Beehive

April 15th, 2007 @ 3:07 am by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. marvil’s SO is going through his visa approval process, and once it’s approved they’ll get engaged. Since they don’t know exactly when that will be, is there anything that she can start planning now?
  2. elle has 3 bms - a friend and her two fsil’s that are twins. But she wants to add another friend as a bm, and ask one of the twins to step down. How can she do this without offending anyone?
  3. Kara wants to know if anyone in Long Island rented a bus to transport guests. She has a lot of out of town guests but is wondering if it’s too expensive. Any rental company recommendations with reasonable rates?
  4. jmnz needs to order envelope liners, but the shipping to Hawaii is so expensive. Should she ship them to her calligrapher in California and then add the liners afterwards? Or should she buy prelined envelopes and save the diy for the invites and pocketfolds?
  5. Miss. Kakerwhart is looking for a calligraphy pen that’ll work well with her Stardream metallic envelopes.
  6. miss melodious is looking for a 1 tier cathedral length veil, but they’re so expensive and she doesn’t want to buy it on ebay. Does anyone know where or who she might buy a used one from?

Elle,

You absolutely CANNOT do that. Period. There is no way around that. You either have to add another member to your BP or move on.

Miss Melodious,

Try http://www.occanseydesigns.com I’ve heard wonderful things about them & they are VERY reasonably priced.

Miss Kakerwhart- I had dark red stardream metallic envelopes and tried several things to get the ink to show up on the envelopes. (computer printer, different calligraphy markers, permanent markers). I used the old fashioned calligraphy pen that you change the tips on and dip it into the ink bottle. Took a little practice but thanks to high school art class it came right back. THe brand was Speedball and the ink I bought was also Speedball brand India Ink. It work perfect- dried quickly and stood out brilliantly against the dark red envelopes. Speedball makes several different colors of ink.

Elle - the only way you could really get away with that is by giving the twin a better job in exchange– so that it becomes a promotion, not a rejection. If you can’t think of any way to do that, well, there’s no shame in having four attendants.

Jmnz - If you really feel like you have to have envelope liners, a cheaper solution may be to buy regular colored paper locally and cut it into liner size yourself (you could also possibly find a printer who would cut it for you). However, I personally would save my money and just use unlined envelopes. It ends up being a huge expense on something people probably won’t notice and definitely will throw away.

ms melodious - one-tier veils are really easy to make, even if you’re sewing illiterate like I am. You can find tutorials on the internet (or you can buy a pattern at a sewing store), and tulle costs something like $1 a yard. I seriously made my veil for $5.

Hope this helps.

Sorry Elle but you just can’t. There is absolutely no way to do that without hurting her feelings. I suppose that means that you can still remove her from the wedding party, so long as you are okay with hurting a FSIL and are prepared to deal with the fallout that will accompany that decision. I feel your pain on this one! Good luck.

marvil - I am generally not a fan of planning a wedding when not engaged…and since you don’t have a date, don’t worry about booking vendors. What you CAN do is establish a budget and guestlist, shop for vendors and put together planning pics of your ideas. Maybe buy the Martha Stewart or Karen Bussen planner to compile clippings, ideas, business cards, etc. Good luck!

elle - Lets put it this way, there’s no way to do it without offending someone. You’d be looking at friendship-ending if you fire a BM. I would just have a fourth BM and if FI only has three GM that’s okay, too, to have uneven sides.

jmnz - both of your questions are feasible. I would add the liners later (ship and get them printed) and handle all the DIY of the pocketfolds as well. If you’re growing tired of DIY, I’ve heard that pocketfolds are a lot of work (always worth it!) but you may want to buy pre-lined if you don’t think you’ll want to do the work. You’ll probably save money DIY.

Elle-you can’t. Not unless you think she wants out anyway.

Miss Melodius–I second the vote for Occansey. Kathy made me a beautiful veil for a great price, and did it quite quickly. It’s exactly what I imagined. It’s not the cathedral length that’s so expensive, it’s the extras, I think. If you want an embellished one, it will be more. I checked it out, and a 1-layer cathedral veil starts at $52 from Occansey, which is very reasonable.

Marvil - you could start scouting reception sites for price ranges and style, maybe visit a few and select a site you like. Then you can set the date based on their availability once you have the visa. You could also start looking for your wedding dress, and start thinking about what sort of style you want for your wedding. Maybe start researching vendors and come up with a short list of vendors you’ll consider for your wedding. You could then contact them later on once you’ve set a date.

Elle - I’d have to agree with the others. In general there’s no way to “fire” a BM without hurting her feelings, but I think it would be especially hurtful if you fired one twin and not the other. Can you imagine if you were in her shoes? You’d feel like the other sister was being favoured. If it were me I’d be very angry and hurt. I think you should just try having 4 BM’s instead.

marvil - you can start getting ideas of what you what in your wedding, set your budget and begin vendor research. you can even start requesting quotes and stuff to help. you can pretty much do everything except actually book. i’d hold out on visiting/meeting potential vendors until you have a date but other than that, there’s nothing wrong with a little pre-planning [that's what i'm doing]! congrats and good luck :-)

marvil, I made the mistake of pre-conceiving great plans for a fall themed wedding in Nov when we first got engaged. When we actually started visiting venues, we found a place we loved for a great price in Sept- so now I’m reworking most of my colors/centerpieces/favors etc! That said, there’s certainly nothing wrong w/ formulating ideas now (and it definitely helps to start early!), just don’t get too attached to them. And know that you shouldn’t plan anything permament till you book a venue, since that sets the date, theme, etc.

I am aware that some suggestions have been posted before, but I am having a hard time deciding on what songs to play for the following:

1. recessional
2.first dance song- I know this will be personal but what have you selected?
3. Father/ daughter dance and/ or mother/ son dance.
4. anniversary dance
5. last dance.

Thanks and I can’t wait to hear some of your selections! :)

stp - We actually did “Wouldn’t it Be Nice” by the Beach Boys for our first dance, “My Girl” for the father daughter, and, ironically, “My Guy” for the mother son. It was really nice though.

I need help! A while back (I can’t remember when) there was a post and in the comments section there were a whole bunch of recipes for tea sandwiches. It wasn’t the sandwich recipe contest post–it was a different one. I have checked the archives and tried searching by tags etc. But I cannot find it! Does anyone have an amazing memory?

Might want to consider using a judge for your wedding officiant. Does your fiancĩ or anyone you know have any ties to a NJ judge ie. maybe you know some lawyers, etc.? Many judges have been wedding officiants- usually for couples that they know personally. However, if someone you are close to is friends with a judge then you might be able to get him/her to marry you!
