Eloping, Part II

April 23rd, 2007 @ 11:38 am by Mrs. Blueberry

The other day I was Gmail chatting with my dad about my recent blog post, and he showed me a link to an ad that Google had decided worked well with our conversation:

Let’s Run Off

It’s a wedding planning site, rather Knot-esque, with hints and tips for anyone considering elopement. Though they seem to stretch the term “elopement” to include many DW’s and smaller ceremonies and are maybe a bit light on the “why the heck are you eloping anyway? Is it for the right reasons?” side of things, the site does seem to have more than a few good ideas to toss around.

But the meat of LRO is found in their registry–they work through online retailers L’n'T, Amazon, and Macy’s to create one ‘LRO’ registry.

A cute site, but really–isn’t a big part of elopement the spontaneous, secret, romantic nature of the thing? I guess I just don’t quite see the point, y’know?

So if you weren’t considering eloping before, would you think about it now? smiley504

FI’s brother eloped to avoid clashes between their two families (9 years later, everyone gets along fine)
After FI told him we were engaged, he offered to pay the judges fee if we eloped. More than once in the process we have joked abut scrapping this wedding planning craziness and just eloping. We want to celebrate this new start with people we love though, so it’s never been a serious consideration.

We joked around with eloping because it seemed really crazy to spend so much money for one day and for ppl we don’t really know (parent’s guests would make up 75% of the guests) but eloping in our minds means we have something to hide or that our families disaprove-which is not the case hehe. Sooo…all that joking around has led to strongly consider DW’s so we can spend that money on the ppl we care about the most instead of everyone and their momma’s.

I was talking to my mom last night about a girl at my college who eloped earlier this semester, and she said (direct quote):

“I will pay you to elope!”

…and now I am seriously considering it. Just grab our best friends and my pastor, rent a cabin in the mountians for a week, and have a big ‘ole party when we get home. Now I want to know his family’s perspective…

i don’t think eloping to be eloping unless it’s just the two of you and maybe a couple of friends that know about it - and you just do it without warning anyone.

it’s too late for us to elope. but i still wish we had done it when we were in vegas! but our wedding will also be lovely.

Eloping is very romantic. I would have been willing to elope. If the families are not against the marriage, they would probably appreciate a phone call letting them know that the couple is on their way to their honeymoon.
