DIY Cake Topper

May 2nd, 2007 @ 3:32 pm by Mrs. Bee

Some of you guys hated the Patch Cake Toppers we featured recently, but hey, Martha thought they were cute and so did we! :) Creative bride Melissa Sue made her own for only $25 in craft supplies and alteration scraps from her actual wedding gown. She modeled the toppers after herself and her fiance - check out her diy instructions here. Nice work Melissa!

Melissa Sue, you have just given me such inspiration that I think I’m going to do this too! I’m in the same boat with searching high and low and scouring ebay for cake toppers and still finding nothing I liked. Let me know if you have extra materials that you don’t need and I’d be glad to buy them off you!

By the way, LOVE LOVE LOVE the Project Runway reference!!!

lol I didn’t like the Patch Cake Toppers either. Melissa Sue’s version is much cuter.

those turned out great for $25!

Deja vu on the Patch Cake Toppers (still not my favorite), but cuter especially with finishing touches in the back and on the base.

Is the groom bald with a goatee? Very good sense of humor/personalization! At this price, you could make a series of different heads and let the groom pick his best likeness.

i guess my comment never posted through on the other entry about these cute things..
i think they’re so cute~
but i do find it funny how so many ppl didn’t like them in the previous entry~

kp - what if they didn’t allow themselves to like them? There’s no sense in even giving something like that a second thought if you already know you can’t afford it…

That said, I showed them to FH and he says no thank you. I might still try to sneak them in somewhere else besides the cake!

kandaceandjason — good point. To me this cake topper makes much more sense as a homemade DIY by a crafty bride to reflect herself & fiance, rather than a $500+ purchase with a markup disproportionate to the materials and experience required to make it (turn-off). Plus, the how-to link to the creator’s site reveals that the bride used scraps from her own wedding dress — so sentimental and resourceful!

the thing that makes these cuter than the patch cake toppers is that these are personalized! these dont look so overdone too. that dress looks amazing! props to melissa.

It looks fantastic! So cute and funky. Just as good as Patch Cake Toppers. I love the flower decoration around the bride and groom with wee birdies. I agree it’s so much more sentimental because the bride made it. Kudos to her!
