We have a jumbo mini-dachshund (seriously, he's huuuuge), and we're planning an autumn themed wedding on a shoestring, paid for by ourselves. The wedding date is my late grandma's birthday, I needed her there somehow, and that seemed like the best way for us. I can't believe I'm a Bee! I couldn't be more proud!

Learning To Marry?

April 25th, 2007 @ 5:56 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

When Mr. Kiwi and I got engaged, I told him that if we’re marrying in a church, I wish it would be at St. Augustine Church in Culver City, CA (my hometown). The church is so classic looking, and is just so beautiful to be married in. That idea was tossed by the wayside when we decided to marry in the tent at the Radisson. Which was also tossed by the wayside when we got a “deal” at Mr. Kiwi’s church.

So, even though we’re not marrying there, we do get to take our marriage prep class there! Yes, it is sad that I’m super excited about that, right? Well, I called in early April to put our names on the books for the class. Our priest had told us they fill up early, which is why I called more than a month in advance. Having left a message, I called back the next week, since I hadn’t been called back yet. The girl answering the phone said they don’t have their list yet, and they’ll call back.

Apparently, I have a trust issue, since I called the following week after that–and again, the list hadn’t been made and they’d call me back. Finally, three weeks after calling them we are booked. happy It’s really a relief to know that the class has been booked–now I can go back to worrying about what they’ll ask me.

Here it is, in all its Churchy goodness:

For those of you marrying in the Church, what kinds of classes are you taking? Are you nervous, too?

We are getting married in one of the three or four churches I love to look at. Our pastor is doing one on one sessions with us. We go about once a month and each time I just pray that neither of us will say anything too silly during our sessions. So far so good!

The Catholic Engaged Encounter was a good experience. You could end up with a touchy-feely couple or two that gives way to TMI about themselves, so my only suggestion is to refresh in advance in private the pact of what you are and aren’t willing to discuss in front of other people. Some of those TMI couples were obviously not in agreement (one private person, one open person) but once the cat is out of the bag it just left the other person squirming… painful to watch!

My fiance and I are doing 4 premarital counseling sessions one on one with the pastor. I’m excited. Maybe he’ll be able to think of some stuff that we haven’t discussed.

I was raised in a Catholic family, but my fiance and I are getting married in his church which is protestant. My aunt must have been a bit upset by this because as an engagement gift, she gave me a book called “Lies at the Altar” hahaha! She intended it to take the place of the pre-marriage classes, since we aren’t required to do that at his church.

The book is supposed to walk you through the same sorts of issues that the classes cover… I haven’t read it yet, but I suppose FI and I will look over it this summer. The title is funny, and somewhat disheartening, but I think it will be a good thing to read through together.

We did a large group pre-cana class with everyone else in the diocese who is getting married in the Catholic church. It was obvious that they had put a lot of time and thought into it, but part of it was a video program by Christopher West on the theology of the body that was a little too…um…”personal” for us. Also, they talked about the details of NFP. The parts about negotiating with each other and that sort of stuff were fine.

we had three “requirements” to fulfill to be married in the catholic church:
1) meeting with priest. we had to fill out the basic paperwork and take the FOCCUS test. at first, it seems like a compatibility test, but it’s really designed to identify areas that you and your future spouse haven’t yet discussed, or don’t agree about.
2) engaged encounter. we did this over 3 evening sessions rather than the usual weekend retreat. this was a fun, interactive experience. we were one of 5 couples. the areas of focus were communication, conflict resolution, finances, family, and religion.
3) natural family planning. omg. i have blog entries about each of the sessions we attended, but you GOTTA read this one!

We are required by my church to attend two pre-marital sessions, so we are doing it over one weekend since we both have finals coming up and can’t make it to my hometown during the week. Let’s just say that I’m nervous about it and praying he doesn’t ask us about our sex life…because I don’t know if I can lie to my pastor with good conscience!
