Portrait-Ready Hair

April 10th, 2007 @ 9:29 am by Mrs. Plumeria

I haven’t yet had a hair trial for the upcoming wedding, and I didn’t have one before our bridal portraits last week. In fact, I didn’t book my hair appointment for the portraits until the week of! But despite my tendency towards procrastination, my updo turned out fine — and served as a pseudo hair trial, if you will.

I called The Spa at Stacy Monroe’s, in Castro Valley (East Bay Area), a couple of days beforehand and was fortunate enough to snag an appointment right when the salon opened. My hairdresser’s name was Kat, and she was great — I brought a couple of pictures of styles I liked, handed over my haircomb, and let her work her magic. Half an hour and $65 later, I had this:

The front, in the dress (this was after photos, when my head had been out in the strong wind next to the bay for hours, and the curls were not quite as tight as before)

I went with a full updo this time around, just to get the feeling. Through no fault of Kat, whose hands are deft and skillful enough to secure the admiration of anyone, I think I will most likely go for a half-updo for the day of. I wear my hair down almost every day, and having all of it swept up didn’t feel as natural as I’d wished — I think I’d like to have some hair down my back. I am planning to have an actual hair trial next week sometime, with the girl who will be doing my hair on my wedding day (an acquaintance who does wedding hair on the side). More pics to come then!

Oh you look absolutely gorgeous!!! I love the comb. $65 is a really great price. I love the front the way the bangs are sweeped over.

you look beautiful!! i love updos, but if you usually wear your hair down, then halfup halfdown would be a great alternative! =)

Gorgeous and so flattering on you! It’s refreshing to see something other than the rhinestone teen-princess tiara we have been seeing brides wear for 8 years now.

Hi Ms.Am,

Thanks for the compliments! Actually, I made the hair comb by combining a cheap crystal barrette from Walgreen’s with a deconstructed clearance bridal comb. It worked for me, hehe… but if you’re looking for something kind of similar I’d check out some of the crystal combs at Headpiece Heaven: http://www.headpieceheaven.com/BewitchingBow.html

I probably would have bought the “Sophia” comb on this page if I didn’t DIY. http://www.naugi.com also has some very nice pieces. Hope to help!
