them walk together. It’s your wedding — do whatever will make you happy.

Wow, she is tall. Have you not seen her in awhile or did she just shoot up recently?

I’d say talk to her. Tell her she can choose between walking with a “little girl” or she can be honored as a “big girl” with the other maids. If you think she’d be awkward as a flower girl, you might tell her that she’s the perfect size (;)) to fit nicely up on stage with you. Given the options, I bet she’d choose to be with the grownups. I’ve always been short for my age, but it’s hard for me to imagine a girl who is already taller than me holding a role that I envision for little four-year-olds!

I would still have them walk together. She’s tall, but she’s still only a year older than the other little girl. How would the younger girl feel, if they know each other? Flowergirl dresses are pretty similar, you could always find a similar dress in a larger size, or just change the dress entirely to one that goes up to the larger sizes. Speaking of which, if your wedding isn’t for a while yet, both the girls might grow. I didn’t have my flowergirl’s and youngest bridesmaid’s dresses (they’re wearing the same dress, in opposite colors) ordered until two months before the wedding just in case they grew.

I was a very tall child myself–although not that tall–and I sometimes liked that people treated me as older, and sometimes I didn’t like it. You could ask her, too, what she would like to do.

At a wedding I was in in December, the junior bridesmaid walked with the flowergirl because it made both of them more comfortable. It looked great, and everyone was happy.

I agree…have them walk together. But–(and I mean this kind of seriously) can you get photographic proof that she is 5′6″ and not 4′6″? 5′6″ sounds really super tall for a second grader (who is 7-8 years old).

But then, I am a 5′ tall 30-something…

I would first ask her parents what their take is. Her height is a blessing, of course, but she’s probably self-conscious and teased daily in school.

I’d treat her according to her age, not her height and get a youthful style just in a larger size. If the size 12 fits her in the upper body (maybe with some minor altering), maybe you can add an underskirt that hangs longer in a color/fabric complementary to the dress and your wedding color(s). For the shorter girl, maybe add the same (just in a shorter length; shorten the top skirt so the proportions are appropriate) and they will match just fine and have a little extra style.

Some junior bridesmaid dresses are more grown-up than others, so if you can find a more youthful style, and you really want the girls to match — Get 2 junior bridesmaids dresses and tailor them to fit both girls.

Yeah, 5′6” is amazingly tall for a 2nd grader. Without any disrespect to her, I guess I was wondering, too, if 5′6” was really her correct height. It’s possible that she is a fuller size and could wear a girls’ size 14, but I’d have to say that is honestly the biggest 2nd grader I have ever seen or heard of, so that’s why I am wondering if the facts were accurate.

Can’t she wear a junior bridesmaid dress and still walk down the aisle with the other flower girl? Perhaps you can find coordinating dresses rather than perfectly matching dresses.

Holy Mackerel! I bet that the little girl is actually 4′6″. I remember being 4′7″ in the 4th grade and being of average height back then. Of course I only grew another 5 inches since then. hahaha. But September is a long ways away when it comes to kids and their growth spurts. I would hold off on making any final decisions on the dresses for several more months if I were you and then reevaluate what your needs are at that time.

Well- I have no comment about the dress - do what ever makes you happy - but just wanted to say that I believe you! My friends daughter is 4 and she is 4′ tall…both of her parents played college ball. It is really hard to remember that she hasn’t even started kindergarten yet when she comes up to my shoulders!

Yeah, both girls are my second cousins. Emily is very small for her age and Riley is very big for her age. Her parents are both over 6 foot. :) She’s not teased or anything–she’s well adjusted and absolutely precious!! She’s just solid!

my goodness-a 5′ 6″ second grader?!? That’s 4 inches taller than me! :-D

I agree that you should try to make *her* feel the most comfortable. I know we had a (sort of vaguely) similar situation with our FG’s–just that of the four, one is only a year old, and another one is a pretty chunky 2nd grader. We ended up finding a similar infant style, so the littlest one could match the other 3. And the style that we chose went all the way up to a girls’ size 16, so we could fit the biggest girl too.

Have you talked to any bridal shops about this yet? I bet they could suggest some similar-styled dresses so the girls can sort-of match if they want to :-)
