About Mrs. Pumpkin

Since I am the newest Bee, I thought I would spend a little time telling you a bit about how Mr. Pumpkin and I met and how he proposed!

Mr. Pumpkin and I met in Grade 9 at our high school through a mutual friend. We have different memories of the very first time we met, but either way, we were friends first. Then the next year I became the athletic trainer for his football and basketball teams and we started spending more time together. We spent quite a bit of time flirting (even though I was dating someone else at the time) and he always made me laugh. We shared a love of music and would often say to one another, “You like ___?!? No way! I love ___!” Eventually I broke up with the other fella, and Mr. Pumpkin phoned me and asked me out. We have been dating ever since!

We got engaged on July 14, 2006. We had been talking about getting married for quite a while (we *had* been dating for 12 years! It was about time, am I right ladies? :)) but we were waiting for the right time. The general consensus was to wait until after law school to get engaged and then get married in 2008.

I was working as a teaching assistant for a summer property law program last year, and at the end of the class I was given a 5 day weekend while the profs marked the final exams. I was really looking forward to going home to Regina since the summer had been really busy and I hadn’t seen my family in a while. A couple of weeks before that Mr. Pumpkin started talking about how he had to go up North for work that weekend and that I should come with him. I hated this idea because it would mean more time away from my family, and he wouldn’t even be with me because he would be working. Nevertheless, he kept whining about wanting me there at night when he got off work, and since we would be in one of my family’s favourite childhood vacation spots (Waskesiu! If you haven’t been, you must go at your first opportunity!) I finally gave up and said that I would go.

We drove up to the lake after work on Friday and got there just after dinner. Mr. Pumpkin suggested that since this was the only full night we would have together that weekend, that we should go for a hike up to the golf course where there was a bench to sit and watch the sunset. I (cluelessly!) agreed and that is exactly what we did. Once we were up there, Mr. P started acting sort of strange. Other people kept stopping on the road and getting out of their cars to watch the sunset and he kept getting angry every time someone would stop. I couldn’t figure this out because we still had the bench and therefore the best view.

Finally everyone left and we snuggled on the bench and watched the most beautiful sunset. Throughout the evening I had been taking pictures of everything and anything - just generally being a camera geek, which Mr.P normally would tease me about, but this time he didn’t (another weird thing that I did not pick up on at all). And so when the sunset was really getting good, he suggested that he take my picture with the sunset behind me and then we would switch. I obliged and when it was his turn to pose, he suggested that he get lower to get more of the view in the background so he went down on one knee. I was so oblivious that I didn’t even pick up on that!! After I took the picture he pulled out the ring, said some extremely romantic and wonderful things and asked me to be his wife!

After I said yes, cried and then kissed him a whole bunch we settled down to watch the rest of the sunset. It was so romantic and lovely that I did not want it to end, but I was getting worried about him being too tired in the morning for work so I suggested that we get going. He laughed and said, “You still think I have to work?” I was so duped that even after the proposal I didn’t figure out that the whole thing was a trick to get me up there so that he could propose! He had planned a whole weekend at a resort for us and we spent the next few days sleeping in, having breakfast in bed and laying in the sun on the beach. It was the best weekend of my life!

Here are some pictures from our hike and the sunset:

LOL! Northern Saskatchewan is practically nothing BUT trees! You should come up and check it out. It is really beautiful, the sunsets are always fantastic and if you are lucky you will get to see the most brilliant Northern Lights dancing across the sky. It is also extremely affordable. You can rent a 2 bedroom cabin for about $1200/week (CDN) and golf on some of the most beautiful courses for under $50 for 18 holes. Then there are hiking trails, beautiful lakes to fish and swim in and neat little stores in the town sites to shop in. I love it up there!

I should work in tourism! :)

Yeah Miss Pumpkin, Tourism SK should recruit you! Sounds lovely… maybe one day I’ll make it up there. I’m still recovering from my cross-Canada drive in 2004 so I doubt it’ll be anytime soon…

Yay for being Canadian, Miss Pumpkin! Could you please do a post sometime about cabins or hotels in Northern Canada? I would really love to honeymoon up there, and I’ve always had this weird desire to see Hudson Bay, but never known whether there’s actually tourism up there. Thankyouthankyouthankyou!
