IPOD Wedding Song List

April 16th, 2007 @ 6:19 pm by Mrs. Apple

For Mr. Apple and I music is key. We love to listen to a broad list of music genres from alternative, to jazz, country, blues, hard rock, r & b, pop, and classic rock. We’re working on a list right now and have a nice array of selected slow songs, but are having difficultly finding fast dance songs. His parents are quite conservative so no “shake your rump” songs would be appropriate. I think Mr. Apple informed me his aunts like to “cha cha,” so we’re using Michael Buble’s “Sway” as an alternative song. We also have a couple of jazz musician friends (trumpet players) who are helping with our wedding song list.

Does anyone have any suggestions on great fast dance songs that are tame? HELP!

Here is a few of our songs on our wedding ipod list. :-)

Feeling Good - Michael Buble
I Wanna Go Home - Michael Buble
Sway - Michael Buble
You and I - Michael Buble
Taking a Chance on Love - Renee Olstead
Arms of a Woman - Amos Lee
Little Wonders - Rob Thomas
Waiting All My Life - Rascal Flatts
Hello It’s Me - John Legend
Nine Million Bicycles - Katie Melua
The Ridde (You & I) - Five For Fighting
The World - Five For Fighting
‘Cause I Love You - Johnny Cash & June Carter
You and I Both - Jason Mraz
Collide - Howie Day
We Are In Love - Harry Connick Jr.
The Most Beautiful Girl - Harry Connick Jr.
Landslide - Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks
Wide Open Space - Dixie Chicks
Come Dance With Me - Diana Krall
Just The Way You Are - Diana Krall
Crash Into Me - Dave Matthews Band
Stolen - Dashboard Confessional
Put Your Records On - Corinne Bailey Rae

sure - I’ve been working on this recently too. Oldies are always good ~ Dancing Queen, Respect, Stayin Alive, Ain’t no Mountain, Beatles, Elvis (Little less conversation is a good one), Grease.

Some others I think we are using:
Counting Crows - Accidentally in love; B52 - Love Shack; Van Morrison - Brown Eyed girl; Smashmouth - I’m a believer; Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Love Rollercoaster; Romantics - What I like About You; Beyonce - Crazy in Love; Jennifer Lopez - Let’s get Loud, Waiting for Tonight; Madonna - Music, Ray of Light; The Wiseguys - Start the Commotion

I also am a big techno fan so I have a bunch ~ Darude Sandstorm is always great! Let me know if these are similar to what you are looking for and I can email you some more. Hope this helps :)

So, are you guys doing an iPod and big speakers for your reception - in lieu of a DJ or Band? Or are you having a DJ / Band, and the iPod is just for when your musicians are taking a break?

We were thinking about doing just an iPod and speakers for our reception, but after we thought about it, we couldn’t remember being at a wedding where someone had successfully done that. We got a little worried about how well it would go over, and now we’re hesitating. We’d love to hear that you think the iPod can be a standalone option!

Jess, try this site. I just googled “ipod wedding” and came across this article. At the bottoms is a lot of feedback - from people who have done it, people who are thinking about it, people who have been to one, djs and their two cents, etc. Might help you out :)

Jess, We are doing an iPod and speakers at our wedding and a friend of mine has successfully pulled off two wedding receptions with just her iPod and speakers so it absolutely can be done. I think it does take some careful planning though. I was hesitant too because it is such an important part of the reception but I just couldn’t justify paying someone to come in and play all of the same music I already have!
My biggest lesson through the whole thing has been realizing that it isn’t about playing what I want to play, it is about playing what is going to make for a good party. So, I have had to ask myself, “is this on the list just because I like it or is it on the list because it will get people on the dancefloor?” That said, it is your wedding and this is an opportunity to tailor the playlist to your tastes, just remember that if it doesn’t go over well with your guests they won’t dance!

Thanks for the great posts! I’m feeling better than ever about our odds of pulling off the iPod wedding. My fiancee has literally 100GB of incredibly varied music, at least as much as many DJ’s own. We have a couple of guests who *are* DJ’s, of the techno-variety rather than the wedding-jockey variety, who I’m sure will be able to handle the occasional playlist change or soundboard management issues. It should go okay, I hope!

Actually, I am having a dj for our wedding. I meant from the post that these were our songs on our ipod list. -)

Awhile back I did ask our restaurant coordinator to see if it would be feasible to have an ipod set up in lieu of a dj..but unfotunately she didn’t allow it because the room with all of the receivers was not open for us to touch. Too much liability. -(

I definitely would check with your venue and if its feasible - go for it!But make sure to do a few practice tests and maybe even have a person in charge who is qualified to work the sound system and laptop. Good luck!

Some great cha cha’s:
J.Lo “Let’s Get Loud”
Christina Aguilera “Come On Over”
Pink “Get the Party Started”

Let me know if you need more songs that young people can recognize and are ballroom-danceable for the older folk. =)

Father Of The Bride

As father of the bride I asked the kids what they wanted. No band cause you’re stuck with them the whole night. No cheesy DJ. They had seen too many of them at other weddings (I am sure there are some good ones out there but they didn’t want to go that route). They really wanted the music to be personal and just seem like what they would play if they had people over to their house. So we IPoded it. Worked great. I made two playlists. One for the Opening Music which was for people coming in to the reception hall and into dinner. Then we stopped the music for toasts and cake cutting. Then started another playlist for Dance Music.

Basically after we exited the ceremony I went into the adjacent reception hall, plugged in my player into the built in sound system the hall had, and set the volume. Done. Stopped it for toasts and cake and then started it again for dancing. Done.

There is some advice I would like to pass along. Make sure you have a MP3 player that has smart volume. Smart volume is a feature on the MP3 player that allows you to set the volume you want and songs that are over that volume are brought down to that level and songs that are under that volume are increased to that level. You don’t want to fool around with going back and forth setting the volume the whole night. You do need to be prepared to adjust the volume a few times. The reason is that even though you have a player with smart volume you can’t control the noise level of the crowd. When they eat, their mouths are full so they don’t talk so the level may need to come down a little during dinner. Once they finish eating they start to mingle and the volume level will most likely need to be increased some. And if they get a little wild when the dancing starts the volume may have to increase even more. This seemed to be the only thing that having a DJ would fix. So if you want to shell out some dough to have someone adjust the volume a few times during the evening that is your choice.

If you can find a hall that has the sound system built in that is ideal. For us the Bose speakers were in the ceiling out of the way and the sound quality was very good. The plug in access was in a closet so that it was out of the way and no one that had one too many drinks could fool with the player.

Another thing is to have a back up player. I did not have to use a backup but had one just in case.

Bring an AC adapter. Last thing you need is to run out of battery. Most likely you will have to set the volume on your player quite high to play through the sound system. This high volume will drain the battery faster.

I was a little leery about IPoding the wedding music but it worked out great and a good time was had by all.
