Beehive

April 27th, 2007 @ 4:16 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. kandaceandjason is thinking about getting the members of her wedding party a book like “The Idiot’s Guide to Being a Groom” or “Everything You Need to Know About Being a Bridesmaid”, but she’s afraid they’ll seem like an inappropriate gift. Or just go unused. Thoughts?
  2. Christine would like to know how to find florists who use pesticide-free flowers (for her wedding cake).
  3. heyjanety is looking for a Polaroid guest book–can anyone help? Or if she can’t find one, does anyone have suggestions for making one?
  4. 2007Bride is on the hunt for a brown/light brown-tone brooch for her bridesmaids. Anyone have website recommendations, or know someone who can custom create one?
  5. sassii wants to make votive placecards, and is wondering if anyone made them using clear labels instead of paper? Did any guests mention that they were hard to read or that it took a long time to find their candles?

1. kandaceandjason- If I were a bridesmaid (and I have been a few times) wouldn’t like getting that as a gift but that is just me. But if you feel like your weding party is a little lost on what to do, well then by all means I think that would be an ok gift. But just know that some may think you don’t think they are doing a good job at their ‘duties” and may be hurt.

1. My MOH had never been in a wedding before and kept telling me how clueless she was about what she was supposed to be doing. So, I got her The Bridesmaids Guide from the Knot, knowing she enjoys reading and knowing her well enough to know that this would be something she would enjoy. She read it right away and keeps referring to things she learned in it; it’s so cute! When she gets married and we reverse roles, she will pass the book back to me. Basically, I guess I’m trying to say, think about the person/people you are buying it for and imagine how you think they would react based on what you know about them.

For the polaroid guest book, the only ones i could find were the Adesso albums. You can find it right on their site or on Amazon.com. I just received my a few days ago and they are great quality! On the website, the blue is cheaper than the other colors- just fyi!

kandaceandjason - I personally would want more girly gifts. I would throw out the book if I received one.

heyjanety - Adesso makes polaroid guest books. You can also buy a Kolo guest book and add photo corners to your polaroids.

2007Bride - Have you checked whiteaisle.com or even Ebay.

heyjanety - Adesso makes special guestbooks that are exactly for the purpose of putting polaroid film in the slots and then the people can sign around it. There are no set lines for people to write and “Name ______” type of questions though. It is just a blank page with a slot for the picture but the covers can be customized I think. http://www.adessoalbums.com

kandaceandjason - I’m another “NO” vote for the guides. Unless you KNOW that no one will be offended (after all, you know the people in your wedding the best), it’s just too risky in my opinion. Even though one of my BM’s could probably totally use the book, I would never want to risk offending her. If I were a BM and received that book, there would be a little voice in my head wondering what my bride was trying to tell me, no matter how great of a job I was doing. IMO there are just so many better options.

1. Kandace-It may go unused and you would’ve $ on them. Most of our friends just asked us what we needed them to do.

2. Christine-That’s tricky. Even florists get their flowers from distributors and who knows if they use pesticides. Can you ask your baker to make flowers from sugar? Or use high end silks.

3. Janety-To make one, you can buy a scrapbook with blank pages. On the day of the wedding, you need an efficient assembly line and some good help. Guests can write a little message on pretty “index cards”. Someone can take the picture. Immediately stick the picture and index card onto the page using glue dots or removeable double sided tape if you want to readjust them later. Or file them in order so you know which pic goes with which index card.

4. 2007bride - Here’s 2 I found http://www.elegant-living.com/el_JFA-551363800.html

1. I’m with the others, unless they’ve been asking for guidance, don’t buy them a guide. Slightly offensive to tell them what their duties are. If you know they need a little help (i.e. they’ve asked you), I think it would be ok.

2. Do you live by a Whole Foods? Sometimes they sell edible flowers, and you could probably ask which of their flowers are not sprayed. The store by me sells absolutely gorgeous bouquets of flowers, and they seem like the type of place that might sell pesticide free stuff.

kandaceandjason — Your instinct is right — Books like that could definitely backfire, 1) because they might infer you think they are clueless and take offense, and 2) it’s not so much a gift for them as for the couple who wants their day to go well.

But if you want to offer something funny about weddings, maybe forward a funny link, like bridezilla stories and promise them you don’t intend to be one — should bring a smile and they’ll gush about how you aren’t a bridezilla! Anyone in your wedding party who is clueless about their duties then might think to look online for guidance or ask you.

kandaceandjason-I gave one to my maid of honor and she loved it!!! She was so excited and she would call me randomly to tell me things she read in it (and she took it when we went dress shopping and I would hear her telling sales ladies things it said). However, I am the first one of my friends to get married so this was the first wedding my bridesmaids had ever been in. Plus, she has been my best friend forever, so I knew this would fit her personality (she loves how-to books and takes her duties as maid of honor very very seriously). I didn’t give my other bridesmaids any books like that because they would have never read them or just made fun of the tips inside.

3 - we got our guestbook from http://www.guestbookstore.com they have polaroid ones, however the one we used didnt. they are a different approach to your typical guestbook. our guests loved them, and it was a lot of fun to see the sketches and suggestions that people made.

Christine–this might sound too easy, but I would expect that you could just tell your florist you need pesticide-free flowers for the cake. That’s all we had to do.

I have a few questions: I think I would love a birdcage veil. I don’t love the ones I have seen on ebay as I want something more “off the face” and less “caging the face in.” My dress is tea length and fun and I think a birdcage veil would complement it. Any hints on where to look in NYC or on-line? Any thoughts on whether birdcage veils are advisable or a big no-no for any reason?

Second question: My fiance and I are forgoing the traditional wedding reception “events” such as the bouquet toss and cake cutting (we’re having cupcakes). Any thoughts on whether we should have timed “events” to keep the guests entertained, and if so, what those would be (we don’t want to do a first dance either as we both have left feet, but we have been informed that it is a “must” and that the guests “will expect it.”)

Another question - does anyone have any suggestions on where to go to find model “orders of ceremony”? I’m meeting with the minister (our cousin!) to plan out the ceremony but am clueless as to where to start planning. Thoughts on webpages, books, etc?

If you have to do try your local organic farmers market, try local harvest.org, or your local health food store for suggestions

I think the local organic farmer’s market is a good choice because organic farmer’s seem to have a local network about who is doing what. This has been my experience with my local CSA (community supported agriculture) and farmer’s market.

3- you could buy an album just about anywhere that has a spot to slide in the photo then several lines next to it to write something. hallmark sells them, Walmart, target, kohls, etc. it might be cheaper, its what I’m considering doing currently.

2007Bride-

I design jewelry and accessories, and would be happy to work with you to create a brooch for your maids. You can view some of my work at http://www.RedotDesigns.com. We handcraft and customize everything in whatever color/metal combo you want. I actually have a photo of a gorgeous pearl/crystal brooch that we could make in your colors. You can email me through the site if you are interested!

heyjanety - I’m doing the polaroid guestbook too and i just bought a regular scrapbook and i’m going to put photo corner stickers so the guests can insert the pictures after.

Beehive question: Anyone know where i can buy Polaroid cameras for cheap? Any past brides selling theirs?
