Mrs. Kiwi, Los Angeles Age and Occupation in 06: 27, Bookkeeper Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, P.E. Teach/Coach @ private schools in LA Engagement Date: March 31, 2006 Wedding Date: November 3, 2007 Venue: Radisson Hotel About Me: I'm a bookkeeper who failed high school algebra. I'm currently living in Los Angeles, literally a street over from where I grew up with Mr. Kiwi, my honey of three years. We have a jumbo mini-dachshund (seriously, he's huuuuge), and we're planning an autumn themed wedding on a shoestring, paid for by ourselves. The wedding date is my late grandma's birthday, I needed her there somehow, and that seemed like the best way for us. I can't believe I'm a Bee! I couldn't be more proud!

Words To Marry By

April 12th, 2007 @ 6:18 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

This morning I was helping a friend out by reading her wedding invitation proof, when we were both a little puzzled by the invitation wording.

According to einvite.com, these are the rules of traditional invitation wording, line by line:

  1. Begin with the full, formal name(s) and title(s) of the event sponsors. These are not necessarily the people who are paying for the wedding. While the bride’s parents traditionally sponsor a wedding, anyone can be a sponsor, including other relatives, the groom’s parents, or the couple themselves.
  2. Following the name(s) is the phrase “request the honour of your presence” for a service held in a house of worship. The variation “request the pleasure of your company” is used for a wedding held in any other location.
  3. The next line reads “at the marriage of their daughter” or whatever the relation is between the sponsor(s) and the bride.

You can read the rest of the rules here.

What if you’d rather have the introduction a little less formal? Thesaurus.com has these other options for “marriage”: alliance, amalgamation, coupling, hook, life sentence… the list goes on.

Please stay tuned for our invite proofs to read: Miss Kiwi and Mr. Kiwi request your presence at their life sentencing of marriage. :D

What are you using as the word for your marriage? Union? Sacrament of marriage? Wedding?

lol “Life sentencing of marriage”..you’re too funny Miss Kiwi. I think I’m using wedding but it could be marriage. I also went with the less formal “the please of your company is requested at..”.

hahaha “a friend” :-D

We’re going with “pleasure of your company” and “at their marriage” since we are hosting “together with their [our] parents”. My only concern is that “at their marriage” sounds more like at their entire lifelong relationship of marriage more than at the actual wedding/ceremony. When it’s “the marriage of their daughter” or whatever it sounds more like a finite event, but when it’s just “at their marriage” it feels more like a long term thing to me for some reason. That said we’re hopefully giving final approval for our invites TONIGHT so I think we’ll just stick with “at their marriage” for lack of an option we like better.

We are going very casual and secular so we used “pleasure of your company as they exchange wedding vows”.

I don’t think changing the word “marriage” is the way to make it less formal. I would change the other words. How would you “request the honor” of someone’s “presence” in ‘07-speak?

Maybe “Together with their parents, Miss Piggy and Kermit invite you to their wedding ceremony”

“joyfully invite you to share in their happiness as they unite in marriage”

it’s exactly how I feel!

With divorced and remarried parents, plus doing most of the wedding ourselves we went with….
Together with their families
“my name” and “his name”
Invite you to share in the celebration of their marriage
On……………
at………..

We fudged over who was hosting by saying, “The honour of your presence is requested at the…” A rare occasion for which the passive voice can be handy!

Even though my parents are really hosting, we did…
(My Mom)
and (My Dad)
and (His Parents)
request…
as their children
(Me)
and
(Him)
are united
in the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony

… sounds so simple… but I cannot tell you HOW LONG it took to get that! That was the only way it was going to work gramatically, etc etc, etc… Period. *sigh of relief that that decision is finally over*

… although, “life sentencing of marriage” does say something… ;)

I don’t think we followed any of the rules but the invites are all printed and DIY’d and mostly addressed. too bad for the rules.

(me) and (him)
Together with their parents
invite you join in celebration
as they unite their hearts and lives
in the Lord Jesus Christ
