That’s AUNT Kiwi To You!

April 27th, 2007 @ 3:49 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

Miss Bluebell’s family post made me think, for those of you who have future nieces and nephews, how are they going to refer to you? I’m pondering this because although Grandma Kiwi calls me “Aunt Kiwi” to my future nephews and niece–they seem to just take to calling me “Kiwi”. It’s too bad because I want to be someone’s aunt! I LOVE the idea!

I’ve been around them almost four years–the youngest are turning four this year, so it’s almost been since birth. Unfortunately, they’ve grown up calling me “Kiwi”, and the transition from “Kiwi” to “Aunt Kiwi” isn’t going to be easy. Mr. Kiwi, their blood uncle, has always been “Uncle Kiwi”. The same with the other in-laws; all kids were born at the same time (two are now six, and two are now four), amazingly. At one point, I was “Uncle Kiwi”, too. Fun. laughin05

So, while I’d love to be “Aunt Kiwi”, I think I may have to get used to being “Kiwi” forever. How are you dealing with this?

Not even an issue - we’ll be married before there are any kiddies in the family! There are no young’uns yet since I’m the oldest child in my family and my fiance is the oldest in his. So none of our siblings are quite at the child-bearing stage just yet.

We would like to be Auntie Laura and Uncle Chris though :)

Funny…my dad had the opposite issue with my cousins. Their parents insisted they call him “Uncle David,” which drove him up the wall…so he started telling them, “My name is just Dave!” Well, you can imagine what then happened…yup…for years, my dad was “Just Dave.” We still have a picture that one of my cousins drew that says, “To Just Dave.” Sorry…not really related…but hope this makes you smile a bit!

It’s all about the Breen today isn’t it! :P

I am Aunt Anooduh. Sometimes they slip and actually call me Miss Anooduh like their teachers at pre-school. Sometimes they just call me plain ole Anoooduh

I’ve known my FI’s sister for years and, therefore, his neice and nephew since they were born. They’ve always called me “Miss Lucy” and my FBIL has said that I’ll always be Miss Lucy. It’s kind of sweet, actually.

As a child I was all of a sudden people neice and I still to this day don’d call them aunt/ Uncle. I do have a nickname for my Aunt Samantha. I call her Sammy. But I am so thankful my future neice is only 1 so I will be Auntie bliss right away.

We only have one little one between our two families and that’s his nephew. I’ve been there since he was born but he’s never been able to pronounce my full name, so it’s been shortened to “Tina”. And now when his mother is speaking to him and refers to me, she calls me “Auntie Tina”. But in his 3-year old mind, I will always be just plain “Tina” and that’s fine with me!

We only have one niece right now, my oldest brother’s daughter and also one of our FGs. She picked up calling FI Uncle like it was second nature; she is five years old. We have a nephew coming in August (also from my oldest brother), so FI and I will already be married at that time and he will grow up knowing us as Uncle and Aunt.

I LOVE my fiance’s niece and nephew and was excited about the thought of being their auntie. As soon as we got engaged, my fiance immediately and deliberately referred to me as Aunt Jann in front of the kids every opportunity he gets. His family picked up on it and everyone started doing the same. This got the kids used to the name and the idea, and now I’m Aunt Jann almost all the time. The other day when the kids’ grandpa was jokingly responding to a smart comment I made with ‘Hey you better watch it woman!’, Emma responded with ‘Hey! Don’t you call Aunt Jann a woman!’ It’s the cutest thing I’ve ever heard from a 5 year old.

no nieces or nephews to speak of, but my cousin’s daughter (what would that be? something once removed i guess) calls me just by my first name but she calls my FH “uncle phil” then she decided to start calling him bonky-head because he always bounces her ball off his head when they play catch so now we are Myste & Uncle Bonky-head

i have asked her if she thinks i am her aunt and she says no, and i ask why she calls phil “uncle bonky-head” and she says “because that’s his name.” enough said. no sense arguing with a 6 year old.

when my sister had her first son, i was only 15 so i refused to go by “aunt” so he’s grown up just calling me by my first name. his subsequent sisters [born after i turned 20] and they all call me “aunt”. in fact, the oldest girl yells at him for not calling me “aunt”! eventually we’ll have to transition him to “aunt” but at 11 years old does it really matter? i’m not phased since i don’t call my dad’s sisters “aunt” [except for one] but i do call my mom’s sisters “aunt”

but i’m officially aunt tea. hehe. auntie. sorry, i’m easily amused

We became an “aunt” and “uncle” about a month before our wedding. It’s my brother’s son but he’s too young to talk still so who knows what he will end up calling us. I honestly don’t have a preference either way but I love hanging with my baby nephew!

I’ve always called my aunts and uncles by their first names — and my FI’s nieces and nephews call him by his family’s nickname for him. I think it must just vary by family — I wouldn’t like to be called Aunt Ellen, I’d feel old or that it would sound too formal and I want to be more of a big sister (which is how my aunts were to me).

Ellen’s right, it differs by family. In most Asian families, respect is a huge thing and it is a big no-no to address a superior (either in age, generation, profession, etc.) by his/her first name. In my family, it was even frowned upon to address an older cousin by his/her first name.

However, I know that my SO, who is 4th generation Asian (so he’s basically American), addresses his aunts and uncles by their first names and his cousins address his parents by their first names.

Because of the way I was raised, I addressed his parents by “Mr. & Mrs. So-and-so” but he’s like, just call them by their first names! It makes me a teeny bit uncomfortable to do so, but I think I’ll eventually get used to it. ;)

I like being called aunt or auntie Kimmie, I don’t like his nieces and nephews calling by my first name only. I usually correct them and say I’m not your classmate so don’t call me Kimmie. I’m a meanie huh?

i can’t wait to be an aunt! i joke that my future nieces are the reason i stayed with my guy, i love them so much.
both of my future nieces will be under 6 so i think i have a chance of transitioning them to aunt.

same issue, i find that it’s easier to turn the ones that are born later and make them use the aunt name. i don’t think i’ll have any luck getting my 8 nieces and nephews to call me aunt since we all grew up together. But i do like the fact that when asked who’s their favorite aunt. They ALL reply me:)

Out of my 10 nieces and nephews (ages 18-3) only 3 refer to me by Aunt and that’s because their Dad makes them. Personally I don’t feel the need to be called by my “title” we’re friends but there’s never a doubt that I’m an authority figure and must be respected when it comes down to it.
Maybe it’s because I’ve been an Aunt since I was 9 but it just sounds weird when I hear Aunt Becky.

I sort of have the opposite issue–I have a bunch of nieces and nephews who already call me “Aunt Pencils,” but I’d love for them to call my fiance “Uncle Pencils” after the wedding. But I don’t think they will. :( His niece and nephews, however, already call me “aunt,” which is so sweet.
