We Have An MC!

April 18th, 2007 @ 10:30 am by Mrs. Pumpkin

My brother has agreed to be our MC and I am so happy he said yes! I had been putting off asking him because he is SO busy and I didn’t want to add more to his already full plate. But I was also worried that if he said no, we would have to ask someone else and I wanted to make sure that we would be giving them as much time as possible to prepare.

When I finally asked my brother, his reaction was not what I expected at first (he looked like I had asked him to give me his first born child or something!). So when he said that he had to think about it, I thought for sure it was going to be a “no” answer. Then morning he e-mailed me and said that he would be honored to be our MC!

This was a very important part of our reception since we are only having 1 speech, a toast to the couple, done by our MC. It HAD to be the right person. Someone who knows us both well, who would be funny, and who would not be too sentimental, too embarrassing or too long! (I know - tall order, right?) My oldest brother is the best story teller that we know, he has such a fantastic sense of humour and has been there through our whole relationship. So as soon as we started talking about who we wanted to do that job, we both knew that he would be our first choice.

Now we just need to ask my other brother and one of FI’s brothers to do the Welcome to the Family speeches at the rehearsal dinner. We are asking them instead of our parents because we are already asking so much of our parents and we didn’t want them to be too emotional or worrying about anything more than they already are. That said, the last couple of weddings that I have been to have had brothers of the bride do the W2TF speech, and they were the most emotional of the bunch. Protective big brother stuff I guess…

Who’s MC’ing your wedding, and who did you ask to give speeches?

Like you, my brother will be MCing our wedding. He excitedly volunteered himself as the MC. We have a close family friend who also volunteered to by our MC so we may have both of them do it.

We are probably going to have my uncle do it. He actually doesn’t know us that well, because he lives several hours away and we only see him usually once every few years, but he has a wicked sense of humour and is the most amazing storyteller. He’ll probably just pick out a couple of specific memories he has of us and turn it into a fantastic story anyway - and I kind of like that he doesn’t know us TOO well, that way he can’t tell any super embarrassing stories because he doesn’t know all our secrets!

Of course, we haven’t asked him yet. I have absolutely no idea who we could get to do it if my uncle is not able to, so keep your fingers crossed that he’s game for it :)

Being the shameless promoter that I am, I’d like to suggest that you buy my book as a gift for your emcee. It’s called “The Wedding MC: A Complete Guide to Success for the Master of Ceremonies” and you can buy it in Chapters/Indigo stores or online from my website at WeddingToasts.com.

I’ve now sold over 100,000 copies worldwide ……… and Regis Philbin himself used it to prepare for his own daughter’s wedding.

Trust me on this: Your emcee will thank you over and over again for giving him/her the book. And your wedding reception will much, much better with a well-educated, totally-prepared emcee.

Me again. I just realized that this blog is read by many Americans. The book is also available in Barnes & Noble, Waldenbooks, Borders and other fine bookstores across the country — but in the US, it’s called “Wedding Toasts Made Easy!” Buy it for the people making a toast at your wedding. I GUARANTEE they will do a much better job with their toast — and it will be a warm, personalized tribute rather than a canned or pre-written toast.

Cheers, Tom
