Tablescaping, Using The Walls

May 1st, 2007 @ 5:24 pm by Mrs. Lime

I am basing my tablescape on Martha’s famous red + aqua spread:

(from MS Weddings, Summer 2006)

However, I of course need the contemporary, less fussy version. Sorry to you bird-theme lovers out there, but I have this weird aversion to birds (more live ones than the cute ones found in wedding decor) that Mr. Lime can attest to. He’s seen me scream like a little girl running from birds. And it has nothing to do with the Hitchcock film, as I’ve never seen it. Anyway, I digress.

I will have a similar centerpiece, as I blogged about previously. Cheapo me will have basic, white linens. I can also get red napkins for no extra charge from my caterer. They will instead be folded in a simple, square pocket fold into which we will tuck our favors (which will be flat and square-ish).

Since I will have round tables rather than square, I figured some sort of aqua runner would work better than a square “placemat” of sorts, as Martha has shown here. I also wanted something a little special. Something with a fun pattern. Something with interesting texture. Did I mention I can’t sew to save my life? Even with Stitch Witchery? Nor do I have the budget to rent them from a speciality linen rental place such as BBJ Linen or Wildflower Linen (most of their selections are too fussy for me anyhow. Hmph. I’m just really jealous of their product, deep down winky02). I am, however, quite good with an X-acto knife. I have even learned how to operate one quite precisely even after having no sleep for days straight, although I also would say, “Don’t try this at home.”

One day, I happened upon the first wallpaper pictured. The second pattern’s sample was close behind. I had a brilliant idea to custom color the second pattern with the colors in the first sample. I received a prompt quote, which dashed my dreams of the perfect shade of aqua, fun circles of a medium size, and a pattern that was contemporary but not too trendy.

Thus began my search for commercial wallcovering (it comes double the width residential product does, is durable since it’s almost always vinyl, and usually well priced compared to even fabric). Here is my first short list. None of them were quite doing it for me, though. Please excuse the color shift and horrible photos taken not in natural daylight.

Try number two, from another manufacturer:

I also love the scale of the pattern and the circles themselves, of course, in this Maharam classic. Alas, the gray is too gray, and the blue too ice blue:

The search continues, but I’ve got to get the yardage ordered soon and cut up in time. As for the ribbon edging, we’ll see if I come up with the time and energy to do that. Lucky for me, these wallcoverings usually cut very cleanly with the correct care and blade. Any favorites, dear readers, in the context of my overall look + feel (from what little you’ve gleaned from my blogs, at least)?

I bow to your DIY skills. ***bow, bow*** I like option 1.

Since you know the Wedding Police will not come after you if you don’t have all identical centerpieces, you could use combinations of these. 1-2-3 or 1-3 could be nice together, and if 5 is in the same tone, a little funkiness here and there couldn’t hurt.

Thanks!

Good suggestion, Sarah. That was the original thought, but none of these are working together the way that I’d like. I would like some variation in texture and even tone/color, as long as they are compatible. Totally forgot to mention that. 1, 2, 3 could be good as they are all from the same line. hmmm…

hmmm….maybe I’m not understanding what you will be doing with the wallpaper (excuse my dumb moment) Will you be cutting a piece and then putting it into the center of the table - like an overlay? Sorry for my confusion but I’d really like to understand. My aunt offered to sew table runners for me, but I am a little shocked on the price of the fabric that I would like to use. So, any ideas (like this one) are great!

HamiHarri, I’m doing a long strip, like a runner. No square like Martha’s up there, and no overlay as the wallcovering won’t drape nicely at the corners like fabric would.

My tablecloths will probably be full length, but I might keep these runners 6-12″ above the ground. So for 60″ rounds, I will be cutting a long 13-14″ x 36-48″ rectangle, which will sit like a runner. Sorry if this isn’t making it any clearer. I will probably post pictures of my “cutting diagram” and a mockup while I am working on them.

I’d love to see a mock-up of this, as I have been mentally playing around with the same sort of idea. How wide does standard wallpaper come?

Yep, I’ll be mocking it up soon enough for you guys. No promises on a “due date,” as I’ve gotta get invites out first.

Residential products usually come 27″ wide in 5-10 yard rolls. Commercial products are usually 54″ wide, in 30 yard bolts. You can usually buy less than an entire bolt if you pay a per yard cut charge.

Ahh… now I get it, thanks! Looking forward to the mock up ;)

what about using wrapping paper like martha uses in that table setting (if i remember correctly - plus i’ve seen that paper design online), but just using a long strip of it off the roll? wouldn’t that be insanely cheaper than wallpaper?

the new martha crafts website actually has some cute rolls

http://www.marthastewartcrafts.com/index.php?v=msc_prod_wrap_wrappingpaper&sort=-price&g=1

there’s always papersource too, they have cute wrapper rolls & i think their flat paper is around 24×36 so you could cut strips of 12×36..

If you’re interested, i have a big long list of other online paper places that have sheets & rolls of great printed wrap. I’ve been thinking about doing this too!

thanks for the suggestion, kesm. unfortunately, i need 108″ long strips. i could go up to a foot shorter, but not much more. i’ve checked out flat paper at multiple local places and online, scoured everywhere for wrapping paper, found that bird paper in MS’s layout (it’s a cavallini print), and most aren’t the right color :(.

hi, my name is miss lime, and i’m a paper addict. i, too, have a long list of paper bookmarks. and yep, they didn’t yield it. and yep, it’s probably be cheaper. sigh.

yes, i’m insanely picky. boo to me.
