200 and 300-400 Calorie Meals

April 30th, 2007 @ 5:59 pm by Mrs. Bee

These Pictures of 200 Calories of Various Foods were making the blog circuit a couple of weeks ago. Since I’m not very good at estimating calories, I thought it was a great way to see what 200 calories actually looks like when comparing healthy food and junk food.

Last week Lifehacker linked to pictures of 300 - 400 calorie meals to give you an idea of portion size. Don’t these meals look tasty? You could eat 3 of these meals plus a 200 calorie snack and still consume only about 1200 calories per day.

What has been your most effective food strategy when dieting? Reducing caloric intake? Eating healthier? Eliminating certain foods from your diet? Eating smaller, more frequent meals?

Is it wrong that I would choose two servings of fries and one serving of chocolate for my 1200 calories? French fries are the bane of my existence.

I always need to add fresh fruits and vegetables. Even when I’m eating my healthiest, I’m not getting anywhere near as many veggies as I should. If only they weren’t so darn inconvenient compared to…y’know…convenience foods.

I looked at this entry and thought “mmm M&M’s”. So I went and ate some. Wasn’t exactly their point, was it?

Honestly, 1,200 cals is a bit too little…it all depends on your weight, though. I lost 70 pounds on the South Beach Diet. I reccommend it totally.

This is what I did and I lost 14 lbs in one month.

Cut out soda and juice. Drank a lot of water and tea. I drink coffee occasionally. Ate cereal/yogurt/tea OR cereal/fruit/tea for breakfast, a turkey or Peanut Butter sandwich for lunch on whole wheat bread and a Slim Fast shake, snack on fruits or nuts, and eat a sensible dinner. Blackberries are good for dessert.

I also do ab exercises almost every day, see my trainer once a week, and do the elliptical for 20 minutes a couple times a week.

My trainer says I need to eat more fats and protein. He recommends cottage cheese (yuck), nuts, eggs, and even fish oil supplements. He even recommended adding olive oil to my turkey sandwiches.

I just cut out the sweets and started eating smaller more frequent healthier meals. I was a big junk foodie back in the day. While the scale says I haven’t lost any weight (nor gained any) my body’s shape has changed. I recently started doing a couple different workout videos a couple times a week plus power walking for at least an hour a week. Hopefully, some of those inches will start to disappear!

less calories or more exercising. it doesn’t matter how you do it–smaller meals, healthier food, jogging, etc. You have to burn more calories than you take in if you want to lose weight.

I did the WW/Points Plan and I have lost A LOT of weight. I am not sure how much, I don’t have a scale at home, although the scale at the gym shows about 20+ pounds.

I would try to keep the points low during the day, like under 5 points until 5pm so I could use them up at night without exceeding the 20 points. Tons of raw vegetables like baby carrots, celery… allow myself to eat as much of that as I wanted, really.

Interesting. Slate just had an article on calorie restriction.

1200 might be too low depending on the person, but thanks for the link! It’s helpful to see what real amounts are esp. when so many restaurant dishes etc. are super-sized.

I’ve reduced calorie intake, eat healthier food, and make sure I burn around 2000 calories a week.

My mom used to swear by WW, but she wasn’t losing weight lately. I FINALLY convinced her to count calories and you know what? She’s finally losing weight, and after all fo these years she said…”you were right!”

Ha! I love it! : )

(she wasn’t eating enough on WW…it’s very easy to starve yourself on that program)

Snack literally throughout the day, but never meals (not even small portions). But always eat what you want, and very frequently (sounds easy but it takes a lot of discipline not to binge!). Eat a variety of foods. Diet Coke and Canada Dry to fill you up, and water. Actual foods to snack on all throughout the day: nuts and dried fruit, cereal, egg white omelettes, grilled chicken, hummus and veggies, cheese… and desserts! Remember to stay very active whether it’s just walking for half an hour, or hitting the gym.

I try to make my three meals about 400 calories (most of the time my breakfast is 200 cals and my lunch and dinner are 500 calories though) and I have a few snacks that are all under 100 calories and work out 3-5 times a week. So far it’s been working really well. I really want to look good in my wedding dress :-).

Haha Maybe its just me, but those pix of 300-400 calorie meals do NOT look appealing to me whatsoever! They look… boring, but maybe thats why I’m not losing weight hehe.

Mrs. Bee, I am a huge advocate of fish oil capsules!! A few years ago, I was breaking out like CRAZY, and I read something about fishoil, so I started taking it daily. My acne cleared up in 2-3 months. I still take it, but not with the same regularity. No strange side effects for me, but everyone reacts a bit differently. Its hard to say…

Mrs. Bee - I’ll have to ask my trainer if fish oil supplements make you go deuce. I know my FFIL is taking them and he hasn’t had any side effects. But then again he is a male so I’m sure the effects are different for men vs. women.

I started taking Cod Liver Oil about 8 months ago because I read that it helps regulate periods. It did do that, which is great, AND it helped clear up my skin, which is a lovely side effect. I haven’t had any, uh, digestive issues with it.
