Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. ivy is wondering whether a french manicure would look odd with a red pedicure. Opinions?
  2. Pencils is on the hunt for a platinum Novell wedding band at a discounted price, either online or in the NYC area. She’s looking for “comfort fit”, with a squared-off edge, in 4mm width. You can see a smaller, similar version here. Can anyone help her find the right one?
  3. jmnz is looking for the white ribbon with black picot edging used in Martha Stewart weddings Summer ‘06 issue (p. 298). She’s hoping some ribbonaholic out there can point here in the right direction!
  4. kandi needs a corset/bustier that won’t show beneath her very low v-back dress. Any suggestions?
  5. Karianna has an invitation etiquette question: how do you properly request the names of the “+1’s”? She’s not sure of the protocol for her formal, seated dinner. Read her full question here.
  6. 2007Bride is having a candy buffet, but she’s unsure how many containers to purchase to make it look nice. Anyone have advice about how to vary the types of containers and make it look good?
  7. Also, 2007Bride is looking for DIY instructions for cupcake towers, specifically for something square and 4-tiered (and preferrably that looks like wood?)
  8. 2007Bride was hoping to find instructions for DIY card boxes, too!
  9. Miss Bluebear is looking for websites that sell MOB outfits that have nice tops but pants for the bottom. Her FMIL is semi-handicapped and must wear pants for flexibility. Any suggestions?

Ivy–the only time I ever noticed a woman’s toenails didn’t match her fingernails was when my boss painted her toenails blue.

5. Karianna: you do the ” M_________ ” you will see it as an option on any invites you can order. People will fill in their names in the blank. If you need more information just call them. If they write “+1″ or “and guest” in there you would again have to call. I think on my reply cards most everyone wrote in the proper names.

Does anyone have any suggestions on websites for MOB outfits that have nice tops but pants for the bottom? My FMIL is semi-handicapped from a stroke and must wear pants for flexibility.

2007Bride - I asked a similar question in this beehive:

http://www.weddingbee.com/2007/04/06/beehive-146/#comments

I wound up buying a bunch of glass vases with openings wide enough that I could still put scoops in them (some people mentioned germs being a problem). I waited until Michael’s had a sale where their $4 vases were half off and I think I bought like 10 of them. I’m probably also going to make some type of display for lollipops (one of the bees suggested a test tube rack which was genius!)

This is a great website with lots of pictures of various options:

Get with me and maybe we can brainstorm together!!!

2007bride - I had 8 containers of varing heights for my candy buffet, 4 on each side. It worked out perfectly cause we had cheesecake petit fours in the center instead of a groom’s cake. Most of the glassware we purchased was from Michael’s. They have some really cool ones! My mom also had a few glass containers she had gotten from Southern Living Home. Our biggest container was a large cookie jar I got at Wal-mart. It held 15 pounds of chocolate covered almonds perfectly!

2007Bride: I’m using chinese take out boxes. I saw them at Micheal’s but ended buying them at Smart N’ Final. I’m going to decorate them with some custom stickers I ordered from Zazzle and ribbon. I’m having about 150 guests but will only put out about a third at a time. One of the servers will restock the table for us with supplies and candies so it always looks full.

Ivy — No problem, tres Francais! Tho I’m not crazy personally about a French manicure done with red nail tips… I can’t get over the idea that it looks like blood under the nail or something.

Ivy, a french mani with a red pedi will look hot. I say go for it!

Ivy - that is my standard look - I always do a french manicure with red toes.

Out of curiosity- what are some of the favors that brides are giving? We are doing travel candles- going with our travel themed wedding.

Miss Lime–thanks, but I’ve seen that site. In fact, we’re getting my fiance’s ring from there, the Newport platinum band, shiny on the edges, matte in the center. The one I want is that specific Novell band with the squared edges. Why doesn’t any jeweler have a rounded band with squared edges?? It’s the only one I’ve seen like that. I’m going to be stuck paying full price, which really sticks in my craw. :P

And Ivy–I almost always wear unmatching manis and pedis, generally the very light OPI Tutti Frutti Tonga on my hands, and an assortment of bright pink, raspberry, and garnet polishes on my toes.

Ivy - I dont think the combo would look weird at all..I think a french manicure would look elegant for closeups and with your bouuet, etc..and a red splash on your feet is fun!

Pencils - I would rec. that you head over to the Jewelry district in Manhattan and have a jeweler order it for you or replicate it at a discounted price. Remember to negotiate..if things don’t go your way, move to another booth. More often than not, the jeweler would opt to offer a lower price than lose you to anothe vendor. But you have to seem like a serious buyer~

JMNZ - I think there was a post a few weeks ago about Ribbon stores in NYC..maybe you can order them over the phone/online if you’re not from nyc..or call them to see if they even have it.

Kandi - there are bustiers/corsets that will work with low v-backs…they usually have a low dropped back..swing by any department store to see if they have it or a undergarment specialty store..

2007 Bride - I would use containers that have different widths and heights, especially since each candy has its own specific shape, size, and texture.

Miss Bluebear - I’d check out Nordstrom.com for special occasion sets. :)

What to do about a wedding planner who tells you venues are booked, but when you double-check one or two places, you find out that they aren’t? I’m very concerned.

hi all,

i have a two piece wedding dress and i need to get alterations done for my dress. its going to be fairly easy to do my alterations because they seamstress can take in my dress from the skirt portion, leaving the tail to be beautiful, BUT does anyone have any recommendations on where i can go in the NYC for alterations? Thanks!!!

For 2007Bride and anyone interested in candy buffets… I spent about three hours tonight searching different bulk candy websites and doing price comparisons. I made a nice little spreadsheet in Excel if anyone wants it. My wedding colors are purple and white, so those are the candies I looked for, but many of them also came in other colors with identical or very similar price tags. If anyone wants this spreadsheet I’d be happy to put my time to good use!!!

ivy - I did exactly that for my bridal portrait - although I liked it (it’s what I do day to day), I think the red was a bit harsh under all that white/ivory and will be doing a more “natural” pedicure on the day of :) buttt it’s all up to personal preference.

I think if your dress has some color or if your bouquet/lipstick is red, then go for it!
