Local Planning Resources

Just a quick tip –

For those of you in California (especially the Los Angeles area), there are two resources you should be aware of when planning your weddings. They were absolutely invaluable to me when planning, and I know that they’ve been helpful to lots of other ladies.

1. Here Comes the Guide

For anyone who has been to Borders, I’m sure you’ve seen this giant guide laying around the wedding planning section. Save your money for something else you’d enjoy better because this resource is available for FREE online. Plus, when you use their site online, you can find locations by search criteria (metropolitan area, catering preferences, capacity, etc.).

They’ve expanded the guide to also include a search for services (coordinators, florists, etc).

From their site:

“Your complete resource for California ceremony and reception locations and California wedding services. We have over 1,000 fantastic Northern California wedding locations and Southern California wedding locations and pre-screened wedding professionals to help you plan ceremonies, receptions, rehearsal dinners, corporate events or parties in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, San Diego, Lake Tahoe, Orange County, Palm Springs, Mendocino and everywhere in between.”

2. LABridezilla

This resource was started by a Los Angeles knottie who wanted a place for people to come and read about each other’s vendor experiences (especially since The Knot often gripes about negative reviews, as they make their money from those vendors’ advertising dollars). LABridezilla is another FREE site where you can find recommendations (or hear horror stories) about real brides’ experiences with a variety of wedding professionals — from videographers to photographers to wedding rings to DJs and beyond.

LABridezilla is done in a message board format so responders can add to the conversation whenever they have finished their experience with a vendor, including both their review, as well as contact information for the vendor. As with any message board, you must sign up to become a member, but there are no membership criteria (i.e. you will not be subject to approval), and again, this is a completely free service. LABridezilla has vendor reviews of both Los Angeles and some Orange County area vendors.

Good luck and happy planning to all!

Hi Miss Pearl,
I wanted to ask you about something regarding the Soolip Wedding. I was there too and went to the Frette booth (its a high end bedding linen company) and signed up for their newsletter (not sure why though). Yesterday I got home and was so excited to see a big box delivered to me that was aabout 2 feet X 1 foot X 4 inches. I opened up the brown box to find a fancy white Frette box inside with pretty brown ribbon wrapped around it. I opened this up to find inside…(drum roll)…..a letter. Yup, a letter. All that waisted packaging to send me a letter to thank me for visiting their booth at the Soolip Wedding. I didn’t fully read the letter because I was so mad at A) all that waisted packaging and B) what a let down after opening 2 big boxes. I should tell on them to the Green Wedding people that were at the Soolip Wedding.
Did you get one of these, or were you smarter than me and not sign up at their booth? I want to send the box back to them and include some trash from the local landfill they are contributing to, but I’ll just send them a letter in an envelope.

HAHA!!! I didn’t go to the Frette booth, so I didn’t receive one of those. However, I have received numerous pieces of junk mail since Soolip (wedding related). That’s kind of sucky that they are wasting that much stuff just to advertise.
