Speaking of LOTR, here’s my preeeecious (taunting Miss Lemon with my Smeagol voice)
After we got engaged, I spent every waking second staring at my engagement ring. While my professors rambled away about thermal boundary layers, I sat at my desk, head tilted to one side adjusting my ring until the stone was perfectly centered on my finger. One day on WMMR 93.3 (That’s office!), a girl called in and said, “To the girl who sits in class and stares at her ring all day long. It’s not that big anyway!”
Whoa, beotch, chu talkin’ to me?!! ![]()
She could have been refering to anyone, but then I became really self conscious. Just for sh*ts n giggles, I wanted to call in and say, Why are you staring at me anyway?! Pay attention to the lesson. Back in class, I looked around to see who it could have possible have been. Who is it that is out to get me? I fantasized about if I knew who she was, I would try to shine my ring and reflect the light in her eye to annoy her.
Sigghh I amuse myself.
Oh man, i stare at my ring in class and at work. lol. Everytime I look down and see it on my finger I smile because I think..”wow, I’m really engaged! it wasn’t just a dream!”
One time a girl came up to me and said..”Are you recently engaged?” And I said, “Yes, I am!” She giggled and said she could telll because I was staring at my ring during the whole class and she was the same way. hehe.
Ahahah I love it! Sarah, you do that too?!!
It will catch me by surprise in the car and then I’ll sit there and just move by hand around and around to move the facets of light around. ahahahah
sounds like someone is jealous of your incredibly beautiful ring!!!
Obviously that person has never had a diamond on her finger. There is something about one that requires staring - I think even a chip would have the same effect. So stare away!
That’s funny how you mention noticing it while you’re driving. When I got engaged, one of my newly married girlfriends said the same thing.
I also do catch myself looking at it at work, home, just about anywhere. My fiance says he loves that I look at it so much because I don’t usually wear jewelry. He was afraid I would never wear it…nope…not happening. I feel naked without it now.
Oh yeah. The fascination of the sparkle never gets old. I try not to make it too obvious when I am enjoying it. (Legally Blonde movie — “She’s got the 6-carat Harry Winston on her bony unpolished finger!”) No, that’s not what my ring is.
Anyone have good tips on how to keep the engagement ring clean and shiny?
Iris - Mr. SP bought me a cleanser. I’ll also brush it with toothpaste and that seems to work very well. Every once in a while (but not often enough) Mr. SP forces me to take it to our jeweler to have it cleaned and to check the settings. That’s always the best.
For Sarah–maybe your co-worker is left-handed? I do a lot of things with my left-hand (okay, maybe not walk around in a backwards pledge of allegiance stance) but it’s not b/c I’m trying to flaunt my ring. It’s because if I want to adjust my hair or scratch my neck, my left hand is the one I’m going to use naturally.
And Miss Snowpea, that is a ROCK! I’d be staring at it too from the row behind you!! ![]()
i use a toothbrush or a nail brush with some handsoap (make sure you keep the drain stopped!!) and hot water and it works really well. of course, not as good as a good steam bath from your jeweler. be careful where you go though - i’ve gotten warnings from some family to make sure that they clean it in front of you - if you don’t know the jeweler for all you know they could take it in the back and switch out the rock for a different one on you.
My mom used to tell me that too, but we know our jeweler. You should never NEED to leave your ring with them. It takes 2 seconds to steam it.
Jen - I think you and I have the same middle name! Or Chinese name actually.
J - The only thing that’s changed is I don’t push open a door with my fist anymore. I leave all my fingers spread open because I am afraid to knock the stone out.
J–nope, she’s a righty. If you’d seen the “walking around with hand on chest” move, there would be no doubt in your mind what her goals were with that pose.
For the record, I’m also a lefty. Therefore we must team up to bend society to our whim! Mwahaha!
iris - if you don’t pave, i suggest using an ultrasonic cleaner. i have one and it rocks! if you do have pave, use dishwashing liquid along with a soft brush (like a soft toothbrush).
Mine has a basket setting, so I use a pipe cleaner to get up and underneath to clean. I use the cleanser with a brush too.
Also the ultrasonic, as mentioned is great.
My jeweler said to avoid getting chlorine on it so no swimming (what am I going to do this summer?!?)
heh. i still stare at my ring every spare moment i get. it’s totally normal. lol.
I clean my ring on my jeans. I’m klassy like that.
I also have the cleaner, and would get an US, but the little diamonds are so tiny- I’m scared. And, let me say… RADIANTS UNITE! (Picture me sticking my fist out like some comic superhero). I think my diamond is your diamond’s baby.
Hmmm, I’m left handed so I do everything with my left hand, I hope that people don’t think I’m trying to show off my ring too much…. it never even dawned on me.
And I’m sure this won’t apply to most of you, but if you just happen to be a scientist and work in a drug discovery laboratory and have a sonicator… they are the BEST THING EVER for cleaning rings. Waaay better than what the jeweler does or an ultrasonic cleaning that you can purchase from home. Whenever I’m in the lab alone I drop my rings in, and boy do they sparkle! If it wasn’t for the $35,000 price tag, I’d purchase one for my home.
I am constantly staring at my ring, I feel so bad because its so close to finals and I haven’t heard a word my professors have said. Whenever I am somewhere with good lighting I slightly turn my ring back and forth to catch the light and make it sparkle even more. I am such a dork.
***RADIANTS UNITE*** Super hero Miss Kiwi and side kick Miss Snow Pea go out to defend all girls who stare at their rings alike. Left handed right handed no ring too big or small. dun dun dun duuuunn
It’s just a little over a carat. The picture is deceiving because I have small fingers and it was a weird (apparantly good) angle. I should’ve added a note “Images may be smaller than they appear” wait. Is it that right? I must be quoting it wrong. OH well.
My college roommate got engaged the day before her birthday senior year. She was driving across town the next afternoon, staring at her ring, and got a speeding ticket. She didn’t even notice the cop for a while!!
Wow Miss Snow Pea, I would have guessed it to be much larger from the picture. I have very small hands as well so I agree that it definitely makes the diamond seem bigger.
Mine center stone is just over 1.5 cts and I have two side stones .5 cts each… but from the picture, your ring looks much, much bigger. I think side stones take away from the center diamond… don’t get me wrong, I love my ring, but I think solitaires are more striking.
I do love the cut of your ring - I’ve always been a fan of emeralds and thought that was what I wanted.. until I discovered the asscher (aka square emerald) which is what I have.
JULIE - I HAVE ACCESS TO A SONICATOR!!! I have to try that now. I am actually heading over to the lab later. The lab is a combination of the Civil/Struc dept and the Mech/Thermo dept. It’s the thermo lab that has it.
I debated having side stones but I agree, the center stone looked suffocated. My setting has alot to do with it too. It sits up higher. It’s a knock off of Tiffany’s lucida. I love the Asscher cut!!!!
Ooooh the taunting… make it stop — make it stop!!!
On another note… I stare at my ring all the time… and some of the best light comes when I’m driving… how horrible is that??
See, now you guys know why I don’t drive- I have no attention span for things that don’t shine on my finger!
Yeah, I loved the emerald shape with the cut corners, but I wanted sparkle! Then I saw Miss Bluebell’s kickass cushion and I want THAT.
Alright, Sarah, you’re on! I love when my fiance accidentally picks up my left-handed scissors. I chuckle at his look of discomfort–that’s for all the punch bowl ladles that have caused me such anguish over the years!
I’ve heard (I think actually on weddingbee!) that your dentist can clean your ring in a special machine they have. I haven’t asked mine, though!
Your rock looks like 2 carats, not 1 carat! It’s gorgeous! On another note, I stare at my ring all the time. It especially looks nice in dimly lit restaurants and elevators which reminds of the lighting at Tiffany’s.
Now see, why didn’t they think to encrust the road with diamonds. Then we would all drive better. This is why women need to run the world. (Miss Kiwi, I don’t blame you for not wanting to drive in LA)
I like the cushion cut too. I like any antique cut or style ring.
your ring is BLINGED OUT!!! yowza!!
it looks HUGE! very pretty!!!
(i can’t believe it’s a little over a carat…b/c yours looks looks like 5x bigger than mine?!!)
i used to wake up every morning and just gaze at my e-ring for minutes…(this is when we first got engaged)…it has subsided since then.. but i still stare at it when i’m bored in class ![]()
I have a request for all the weddingbee’s… can there be one post with all of your engagement rings?
Miss Snow Pea-
Definitely try sonicating it! Do you have the water bath variety or the kind that you have to attach a conical tube and hold in place? If you have the water bath kind, just stick your ring in a little beaker with a tiny bit of soap, and leave it in the sonicator for 20 minutes or so. All the dirt and grime will definitely be gone! You’ll have to let me know how it works out for you.
My ring is looking a little dull these days, but I think it’s because the platinum band is getting all scratched up and the sonicator can’t fix that…
And I had no idea what a goose chase I was sending my fiance on when I said I liked asschers… they are much rarer than I thought.
Oh, look at the pretty shiny-shiny-bling-bling! And I dig your polish, too. Brings out *extra* blingage!
i was thinking about looking at your ring while driving.. i like to look at how it reflect in the window on the driver’s side window. someday i’m going to get into an accident because i’ll be too busy staring at it going “ooh pretty”

CC - We can ask Miss Lovebug about that.
Julie - I’ll find out today. I’ll have to take pictures and write a post about it. kekeke I can’t believe you have 2 side stones too…that was the hard part. I didn’t realize that the jeweler would actually have take so much time out to find 2 matching stones. Asscher and emerald cuts are most difficult to find matches for.
Snot - Pleeeease drive safe! it’s rainy out.
Uhmmmm.. I’m a leftie so I do lots of things with my left hand, even when I use my hand to prop up my chin, I use my left hand. I hope nobody thinks I’m showing off :-P.
Beautiful rock you got Miss Snow Pea! Simply amazing! He did good he did good! Small finger really are an advantage. I’ve noticed that with my friends and the rocks look huge on them even though my rock is bigger. Damn my non-dainty fingers :-D.
Yes, it took a long time to get the side stones, or so I was told. I didn’t know what kind of ring my fiance had picked out, but I knew when he ordered it, and I knew when he picked it up…. and I was surprised at the length it took. Later, I found out it was because he had to get multiple shipments of asschers in to find ones that matched.
The jeweler suggested getting a wedding band set the whole way around with tiny asscher cut stones… my fiance saw the CZ sample of it and said it looked amazing with my engagement ring, but I can’t imagine the cost! It kind of seems silly that my engagement ring was so very expensive, and then to spend a fortune on a wedding band, when I will probably just wind up destroying them when I spill acid all over myself one of these days… :-\
miss snow pea… i can’t believe your ring is “a little over a carat”?? exactly how much over?? omigooodness, either your have a very small hand or you took that photo at a very good angle!
i have a promise ring (an eternity band) from my bf and i stare at it all the time!! can’t wait for the actual engagement ring itself!! i noticed that my ring looks especially shiny under direct artificial light from overhead. in my elevator, especially!!
Oh yeah, I looked at an all around radiant cut band and it was amazing, but would cost more than my e-ring. Actually I found that it also was “competing” with my e-ring too much so I actually went with a super thin pave (round) band which compliments it much better.
I should have used a more accurate picture. I noticed that when I take pictures of my ring in direct sunlight outdoors, it makes the diamond look “fuzzier” therefore making appear larger than it is. It apparantly was a VERY good angle. lol
Wait..did I just give myself away into admitting that I take numerous pictures of my ring indoors and out. ![]()
Oohh Oohh I have an asscher!! And my ring is modeled after Tiffany’s Legacy… She’s a beaut and also very stareworthy!
More than lighting itself, I play with hand-positiong during work LOL… and since I’m forever in front of a computer screen and tickering away on a keyboard, my typing techniques have been adapted to fit that of how much light my diamond catches with each keystroke… yes my highschool computer teacher would certainly take a ruler to my hands but not before I blind her with my bling– she won’t even know what hit her!
Haha, I love you guys… you entertain me all day long and reassure me that I’m not crazy–
I’m not the only one that is hypnotized by my e-ring,
I’m not the only one that get’s honked at while driving because I don’t notice that the light has since turned green as I gaze into the rainbow flecks on my dashboard,
and I’m not the only one that makes sure my ring is always centered on my finger,
and I’m not the only one who makes their FI kiss the e-ring (a la mobster family) upon greeting me…. everyone does that?
Right?!?!?!
my jeweler said he wasn’t a fan of the sonic and vibrating cleaners since they may, over time, loosen the prongs. he says plain old detergent works as well as anything! i trust him, he and my FH created an amazing ring for me. :=)
oh, one more slightly silly detail to add… FH is the one who’s always staring at my ring! it’s almost weird. especially in lighting conditions where it’s really blingy, he’ll grab my hand, look at it for a few moments and say “your ring looks beautiful in this light.” lol. he’s so cute.
What a funny post… yes, I too am guilty of staring at my ring (and trying to stare at other peoples rings, hahaha). I’ve noticed that lighting makes a HUGE difference in terms of blingage. The flourescent lights in my office don’t do much for my ring. However, spotlights and can lighting make my ring *magical* puahaha.
I’m guilty of missing the freeway exit because I was admiring my ring while driving. ![]()
I pick up WMMR on the radio in the car! I like looking at my ring too…
Amanda- Thank you!!! Someone FINALLY got my “that’s office!” shout out!!! ahahaha

I’d much rather people stare at their rings than obnoxiously flaunt it in others’ faces. Of the six work engagements in the past year, there was one girl who found some reason to fix her bangs with her left hand, chew a fingernail on her left hand, scratch her neck with her left hand, ANYTHING to get that ring out there for people to see. At one point she was just walking around with her hand on her chest, like a backwards pledge of allegiance. What made it especially uncool was that her fiancee’s previous long-term girlfriend worked with us as well. Whether it was intended as a “I got the man and you didn’t” gesture or not, that’s sure what it looked like.
That being said, I love it when a flash from my ring catches me off-guard, which often happens while driving on sunny days. I am much more patient in traffic when I can fiddle with the ring and flash reflections all around the car.
