Make Me Up, Scotty

April 11th, 2007 @ 11:03 am by Mrs. Kiwi

I am unable to DIY. I have no skill or patience for it. Despite that, my cheap ways have led me to DIY my makeup. I haven’t tried anything yet because I have yet to find a picture of what I want! I’ve tried everywhere - Brides Mag, Modern Bride, The Knot…

The Knot gave me a rundown of makeup tips for Latinas (I’m half).

Finding Foundation
Latina women often have yellow-orange undertones to their complexion. For the most even coverage, look for yellow-orange foundations and tinted moisturizer to match your skin tone. If your skin has a slightly green cast in the winter — a common frustration for Latinas — a deep bronzing powder will give you a warm, tanned look. Don’t forget to apply a pop of color on the apples of your cheeks. Remember that rosy colors — not oranges — work best in counteracting green.

Choosing Your Colors
Think about applying a shot of bright color somewhere on your face, but not everywhere. Avoid fuchsias and jewel tones, and keep things smoky with deep, rich hues — shades in the wine, plum, deep pink, and rose families are your best options for cheeks and lips. Play up your eyes with colors in the sable, cocoa, and mahogany families.

Makeup, Then KissThe lips are the obvious place to go for glamour. Many Hispanic women naturally have a beautiful dark color to their lips, so deep lipsticks look quite lovely. You can also play with the finish: Go for a little more sparkle by layering a shimmer or gloss on top of a matte lip color. And while softer lipstick tones will also look great on you, it’s best to avoid brights, like oranges, and corals.

They also have makeup tips for Asians here and African-Americans here.

Well, that is slightly helpful, but I don’t have a beautiful dark color to my lips. In fact, my lips are super pale all the time. Drives me crazy. Anyway, I’m looking for a natural look, with slightly more defined eyes, a smoky look with maybe a rose lipstick.

Can you guys help me find good made up face pictures?

Hi Miss Kiwi,

I’m sorry that I don’t have any pictures to share, but just wanted to let you know of other good sources of information about DIY makeup. The Bobbi Brown web site has suggestions for Latinas (and other ethnic groups) at http://www.bobbibrowncosmetics.com/templates/looks/thelook_hispanic.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CATEGORY6021.

Also check out the book Makeup Makeovers: Weddings by Robert Jones. It has great general tips for anyone doing makeup herself, and discusses how the time of day can affect photographs and the best corresponding makeup.

I found a lot of inspiration at http://www.haircomesthebride.com. They do hair and makeup and they have a “recent work” album that has before/afters, a celebrity album, and a bridal portfolio album with hundreds of pics including a decent amount of latina women

For do it yourself make-up a good website with step-by-step instructions is http://www.bridalbabe.com/html/l2-look.html. Pick the type of look you want and then click on each step to get instructions.

Mary is right, I am Latina & Bobbi Brown has excellent tips. Also, I love make-up, have been wearing it for many years, & plan to go DIY for my wedding day. If you visit the BB counter at Bloomies, ask them for a step-by-step guide (it’s a small booklet). I got one when I had a trial done, but they are free. It will tell you exactly what to do for your wedding day.

do was L88lmr says and just do the rounds over a few lunchtimes of different counters and get a few ideas. wouldn’t go with an idea, just say you want to have a trial run and see what they suggest, oh and make sure you ask them how they achieved each look.
the ta da! is all very well but if you can’t do it yourself, it’s a bit of a pita!!xx

I would highly recomend that you go to a MAC counter!!! The girls there are usually really nice an they help match you up. Its best to go during the week though, they’re less crowded and in most counters when they have nothing to do theyll do all your make up for free!
