Garters and Groom’s Cakes

April 20th, 2007 @ 4:40 pm by Mrs. Pumpkin

I know I said that Mr. Pumpkin was involved in every wedding decision in my previous post about grooms, but there are also some things that I want to surprise him with! It seems so unfair that most of the wedding day and preparations are about the bride, so I want to try to have some things that would inject a little of his personality into the day as well. One of these is a garter. Mr. Pumpkin is a HUGE Chicago Bears fan, always has been, and so even though we are not doing the traditional garter toss I bought this cute one on ebay:

I also had wanted to surprise him with a groom’s cake, but considering our cake lady’s limitations, I think that idea is now a lost cause. Here are some cute groom’s cakes that I found on the Knot. I originally was hoping to do the first one, as Mr. Pumpkin is a McD’s nut!

But we are also both HUGE Michigan Wolverines fans so this next cake was my 2nd choice. I stayed away from this one mostly because it is something that we do together, so it wouldn’t really be a groom’s cake - it would be for both of us. And that defeats the whole purpose of doing something special just for him.

I may still try to attempt one of these on my own (well, I will probably recruit my mom to help me!) but we’ll see how eager I am to add something this difficult to my plate as the wedding gets closer and closer!

Are you surprising your FI with anything on the wedding day? Is there anything that is happening that day that you have planned to be just for him?

AHHH! Miss Pumpkin! Mr. Peach is a Michigan Alum and obviously a HUGE fan as well. Throughout the planning process he joked up about having blue and maize as the wedding colors, having michigan fight song for our first dance, etc. etc. I made him a garter out of Michigan’s colors. =) Curious… what makes you guys such a huge fan? Are either of you alums?

I am trying to think of ideas for FI, so far this is what I have come up with. He LOVES ice cream cake so I want to surprise him with a small one for dessert and our little Boston Terrier, Lola wont be at the wedding with us so I found a little boston terrier tie pin for him.

I am trying to think of some other good ideas too… he is a big Michael Jackson (only the 80s MJ) fan so I could always bust out the thriller dance. LOL. :)

instead of doing a mcdonalds grooms cake, what if you brought out a pyramid of mcdonalds cheeseburgers? it it still something special that he loves, and you don’t have to worry about making a cake or trying to decorate it. i think one of the other bees did this at her wedding with in and out burgers. . .

there are a few surprises on the candy buffet for my fiance. i also changed the butlered hors doeuvres to include “hot dogs in puffed pastry”. yeah, not my idea of good food but he comments each time they have them at a friend’s wedding… it will make him happy to have them, and it has become a running joke so he’ll get a laugh out of it!

Hail to the victors valliant, Hail to the conqu’ring heroes, Hail Hail to Michigan the leaders and best! How great to see so many Michigan fans.

Miss Peach - I have been a Michigan fan since I was about 5 years old. No one knows why I latched on to them but I did and my family was forced to watch them every Saturday (and New Years Day) since so they all are attached as well. Then when Mr. Pumpkin came into my life he was converted and now we all watch together and have even been to two games (one in Minnesota and one in the Big House! Of course Michigan won both games :) ) No one quite understands my crush on Lloyd Carr though…

My niece’s 2nd birthday falls on the same day as the Notre Dame Game this year and that is considered a serious problem to my family! We are all sort of holding our breath until the times are announced. I think we will probably end up having a birthday party from 10:00am to noon or something!

Go Blue indeed!

If I can get up the courage, I’ll serenade him with Shania Twain’s “From This Moment.” I sing it to him for fun, super over the top (I can’t sing), and it makes us laugh. We’ll see…

I’ve also put a special personal engraving in his ring and I’m having the minister tell everyone (including him) about it during the ceremony. Let’s hope he deosn’t notice it until then!

Yep, I had a surprise for him. It was the recessional music. He thought it was going to be one thing (the sort-of standard getaway music), but I coordinated w/ the organist and we had something played that really made him laugh — an inside joke that was really “us.” I didn’t want to give it away in the program though, so it just said “Recessional” and I’m so lucky that with all the joint editing we did together on the program, he didn’t catch that that was the one place that didn’t list the piece and artist.

Yeah, I’m thinking of getting all of the caterers to wear the ball cap of his favorite team. Cute and fun for our outdoor wedding. :)

Miss Pumpkin,
I did cakes like these for about 20years before I changed careers. If you do decide to do one of these your self, let me know. I will help you in any way I can. PS The burger isn’t that hard to do.
