About Beehive

Beehive

April 26th, 2007 @ 4:41 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. jen would like to know about how much contact she should expect with her day-of-coordinator, before the her actual wedding. Will she provide a timeline? A template to modify? Can anyone speak from experience about what to expect?
  2. M knows it’s bad form to invite people to her bridal shower who won’t be invited to her wedding. However, her coworkers are throwing her a shower, and they want to invite other coworkers (not invited to the wedding). What should she do?
  3. gabs is looking for a reasonably priced photographer for engagement portraits in Orlando.
  4. Manda would like ideas for fun, inexpensive DIY favors that aren’t candy. She’s thinking of bookmarks and/or notepads. Any other suggestions?
  5. future mrs. j.o.b. DIY’ed her invites on word, but she has some questions about formatting. Can anyone help?

future mrs–If you can save the file as a pdf (or “print” to a pdf), that should maintain all the fonts and formatting. If that’s not an option, see if it will allow you to save as (or print to) a postscript or encapsulated postscript file. But a pdf is probably easiest for the printer.

future mrs. j.o.b -
you shouldn’t lose your word formatting as long as your printer has a compatible version of word. however, you need to make sure that the printer has your fonts. you can send them to him/her if they don’t.
the alternative is to print your document to a .pdf and give that file to your printer. that way you won’t have to worry about formatting or fonts or anything at all. if you don’t have a adobe acrobat, i’d be happy to do this for you. drop me an email if you’d like =)

Manda- Do you have a theme- color or otherwise you’re working with? How about budget?
Seed packets, individual potted herbs, candle/candle holders, small picture frames, small wallet size albums come to mind automatically.
If you want bookmarks- you can donate to charities usually and they’ll print the bookmarks for you and send them to you saying your names, wedding date, and that you donated to that charity. My sister did this with St Jude’s Children’s Hospital- go to http://www.stjude.org/weddings for more info.
I hope this helps!

Our colors are lavender, a deep sage green and cream and our budget will really vary depending on what we go for! Thanks for the ideas though! Keep ‘em coming! Lovin’ the charity idea!

5. future mrs j.o.b.,
Print your document to a pdf file before bringing it to the printer. That way you can ensure that no fonts or formatting are lost. If you don’t have a pdf printer there are free printers available online (try google searching it), and others that will do it for a nominal fee. Good luck!

My fiance and I are big kettle corn lovers so we’re buying huge bags of it and packaging it into smaller bags. It’s delicious and much cheaper than your conventional candy favors!

I have a question. Has anyone ever gotten their wedding party books on the subject? Like “The Idiot’s Guide to Being a Groom” or “Everything You Need to Know About Being a Bridesmaid” or “Mother of the Bride Guide”? I saw some cutes ones today but don’t want the following to happen:
1. They see it as a roundabout gift for me, instead of something they could use or would like.
2. It goes untouched, unappreciated, unused.

how do you find florists who use pesticide-free flowers (to put on a wedding cake)?

@ future mrs.job: like others have said, convert your word files to .pdf’s. talk with your printer first to make sure they’ll accept pdf’s. to convert them to pdfs, http://www.dopdf.com works perfectly. some fonts might not convert properly, in which case, your best bet will be to convert those to images.

heyjanety - You can find the polaroid guest books at adessoalbums.com Also, do a search on weddingbee for “adesso”. One of the bees used it for her wedding and blogged about it.

Manda-
If your colors are lavender and sage… how about sachets filled with just that- lavender and sage (not sure what sage smells like so maybe separate sachets ;) ). Or remember my idea of the potted herbs?
Candles that smell like lavender since it’s a stress relief thing…
Lavender soaps wrapped in organza bags - Yardley of London’s are the classic ones that smell SO good! But I bet you can get personalized ones out there.

If you’re loving the charity end of it- figure out which charity is important to the both of you and contact your local chapter- they will be able to give you ideas. FYI The Alzheimer’s Association’s color is purple so it could even color coordinate if this holds meaning for you.
Go here and scroll down: http://www.justgive.org/weddings/favors.jsp
Once you make the donation through their site to your charity, you email them your confirmation number and they send you a personalized PDF that you can print out.

M- i’ve been to 2 bridal showers put together at work. don’t worry about who’s invited. none of them expect to be invited. i did announce the chapel date and time so that if they wanted to, they can see me get married. i plan on having bottle water and cookies available…and everyone has told me to not bother and not to spend $ on that b/c they know how expensive everything adds up to be

Future Mrs J.O.B. - I did mine in a freeware photo-editor program I downloaded from CNET called GIMP. It’s got more fonts than most word processing programs, and you can do simple formatting like centering text, changing font size, colors, etc. I typed my text on a transparent layer over an 8.5″ x 11″ transparent background, then made three more copies of the layer and then arranged them so I could print 4 invites per page on laser-printer vellum from office depot.

Manda: This may be more expensive than you’re looking for, but Harney & Sons makes a white “wedding blend” tea that is really good (and really fragrant). You can stuff little organza bags with a handful of teabags for a cute favor.
In a completely different direction, I recently attended a wedding where they gave out mix cds of their favorite love songs.

Manda- I am doing tiny photo albums…

They aren’t quite like these (they have plastic sleeves), but, same size/idea:

OK, I just saw this… maybe rubber ducks make more sense as a favor for a baby shower than for a wedding… but how can I see a bride and groom duck and not think “cake topper”? http://www.orientaltrading.com/application?namespace=browse&origin=catalogProducts.jsp&event=link.itemDetails&demandPrefix=12&sku=16/780&prodCatId=377519&mode=Browsing&erec=5&sp=true&Ntk=all&Ntx=mode%252bmatchallpartial&N=377519&sd=BRIDE+AND+GROOM+RUBBER+DUCKYS
There are also rock star ducks, 50s ducks, military ducks, doctor and nurse ducks, ninja ducks, pirate ducks, cheerleader ducks, ducks in beanies, racing ducks, teacher ducks, luau ducks, and a Valentine’s ducks holding a dozen roses or a heart that says “be mine”

M - Don’t worry about a coworker thrown shower. In my office anytime someone gets married we all contribute to a gift and give the person a shower/lunch and there is never an expectation that we will all be invited.

M - the workplace is such a gray zone. :-( I am inviting 5 staff members from my school yet they always throw a psuedo school-wide shower and they absolutely insist. So in this case I think you can sit back and enjoy.

If you get the chance while celebrating (when they ask about the wedding) be sure to say “oh, we’re really excited and have been planning a smallish wedding at XXX location…” that could be your chance to emphasize in a not obvious way that you’re keeping it to close friends and family, even if that’s only mildly true, I would think. And of course, be extra gracious, too! :-)
