About Beehive

Beehive

April 30th, 2007 @ 4:01 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. kp is looking for recommendations for a NY florist offering bargain prices for wedding flowers. She’s heard of Korean florists that offer packages between $1000 and $1500. Can anyone verify this, or suggest another “hidden find”?
  2. Summer Bride is on the hunt for a birdcage veil. She wants something “less cagey” and more “off the face” to go with her tea-length dress. Anyone know a good web vendor for something like this? Or any NYC girls know where to find one? Also, does anyone have any thoughts on whether birdcage veils are a good idea or a bad one?
  3. Also, Summer Bride is looking for suggestions on where to find sample “orders of ceremony”. She’s meeting with her officiant to plan out the ceremony, but she’s clueless as to where to start planning. Anyone know a good website or book for this?
  4. glass wants to know where she can find cheap Polaroid cameras–any former brides selling theirs?
  5. Ms. T has less than five months to find a wedding planner/designer in the NYC area for a not-so-traditional wedding. She doesn’t need a planner to book vendors, but rather to design and creatively coordinate her flowers/colors/themes/reception area. Can anyone recommend one?
  6. Ana’s sister bought her a dozen hot pink paper lanterns, but her wedding color is light pink. She doesn’t want to waste the lanterns, though, so she’s wondering if there’s any way to make them look lighter? Perhaps spray painting or adding flowers?
  7. Andria once saw a picture of decorated church pews, and is hoping to replicate them. A description of what she saw is here, and she’d love some help trying to figure out how to do it.
  8. Can anyone tell JennyGoLightly how to get a “thank you” list from her Crate and Barrel registry? She’s trying to figure out who bought what.
  9. Mee!! is wondering if anyone knows of any Monique Lhuillier rosette gowns (Spring 2005) for sale? Also, does anyone have pictures of a real bride wearing the rosette gown (the non-strapless version)? She has the stock photo from ML’s website, but she’d like to see real-life pictures so that she can have the dress recreated for her.
  10. Ciaobella is looking for information about honeymooning in South Africa in mid-September: Johannesburg or Capetown? Beach resorts? Travel website suggestions, anyone?

SummerBride–I know of only two online vendors of birdcage veils, and if you dig deep enough, they turn out to be the same company: somethingbold.com

If you have any access to a fabric store, you can get a yard of netting and use the pattern at this link…
http://vintagesewing.info/1950s/52-hmh/hmh-133.html
…to do a quick mockup of what a birdcage veil will look like.

As you might have guessed, this was my first choice of style, but I’m leaning toward vintage hats now instead. There are lots of vintage bridal or cocktail hats around, especially on eBay. Just another thing to think about.

Veil Recommendation

SummerBride — for veils, I had luck with Maria Banker. She can custom-make whatever you imagine. Very talented and let her chew over your idea and quote you a price — will likely be reasonable.

summerbride — order of service will vary greatly by religion, culture, etc. Can you provide more info?

Would a french manicure look funny with a red pedicure? I don’t normally have both done. But normally when I get manicures, I get light colors and when I get pedicures, I tend to pick brighter colors. Thoughts?

this not so much a question as a request–i was thinking that you should do a worst wedding etiquette post. I had a horrible one this weekend and I’d like to hear about others. It would make me feel better ;)

Ana-no idea how practical this idea is because I’ve never seen a paper lantern, nor do I know where you live, but if you could somehow leave the lanterns in the sun might they fade to a paler pink?

Summer - this is where i’m probably getting my birdcage veil:

Ana, spray painting would probably increase the lantern’s opacity, so this wouldn’t work if you intended to actually use the lanterns (rather than simply setting them out for decoration). Come to think of it, the spray paint may damage the lantern paper if it is very thin.

S — Brilliant idea about bleaching them in the sun! Might need to rotate them to get all sides, or go for a graduated fade. If they don’t fade evenly, hang them with the least attractive side up against the ceiling.

I have a question: anyone know where to get a platinum Novell wedding band at a discounted price, either online or in the NYC area? There’s a specific one I want, comfort fit, with a squared-off edge, in 4mm width. This, except this one is 3mm wide:

http://www.fortunoff.com/product.asp?pf%5Fid=571000439&index=2&corp%5Fgift=0&dept%5Fid=1060412

I know it looks like a lot of other rings, but the squared-off edge is quite uncommon in a non-flat ring. The Novell site only allows you to search three times. I love it and I don’t want to pay full price. And I need it soon, getting married in five weeks!

Summerbride — since it sounds like you’re in NYC, I recommend Bridal Veil Falls on 9th and A in the East Village. Margaret will custom-make anything you want and for a very competitive price.

First of, let me say that this site is fantastic and I apprciate ALL the help and ideas!

Second, I have a beehive question for the ribbonaholics: I am looking for the white ribbon w/black pioct edging used in MS Weddings Summer ‘06 issue on page 298 for the bouquet. I know nothing about ribbon so some help would be great! Thanks!

Summer Bride, i second Rebecca’s veil recommendation. Margaret of Bridal Veil Falls was one of my very favorite vendors. she really can and will do *anything* you want!!
just be sure and call for an appointment before you go. her hours vary a bit…

Ana, why not add a bit of decoration to the lanterns - maybe some (paper) flowers in the correct shade of pink? Look at it as another way to personalize the day. Every lantern could reflect something different about you as a couple.

I have a very low v-back dress and have been in search of a corset/bustier that will not show. Is there any out there? Please advise.

Thanks!

ana…don’t know how to make them lighter, but i too had light blush pink and green..then i went ribbon shopping and decided that the hot pink actually complemented the other 2 colors. so i use that trio of colors on my bubbles, favors, etc. BM’s are having light pink roses and hot pink ribbon for the bouquet.

kp:
Go to Darlene at Whole Foods in Columbus Circle. I shopped around for flowers and her prices were incredibly cheap and by far the cheapest I found. You can even get a discount if you buy your own vases instead of having them buy them.

glass, i got mine from ebay. i only paid $10(that also included the shipping). check out the people with good feedback AND a return policy. Sometimes asking friends will stir up all types of surprises.

jmnz–I have that issue, and there’s no ribbon on page 298. Maybe you have the wrong page or issue? Anyway, MS Weddings is pretty good about listing their sources in the back of the magazine in “the Guide.” Also, I’ve noticed that many of their ribbons are vintage and come from Tinsel Trading and their ribbon store, The Store Across the Street. That or M&J Trim, Mokuba, or Nicholas Kniel. Good luck.

Ciaobella, I lived in Johannesburg for a year (2003). While I love Joburg, I would suggest going on safari to Kruger Park. There are private game reserves that are part of the park, and I highly recommend Kings Camp. http://kingscamp.com/
I’ve been there twice and it is as dreamy as all of the descriptions on top ten lists of all time best honeymoon destinations. It is also pretty much the only way to drive off road (they take you on game drives in open air Land Rovers). Very romantic, incredible food, secluded. Don’t forget anti-malarials but you may be okay for September.

As for Cape Town, it is beautiful with Table Mountain and all, but go just north of CT to Montague. It is part of the wine route, I think. There is a wonderful resort there in a rather rural area. I remember that they had a bunch of interconnecting outdoor pools that are heated to various temperatures. I was there in 1998, but am having trouble locating the name.

Summerbride try http://www.myweddingveil.com

I think I’m going to use a more traditional veil for the ceremony and switch to the birdcage for the reception (less cumbersome). I’m definitely going to try to make my own first as a prototype, and then either order one from ebay or one of these websites. Good luck!

I’m looking for shoes for my flower girls. Their sizes are from baby size 3, toddler size10, and toddler size 11. And I am absolutely in love with the shoes pictured here:

http://usangels.com/images/catalog/full/432_G2_US_POB_FG_07S.jpg

seems easy enough to find… but I can’t seem to find them– and at a reasonable price at that! Please help!

Hello Bees - I have a question… We are working on our invitation design, and I need to know how to properly request the names of the +1’s?

We are having a formal seated dinner with place cards at each setting.

Do we just accept the +1 as is, and write “date of so-and-so” on the place card? Do we call each +1 offender to get the dates name? Do we put some special wording in our RSVP asking for the dates name? (Although, after todays post with the 40% return rate of RSVPs…)

What should we do?

Questions for the bees-

1) I’m definitely doing a candy buffet, but I’m having a hard time deciding what kind and how many containers to purchase to make it look nice. Does anyone have specific instructions as to how to vary the different types of containers, but still look good?

2) I was also looking for DIY instructions for cupcake towers. I really like one that is a 4 tier square that looks like its maybe wood, but I’m not sure I want to spend $300 on it.

3) Lastly, I was hoping for instructions for DIY card boxes.

Thanks!

cmg - that is exactly what i was looking for! the picture i saw and the look i want is quite a bit less elaborate that that one - but basically the instructions for the cone are what i needed! probably not that difficult but i could easily screw it up knowing some of the things i’ve done! thanks!

Thanks for all the veil tips! I’m actually having my dress made at Blue, which is right around the corner from Bridal Veil Falls - I had forgotten about that. I will check it out next time I go for a dress fitting!

Helllo Bees! Thank you so much for your help. All of them are extremely informative. I will try to put my lanterns under the sun and if that didnt work, I will either add flowers or use them and mix with light pink lanterns. Thanks for letting me know not to spray paint them =P

Thanks again and happy preps to the brides-to-be!
