Calligraphy-esque

April 16th, 2007 @ 12:27 pm by Mrs. Bluebell

So, after all the thinking I did about envelope decisions, I went out last week and bought a calligraphy pen! My local Eckerds only had one type - the Sheaffer’s mini Calligraphy Classic kit - so I just bought that. I found that I like the skinniest nib best, and wrote a bunch of names of people we’re inviting on a piece of paper. I’m pretty happy with how they turned out.

And then since I didn’t want to post a list of our friends’ and family’s full names, I wrote this for you guys!

m842345

Honestly, I think the real names came out a bit better than these, but I’m still pretty happy with the overall look and I’ll practice a bit more before actually putting ink to envelope!

What do you guys think? Are any of you doing your own “calligraphy” despite a distinct lack of training/inherent talent? happy01

[PS If there is anyone out there who knows all of the names on this list, you will totally be my best friend forever!]

I did the same thing with the same kit. Get a bunch of refills in your color, because if you use it for all the outer and inner envelopes, thank you notes, placecards, etc. you will go through them.

BTW, people LOVED that everything was hand-calligraphed (is that a word?) and most didn’t know it was DIY. I practiced a bunch with the red ink (since I wasn’t using it for wedding stuff anyway) and learned a few letters that had to be written in steps so the ink would flow (writing slowly helped) and not scratch the paper.

Oh, have fun!!! I loved this part!!!

In New York, Art Brown’s carries TONS of writing instruments and ink refills. It was recommended by Michael C. Fina, and they were right, this is a great shop.

Wow you have really beautiful penmanship! I only recognized Hermione Granger from HP and Rayanne from MSCL though. But I LOVE Harry Potter despite being 27 years old - cannot wait till the last book comes out in July!

i was debating on my invites too….i thought i had decided on running the envelopes through the printer (if that’s even possible)…but i discovered a friend had take a class in calligraphy. so we’ll get together so she can show me how…but i warned her that she may end up doing them for me if i can’t handle it. Great inspiration!
thanks

STEVE HOLT! I can’t not do it too, sorry… I have been taking calligraphy lessons at our local library, but it takes me FOREVER…you have inspired me to go out and get a decent pen to keep practicing.

I wasn’t going to do anything by hand, but when I made cards to ask my bridesmaids to be in the wedding party, they were all so amazed with how I addressed the envelope that they convinced me to do it myself. It’s not traditional calligraphy; very close to the font Pristina if you have it on your computer. I agree with my bridesmaids that it actually looks better than “standard” calligraphy. :)

Hahaha no offense to everyone else but the people who just said “STEVE HOLT” are totally my favorites. :-D but yay everyone else who recognized names too!!!

And yay calligraphers! It really was surprisingly easy once I figured out how I wanted a given letter to look, and I was sooooooooo much faster per address after doing a few! Everyone give it a try!

Also it’s my favorite past time now. I totally want to find random things to write all fancy!!
