About Beehive

Beehive

May 3rd, 2007 @ 4:20 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. Megan is looking for cute, classy, dressy, flats and/or flip flops to wear with an “ethereal” silk chiffon ivory gown for an island wedding on the grass. Everything she’s found is kind of cheap looking.
  2. Kelly has questions here for Mrs. Ant and anyone who got married at The Rockhouse in Jamaica. Her friend is considering the venue but couldn’t get much information.
  3. AS is looking for bridal hair/makeup suggestions in Westchester. It’d be great if they had experience with Asian brides.
  4. Kara is looking for MOB dress suggestions off the rack. Her mom doesn’t want to wear a typical boxy jacket/long skirt combo. Where did your mothers buy their dresses?
  5. girl is making these ornaments to give as favors. Since she’s inviting everyone with a guest and most of them are married, should she give each guest one, or each couple one? Is it a waste of time to be making all of these?
  6. girl’s father/daughter dance song is to Butterfly Kisses, but her dad is disabled and can’t stand that long. Does anyone know of any shorter versions or have any suggestions on how to shorten it?
  7. Ali wants to know if anyone has ever been though the wedding gown restoration process before? She has a gorgeous vintage William Cayhill gown that’s yellowed over time, but her family demands that she wear white. Is it worth it and which companies can she trust?
  8. cka102007 wants to know what you think about a bridal bouquet of white and cream roses against an ivory dress? Or should she go with cream and peach roses? Her bm’s are holding orange roses.

2 - Kelly, I think The Rockhouse was Mrs. Ant’s venue. I’m not sure. I think you should check back on her posts. She had so much info, and beautiful beautiful pictures.

Kara- I’ve heard Chadwick’s http://www.chadwicks.com has MOB dresses… however my mom didn’t really like them and still hasn’t gotten hers either… so I’ll be checking responses as well!

girl- you can give each couple one. my favors are albums that are acting as placecards and it’s one per couple. after all- what would a couple do with 2 ornaments that are the same right?

Kelly, your friend can also check the Destination Weddings board on theknot. It is a pretty friendly board and there are at least two people on it at this time that are prepping for Rockhouse weddings this year.

girl–I’m having my first dance tune shortened just because every first dance I’ve ever seen seems way too long; however, shortening tunes without making it obvious can take fairly mad skillz and expensive software. Ask your DJ “do you have ProTools?” If yes, then ask if he/she can take a chunk out of the middle. If no, see if there’s a good place to fade out. Or fade in! You don’t necessarily have to start at the absolute beginning.

girl - maybe you can have people join you on the dace floor after a certain amount of time, that way you and your dad can discreetly move to the side. You can probably work this out with your DJ, or arrange for family members, BP members to join you after 30 seconds or so.

Megan - they are kind of expensive, but check JCrew, they have some super cute wedges that look pretty etheral. ;)

Kara - have you tried the usual suspects like Nordstrom, Macy’s, etc? I’m in the same situation,a nd I think that’s where we’re goign to get my mom’s dress.

cka - it is TOTALLY fine to have white roses with an ivory dress. No one will even notice. I think it will look fab.

thank’s guys…the biggest issue with the dance thing is that we are having a band, but they are playing the song on a CD…I don’t think they can fade it…I may just try to contact a DJ to see if they have one already made :)

oh girl, make the band learn your tune. How big is this band? I just found a piano-guitar version online for four bucks.

girl — couples/families living in the same household should be able to share an ornament.

About the song, the DJ could pre-edit a version to skip the middle verse or extra repeats of the chorus. Also, you don’t have to start dancing on beat 1. The DJ can start the song, and you have some time to find your dad. Another idea is that by verse 2 or so, have someone else dear to you (brother, uncle, grandfather, new hubby) do the gentlemanly, “May I cut in” which would be very sweet and also give your dad a graceful chivalrous way to promptly hand you off to the next dance partner (or the first in a series — dance a verse or so with each male relative who has special meaning in your life, ending with your husband).

(actually, girl, Iris’s idea is way better than mine. I recant.)

Sarah, you are too sweet. Hey, you never know whose idea will work for whose wedding, so we all toss ‘em out there!

girl - I love them! I do not think they are a waste of anything. I would be super excited to receive that as a favor! I think one per couple is best! Congrats on an awesome idea!

Megan- Check out Jack Rogers sandals! I live in them all summer because they’re so easy to dress up or down. If I were having a beach wedding, I would definitely rock a gold or silver pair. (nordstrom.com or jildorshoes.com)

Megan: Check sandalworld.com. Lots of choices. I am getting married at the beach on grass & will choose one of the Mystique sandals. I saw them at Bloomingdales & they look even better than online.

I was wondering if anyone knew of good makeup/hair people in LA. I posted this question awhile ago but I only got 1 good Orange County makeup artist. I’d like them to be in LA so I won’t have to pay a travel fee!

I have a question! We are hoping to save some money on our honeymoon, and I was thinking of getting a frequent-flier miles credit card (and earn miles on daily purchases, etc). But looking into it, it seems like you have to spend a TON of money to even earn a cheap ticket! Does anyone have any experience with this, or have any advice for me?

girl - You can do one per family/couple. I’d have a few extras though just in case. Also, I’d suggest not putting your monogram on the inside. Instead I’d put a quote, verse or cute saying.

does anyone know if there is an online retailer with better prices for party supplies for the receptions (nicer plastic cups and plates specifically) than if i just go to a place like GFS or Sam’s

Can someone explain the whole rehearsal dinner thing? Does it usually take place at the ceremony site, with the officiant, etc.? Or do you just have it at a restaurant or something and run through the program? And in how much detail?

photo albums - i recently got married and i have over 700 4×6 proofs that i got from our photographer. does anyone know a good place to buy photo albums (either online, or somewhere in the OC) that will store this many photos. i’m open to buying a few albums, but i’m not really wanting to scrapbook these 700 pictures. most of the photo albums i’ve seen are either tacky, or really expensive.

Meg-
If you already have FF miles it will help. The minimum # of points that you need to accrue to earn a free domestic flight is generally 25,000 for all airlines. A lot of these credit cards give you anywhere from 5,000-20,000 points after your first purchase. I got a Continental Airlines cc last year, and received 10,000 miles free after my first purchase. Since I had already accumulated approx. 16,000 points previously with Continental, I hit the 25,000 mark and earned myself a free flight to AZ! Note: this is for domestic flights, international flights cost more and you are restricted to flights that qualify for FF mile redemption when you book. It’s a great deal but be aware of restrictions.

Kara-
My mother wanted something less matronly looking and we found this great brand “Scala” online and found the nearest store that carried their dresses. Go to http://www.scalausa.com and click on MOB to see their styles. There’s a page for locations in your area too on their site. Some stores that carry their dresses may let you buy off the rack. Ours gave us the option and we decided to order a new one since we had the time. The sizes are S,M, L so that makes it easier too! Good luck!

Meg, tickets bought with miles not only have many restrictions but also are sold out MANY months in advance, so unless your honeymoon is in like 8 months or after, and you already have enough miles to get the tickets, it’s probably not going to work out for you. You can check the airline’s website with whom you have miles already to see how many you need for your destination. It varies from one to another.
I don’t want to discourage you though, If your wedding is next year and you can pay all your vendors now with your miles card, then go for it, chances are you’ll be able to save that money.

cka: just my two cents, but my florist told me that white and ivory flowers alike don’t show up well in photos. While I think that both ivory and white are fine, I would be wary and make sure there are enough peach roses to add depth to your bouquet.

melodiousness, in koreatown a lot of girls use Hills Beauty or Hair Day. http://www.yelp.com/biz/7RSjRX10xxnLv3rjH2X4DQ I think Hills is on Western and Beverly? i opted to use the makeup lady who did my eyebrow tattoos named Myeonghee Lee at HairDo. she speaks only korean so im not sure if that’ll be difficult to you. i have to have my fiance around to translate for me since my korean is limited. im not sure how they are with hair though. you may want to do a trial run. i hope this helps!

Re: frequent flier miles - it *REALLY* depends on the airline. I have had some great luck with Delta because they are pretty flexible as to what flights you can book with FF miles. I booked one five days before a flight, on a Friday evening (busy time), and only spent the lowest number of miles required. There were a lot of options, especially if you can be a little flexible. The programs that allow you to use miles on partner airlines can also be great because you’re not limited to one airliner’s schedule.

Aliya,

Thanks for the tip, I’ll talk to my florist about adding more peach colored roses.
